The Eastland Cougars fell short in the Warkins Cardinal Classic on Monday, Dec. 29. Orion outscored Eastland 17-7 in the third quarter
and held on in the final frame, defeating the Cougars 67-55.
In a game that went back and forth especially in the first half each team enjoyed various leads.
Winning in part thanks to a balanced scoring effort, Orion was able to spread the basketball around. Four different Orion players reached double
figures in the scoring column.
Eastland held a slim 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter. Orion outscored the Cougars 19-15 in the second quarter, taking a 32-30 lead
into halftime.
Orion hit 21 shots from the field and a trio of three-point field goals. The Orion team made its way to the free throw line early and often, sinking
22-of-35 free throw attempts.
Orion excelled on the defensive end in the third quarter, limiting Eastland to just a few field goals. Eastland connected on eight three-point field
goals in the setback. The Cougars hit 17 shots from the floor and finished 13-for-16 from the free throw line.
Tony Dunlap led Eastland. Dunlap, one of the area's top boys' high school basketball players, scored a game-high 28 points.
Tyler Zumdahl narrowly missed reaching double figures for Eastland, finishing with nine points. Ben Delp scored six points and Brad Dunlap
added five for the Cougars.
Eastland Outlasts Peoria Heights
Tony Dunlap scored a game-high 25 points last Tuesday (Dec. 30) as Eastland defeated Peoria Heights 66-62 in the seventh-place game of
the Warkins Classic. After being edged in the opening quarter, Eastland battled its way back and made the most of a successful second quarter run.
Peoria Heights outscored Eastland 15-13 in the opening quarter. Eastland went out in front in the second quarter, outscoring Peoria Heights 20-13
en route to a 33-28 halftime lead.
The Cougars connected on six three-point field goals. Tyler Zumdahl was the leading long-range shooter for Eastland, hitting a trio of
three-pointers. Zumdahl finished with 16 points. Brad Dunlap was another player in double-figures scoring for the Cougars, collecting 13 points in the tournament tilt.
Eastland hit 19 shots from the floor and finished 22-for-33 from the free throw line. The Cougars earned the win, performing well on both ends of
the floor.
Eastland also owned a five-point advantage at the conclusion of the third quarter, leading 45-40.
Peoria Heights hit 26 field goals and was 7-of-13 from the foul line.
Orion defeated Morrison 55-46 in the Warkins Cardinal Classic championship game.
Jason Smith led Morrison, finishing with a game-high 23 points.
