Hag is a word not only associated with your familiar Halloween broom rider or the neighborhood crone, but with peat bogs as well. Hags is an
old-timey word meaning the pit dug in peat beds, the hole left from the extraction of the material.
With the blink of an eye everything can change. That surely seems to be the case with the crops this year. One day you look out the window and
swear it would be November before they start to turn colors, and the next day they have!
October 7 marks the day in which you need to be registered to vote in the November elections. November 4 is a day on which we must be both
serious and educated. As we saw last year, Election Day results can dramatically threaten or change the way we farm, our profit levels, and what agencies we
work with. This year all of our current State Legislators are running opposed here in Carroll County.
You can register to vote at the County Clerk's Office. We have a document on our website (www.carrollcfb.org) that explains what you will need
to register and requirements if you have moved or changed your name. You can even register through the mail. So take a few minutes out of your day and
be sure to get registered!
If you have not sent in your 2008-2009 Farm Bureau dues yet, be sure to get them in before October 1 when the $10 reinstatement fee kicks in.
Why are you paying the dues you might ask? Being a Farm Bureau provides you will all types of membership benefits. As a member it is easy to save more
than the dues amount through benefits. We have our own local discount program which involves businesses throughout the county, along with the state benefits.
GM offers a private offer to Farm Bureau members which can save you up to $750 off of a new vehicle. As a member you also save on hotels, car
rentals, prescriptions, Grainger, and at Sherwin Williams.
The bus is filling up fast for the Girls' Day Out on Friday, November 21. We are headed into Woodfield Mall and IKEA in Schaumberg for a day
full of shopping, eating, and browsing. Contact our office to get signed up. Cost is $22 for members and $25 for non-members.
This past week, we hosted a 3rd Grade "There's a Pig in my Pizza" program at the fairgrounds. We brought out all of the third graders and moved
them through various stations where they learned about all of the commodities that are a part of a pizza. The students learned about corn, soybeans,
wheat, vegetables, pork, beef, and dairy.
Melinda, our Ag Literacy Coordinator, pulled the whole event together. It was an idea that arose last year, however, time kept us from pulling it off.
I need to send out a big thank you to those who presented: Arlene Bickelhaupt, Doug Block, the Eastland FFA, Bobbi Janssen, and Brad Smith. Without
their help and presentations we would not have been able to have such a successful event. We are already looking forward to making next year's event bigger
and better.
