Orion Rolls Over Mustangs

The Orion Chargers were more than up to the task at hand, easily dispatching the Morrison Mustangs 72-30 in the opening round of the Warkins Cardinal Classic in Erie on Monday. The Chargers jumped out to the early lead, topping Morrison by nine points at the end of the first quarter. A huge second quarter by Orion found them leading by thirty one points at the halftime intermission. The rout was on as the Chargers cruised in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs twenty six to fifteen. Morrison’s Nick Volckmann led the Mustangs, dropping in nine points, while teammate Luke Brands added six.

Morrison Defeats Golden Eagles

The Mustangs used big second and fourth quarter scoring runs to defeat Mercer County 51-39 Monday at the Warkins Holiday tourney in Erie. Starting out down eighteen to six after one quarter, the Mustangs outscored the Golden Eagles nineteen to seven in the second to knot the score at twenty five at the half. They held a slim one point lead after three but blew the contest open in the final period, outscoring Mercer County sixteen to five to end the game. Mercer County’s Spencer Islamoski led the Golden Eagles with nine points. Morrison’s Bill Bos led all scorers with thirty one points and Will Bird added ten points.

Peoria Heights Slips By Mustangs

The Patriots used a big first quarter to take the lead and held on to take the 61-51 victory over the Mustangs Tuesday. Peoria Heights jumped out to a twenty two to ten first quarter lead and had just enough to hold Morrison at bay. The Patriots used timely outside shooting to keep their lead, draining eight three points. The Patriots Jimmy Smith led Peoria Heights with nineteen points while teammate Zach Jacobs added fourteen. Morrison was led in scoring by Bill Bos, who dropped in twenty one with teammate Will Bird adding eleven

Cougars Top Cardinals In Double OT

It was a tale of two halves for the Eastland Cougars on Monday in Erie. The Cougars trailed big at the half but came out in the second half to dominate Erie and send the game to overtime. It went to a second extra period before senior guard Brad Dunlap hit a three at the buzzer to propel Eastland to the thrilling 53-51 win. Nothing went right for Eastland in the first half as they trailed 22-9 after one quarter and 29-13 at the half. In the third quarter the scoring touch again came alive for the Cougars and their defense stifled Erie. The Cardinals were outscored twenty six to ten in the second half as the Cougars knotted the score at thirty nine to send the game to extra periods. Both squads put six on the board in the first overtime and Dunlap’s three as time expired in the second overtime proved to be the game winner. Eann Cox led the Cardinals with fifteen points and teammate Jordan Schaller added fourteen. Eastland’s Collin Macomber led all scorers with twenty one points and Brad Dunlap added nine.

Eastland Edges Wethersfield

The Cougars used a big third quarter advantage to take control over the Flying Geese and held on to take the 69-61 victory over Wethersfield. Eastland led by six after the first but trailed by four to start the second half. A seventeen to six third quarter advantage put Eastland back on top by seven points to begin the final quarter of play. The Cougars had eight different players contribute points with Collin Macomber again leading the way for Eastland with nineteen points and Brad Dunlap adding fourteen. Reid Lessman added a dozen for Eastland. Wethersfield was led in scoring by Devin DeClercq, who dropped in seventeen points with Adam Blair adding fourteen.

Cougars Slip Past Annawan

Eastland used a big second quarter run to take control of the game and went on to defeat Annawan 55-46 Tuesday at the Warkins Classic in Erie. The Cougars held a slim two point lead after one but outscored the Braves thirteen to three in the second quarter to take a twenty eight to sixteen lead at the half. Annawan battled back to cut the lead to seven after three but Eastland held on in the fourth to take the nine point victory. Reid Lessman led Eastland on the scoreboard, dropping in fourteen points with teammates Austin Hansen adding a dozen and Tyler Giedd contributing ten points. Phillip Pryzbyla who scored fourteen points with Annawan’s Jake DeJaeger adding a dozen points led the Braves.

Morrison Falls To Knoxville In Overtime

The Knoxville Blue Bullets jumped out to a big first quarter lead and then had to battle to hold off the Mustangs in overtime 64-57 Wednesday at the Warkins Classic in Erie. Knoxville led twenty four to eight after one and extended their lead to thirty six to twenty three at the half. Morrison was able to cut that lead to eight going into the final quarter. The Mustangs then outscored the Blue Bullets thirteen to five in the final quarter to send the game to an extra frame. Knoxville outscored the Mustangs thirteen to six to make the final margin of victory. The Blue Bullets were led in scoring by Dillon Lehr, who scored a game high twenty three points Dylon Smith led Morrison in scoring, dumping in sixteen points with teammate Bill Box adding twelve.

Cougars Dump Kewanee On Buzzer Beater

For the second time at the Cardinal Classic the Eastland Cougars won in dramatic fashion. After beating Erie on a last second three pointer by Brad Dunlap, Collin Macomber made one under the hoop as time expired on Wednesday to beat the Kewanee Boilermakers 40-39. The Boilermakers led by five points after one quarter and Eastland cut that lead to four points at the halftime intermission. The Cougars outscored Kewanee ten to nine in the third quarter to go into the final period trailing by a mere three points 32-29. The fourth quarter was back and forth as the Cougars took the lead on a pair of free throws by Ty Hartman with time winding down. A three pointer by Kewanee’s Jordan Hart put the Boilermakers up by a point, a missed shot by Eastland and a traveling call on Kewanee gave the ball back to the Cougars. A jump ball call gave the ball to Eastland under their own basket and after several timeouts the ball was inbounded to Collin who dumped in the game winner as time expired. Eastland was led in scoring by Collin Macomber’s eleven points with teammate Reid Lessman adding seven. Kewanee was led by Michael Sadowski who dropped in eight points. The Cougars move on to play Orion who defeated Peoria Heights for the championship on Thursday evening.

Morrison Takes 11th Place at Warkins

The Morrison Mustangs took an early lead and held on to defeat the Annawan Braves 48-40 in the eleventh place game of the Warkins tourney on Thursday in Erie. Morrison jumped out to a fourteen to twelve first quarter lead and extended that lead to five at the half. The lead grew to an eight point advantage after three quarters and both teams played even basketball in the final quarter. The Mustangs Bill Bos led Morrison with fifteen points while teammates Dylon Smith and Will Bird contributed thirteen and twelve respectively. Jake DeJaeger led Annawan with eighteen in a losing effort.

Cougars Take Second At Erie Tournament

Despite taking an early first quarter lead against Orion at the Warkins Classic, free throws proved to be the difference at the Cougars fell 47-43. The Cougars led thirteen to twelve after one but trailed by a slim four points at the half. The lead by the Chargers was held at eight points going into the final quarter. Orion’s lead was never more than seven points at any time in the contest. The Chargers converted on ten of twelve charity tosses while Eastland managed to shoot only three for eight from the line. The Cougars Collin Macomber led Eastland in the scoring column with ten points. Reid Lessman added nine points. For the Chargers, Kaleb Nesbitt took scoring honors with fifteen points while teammate Tanner Williams added thirteen.

KC Free Throw Contest Jan. 15 at Eastland Middle School

Local competition in the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is set for Saturday, January 15 at the Eastland Middle School in Shannon. Registration will be held from 9-9:30 a.m. and all boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent. The KC Free Throw Championship is an annual event with winners advancing through the council, district and regional levels. This event is being sponsored by the Shannon Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus is an international Catholic family fraternal organization with more than 12,500 local councils.
