After losing a tough three game match on Tuesday night to Stockton, the Eastland squad bounced back with a two game win over the West Carroll Lady Thunder Wednesday evening in Savanna. The Lady Cougars took control early on in game one and cruised to the twenty five to nine win.

Game two saw Eastland jump out to an early lead and the Lady Thunder clawed their way back to make it a close match before finally falling to the Lady Cougars twenty five to eighteen. “I don’t know what team of mine showed up tonight,” said West Carroll head coach Paula Jones, “but I haven’t seen so many missed serves and unforced errors all season combined. The team I know showed up the second game when Eastland had twenty four points, when it was too late. That is when we scored five points in a row and had intensity.”

West Carroll won both the freshman and sophomore matches. Eastland’s next match is Tuesday, October 11th when they host the Pearl City Lady Wolves. The next match for West Carroll is also Tuesday, when they host the Le-Win Lady Panthers.

Lady Thunder Over Pearl City

The West Carroll Lady Thunder hosted the Pearl City lady Wolves on Monday, October 3rd and took the three game match by scores of 22-25,25-20 and 25-18. Ashlyn Miller led West Carroll with fifteen kills and seventeen digs while teammate Kim Durward added a dozen kills and a pair of blocks. Lady Thunder head coach Paula Jones commented, “We had a lot of mental mistakes but we fought through it. I was happy we came back after losing the first game.” West Carroll’s freshman team took their match by scores of 25-22 and 25-14 while the sophomores lost to the Lady Wolves 25-23 and 25-19.

Lady Bulldogs Top Milledgeville

The Lady Missiles hosted Freeport Aquin on Tuesday, October 4th and fell to the Lady Bulldogs in three by scores of 17-25, 25-23 and 25-21. Brandie Gelwicks has six ace serves and twenty three digs for Milledgeville while Jolee Parks added eighteen digs. Becka Whitmarsh also had eighteen kills for the Lady Missiles and teammate Haley McAuliffe added eight assists.

Stockton Takes Two From Lady Cougars

The Stockton Lady Blackhawks traveled to Lanark on Tuesday to face Eastland. The Lady Cougars took control of game one and finished Stockton off by a score of 25-17. Game two saw Stockton take control and go on to the 25-17 victory. In game three the two teams battled back and forth before unforced errors again hurt the Lady Cougars and allowed Stockton to take control late in the game and go on to the 25-22 win. Alex Todd had six service points and three aces for Eastland while teammate Taylor Heeren added a dozen kills and ten digs. Lady Cougar Haley Miller chipped in with twenty seven assists.

Missiles Take Two From AFC

The AFC Lady Raiders traveled to Milledgeville on Thursday, October 6th and the host Milledgeville Lady Missiles sent them home after taking the two game victory. Milledgeville won by scores of 25-15 and 25-23. Lady Missile Becka Whitmarsh recorded fifteen kills for Milledgeville and teammate Haley McAuliffe notched fifteen assists in the Milledgeville win. Milledgeville also won the fresh/soph match by the scores of 25-21 and 25-16. The Lady Missiles will travel to Lanark on Wednesday, October 12th to face the Lady Cougars at EHS.

Forreston ran wild on the football field on Saturday afternoon in Forreston as the Cardinals crushed the West Carroll Thunder 60-12. It didn’t seem to matter much to Forreston who carried the ball as ten different players rushed the football, amassing over five hundred yards of running offense.

Back Brian Kraft got the scoring started for Forreston with an eleven yard TD run on the Cardinals opening drive. Forreston’s Felix Romero, Adam Akins and Chris Sanders would also find the end zone in the opening quarter to put the Cardinals in control with a thirty nine to nothing first quarter lead. Forreston QB Brett Carlson found Kenyon Janicke in the second quarter for a nine yard scoring strike. The Cardinals would add runs of three and thirty three yards from Ross Williams and Tylor Henneman to complete the Forreston scoring.

The Thunder were able to crack the scoreboard in quarter three as Joe Sullivan took the ball in from one yard out. Sullivan would add another score in the fourth quarter on a twenty eight yard run. Akins led the Forreston ground game, rushing the ball five times for one hundred fifteen yards with teammate Williams adding eighty two yards on eleven carries. Sullivan led the Thunder with sixty two yards on eight carries. West Carroll hosts the Galena Pirates on Friday night in Savanna while the Forreston Cardinals travel to Pecatonica to take on the Indians.

WCMS Volleyball Concludes Season

The West Carroll 7th grade volleyball teams completed their 2011-1012 season last week with the Black team playing Lena on October 4th and the Green team traveling to River Ridge on October 6th. Lena bested the young Thunder in the match on Tuesday with scores of 8-21, 21-21 and 13-15. “The Thunder put up a good fight, but just couldn’t get it going,” said Coach Kari Baisden. “We didn’t have the strong serves that we usually have. In fact, only four players served more than twice in a row for all three matches. We can’t win if we can’t get our serves in. Lena is also a very good team with sound fundamentals and more height. We had a hard time defending their hits.” Leading the serving for the Green team were Hayley Guilinger, Emily Suiter, Olivia Brinkmeier and Taylor Sipe. On Thursday, the Black team traveled to River Ridge to play their seventh grade team. The Thunder won the match 21-17 and 21-8. In an additional third game, the River Ridge team edged out the Thunder by a score of 20-22. In this game, the serving was strong as usual. Leading point getters were Josi Anderson, Olivia Burton, Allisa Miner, Natalie O’Connor, Keara Hayden and Makenzie Klein. “These girls have a good start toward being really good volleyball players in high school if they keep practicing, attending summer camps, and getting stronger. I really enjoyed working with them and look forward to watching them improve next year and beyond.” Commented Coach Baisden.
