In a game that was back and forth in the first half, The Cougars used a big third quarter to open up some breathing room to defeat Stockton 67-55 Friday evening in Lanark. Eastland held a 15-12 first quarter lead and extended the lead to four 28-24 at the half. The third quarter proved costly for the Blackhawks as they allowed the Cougars to extend their lead to a dozen 48-36 at the end of three. Stockton spent most of their time on the free throw line in the second half as they attempted twenty one shots from the charity stripe, converting on eighteen. Both teams talled nineteen points in the fourth quarter and the Cougars notched the victory. Eastland was led by Courtney Blair’s twenty five points with Taylor Ruter contributing twenty three. Eastland also prevailed in the frosh/soph game 53-31.

Eastland Ladies Top West Carroll

The Eastland Cougars led the West Carroll Thunder by ten at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, defeating West Carroll in a blow out 59-26. Eastland extended their lead to eighteen by the half and to thirty one points by the end of the third quarter.
Balanced scoring and good defense led Eastland to the victory, as the Cougars had ten different players put points on the scoreboard. They also held West Carroll’s leading scorer to single digit numbers.
The Cougars were led by Kerby Kniss who poured in thirteen points with Courtney Blair and Taylor Ruter adding ten points each. West Carroll was led by Becca Fritz who had eight points in a losing effort.
Thunder head coach Travis Findlay said “We had bad perimeter defense and they were exceptional beyond the arc. That makes for a bad combination. Our post did a good job stalling their posts. Eastland just wanted it a lot more than we did.”
Polo used a big second half to get by Milledgeville 48-45 on Friday night in Milledgeville. The Missiles led at the half by six points 22-16. But Polo utilized the second half scoring of Julie Haye and Kaitlyn Grobe to best Milledgeville. The two accounted for twenty one of Polo’s thirty two second half points to down the Missiles.
Haye led the Marcos with fifteen points, with Grobe chipping in with fourteen. Andrea Herin led Milledgeville with fifteen while teammate Keali Engelkens added ten.

Wolves Dominate Thunder

After a close first quarter Pearl City turned on the jets and pulled away from West Carroll to take the 44 -31 win. Leading 10-8 after one, the Wolves held the Thunder to just four second quarter points while tallying ten to take a 20-12 halftime lead.
They came out after the intermission and held West Carroll to seven third quarter points to hold a 34-19 margin heading into the final frame. West Carroll did manage to outscore the Wolves in the fourth but it was too little too late and Pearl City took the victory.
The Wolves were led by Rachel Koning’s eleven points. West Carroll was led by Becca Fritz who poured in fifteen in a losing effort.
Head coach Travis Findlay said, “We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight but took better shots. They nade a run in the third to really pull ahead. Our girls showed a lot of pride by just going all out to get back in this game. Becca Fritz was outstanding. She was the best player on the court tonight.

Eastland Tops Thunder In OT

In December, the Thunder handed Eastland a loss in the championship game of the West Carroll Holiday tourney. On Monday night in Mt. Carroll, the Cougars got their revenge, handing West Carroll a two point overtime loss 59-57.
The two teams battled neck and neck the whole evening with West Carroll holding a three point lead at the half 22-19. Eastland battled back to take a three point lead of their own going into quarter number four, 39-36. But, the Thunder made up those three points, outscoring the Cougars fifteen to twelve in the final frame to send the contest into the extra period.
Brad Dunlap knocked down a huge three point shot to give the Cougars a one point advantage and giving the Cougars the overtime win.
Tony Dunlap led Eastland with twenty-one points. Collin Macomber added twelve and Mack Byers added ten. West Carroll was led by Brady Edwards with nineteen with Nate Law adding thirteen.
Thunder head coach Josh Knuth said of the contest, “Our defense off the dribble was bad all night. We can’t put a team on the line twenty eight times. It was just bad team defense Offensively, when we execute we play well but we still make too many silly turnovers. We have to get better in those areas if we want to have success.”

Wolves Outlast Missiles

In a game that was close at the half, Pearl City put together an excellent second half to defeat the Milledgeville Missiles 55-41 in Pearl City. Only five points separated the two teams at the half, with Pearl City holding a 26-21 margin. The Wolves then proceeded to outscore Milledgeville 29-20 in the second half to pull off the win. The Wolves were led by Pierson Hull who put twenty points on the scoreboard with Travis Schiess adding twelve. Milledgeville was led by Kurt Landis who scored eleven, while teammate Carrigan Hunter contributed ten in a losing effort.

West Carroll Routs Galena

The Thunder were firing on all cylinders on Saturday evening, making quick work of the Galena Pirates to take the 78-56 win. West Carroll led by nine points after the first frame and continued to pour it on, going into the locker room at the half holding a commanding 35-21 lead.
They kept up their intensity in the third frame, outscoring Galena 27-8 to end the third holding a 62-29 lead. Head coach Josh Knuth commented, “We played a good team game and we had a nice mix of scoring. Five and almost six players scored in double figures. However, we still didn’t play the kind of defense we need to so we have to continue to improve in that area.” Tyler Brashaw and Nate Law paced the Thunder, each scoring sixteen points, with John Getz adding twelve and Dillon Prowant scoring eleven and Brady Edawards adding ten points. Justin Hughes led the Pirates with twenty one points in a losing effort.

Scales Mound Edges Pearl City

The Hornets used a balanced scoring attack to down the Wolves on Saturday night 53-46. Scales Mound held a three point first quarter advantage and extended their lead to five points 28-23 by the half. The third was also big for Scales Mound as they outscored Pearl City 13-7 in the frame to take a 35-26 lead. They outscored the Wolves 17-11 in the final frame to take the seven point win.
The Hornets were led by Derian Phillips who scored twenty one points, with teammate Garrtett Homb adding eighteen. Pearl City was led by Pierson Hull’s fifteen with Jared Slick adding twelve points.

Milledgeville used a consistent scoring attack to down the Orangeville Broncos 45-43. Although the Broncos held a lead after the first quarter and at the half, the Missiles used the second half to take the advantage, outscoring Orangeville twenty six to twenty in the final two quarters.
Milledgeville was led in scoring by Keegan Neubauer’s thirteen points with teammates Kurt Landis and Carrigan Hunter chipping in with twelve points apiece.

Mustangs Roll Over Clippers

Morrison held a commanding eighteen point lead at the end of one period and extended their lead to twenty eight by the half to take the easy 75-47 win over Amboy on Thursday night. The Mustangs outscored Amboy in every period but the fourth as they cruised to the victory.
Morrison was led by Travis McBride’s seventeen points with Kyle Janssen contributing twelve and teammate Patrick Wagenect adding ten. The win improves the Mustangs record to 3-1 in the conference and 10-8 overall.
The West Carroll Thunder JV wrestling team will compete in the Panther JV Wrestling Tournament at the old high school in Erie Friday, January 15th, starting at 4:30. Other schools competing Erie/Prophetstown, Dixon, Freeport, Fulton, Johnsburg, Kewanee, Mercer County, Morrison, Oregon, Orion, Ottawa Township, Polo, Princeton, Riverdale, Rock Island Alleman, Sherrard, Sterling High School and Sterling Newman. Ticket prices are $4.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and a family pass for $12.00. A concession stand will be available.
The West Carroll Thunder varsity wrestlers will compete in the 36th Bob Lueder’s Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday, January 23rd, starting at 9:00 a.m. The tournament will be held at the Yourd Gymnasium in Clinton, Iowa.
