What was that light ahead this time of night, 10:00? No train was due. At nine all had been well. The light seemed to grow larger. He began to trot towards it, stepping rhythmically, concentrating on the light rather than his footfall. As Manning approached the next to last span of the bridge, he stopped.

"Oh, hell," he spat. The light was a flame. With the expletive, fingers of fire leapt to a wooden side brace to writhe like a fiery snake to the roof. There'd be no chance to squelch the fire alone and overhead. He turned to run back the way he'd come. He heard a pop, a thud as a plank already had fallen to the tracks. The flames were eating towards him.

Manning commenced running again, winded when reaching the north bank of the river where he could see the covered bridge suddenly burst into blazing spectacle. In just a half hour the impressive bridge was a total loss.

Carroll County Farm Bureau

Last week the 4C's, our Primetimers group, took a tour of Roger's Creek Grist Mill in Milledgeville. It was quite an interesting evening. I myself have never been interested in history. My idea of history is yesterday. I was very much a math, accounting, and chemistry student. However, I found the tour very interesting. Bonnie and Roger Bork did a great job talking about how they got into Grist Mills and why they built a mill on their property.

I had taken my son with me for the evening. He wasn't thrilled about accompanying mom on a work program. However, once we got there and he watched the water wheel work its magic, he was glad he came. He also thoroughly enjoyed the part where Roger ground corn into corn meal. They will be holding an Open House on October 18 and November 15 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. They also sell their products which include whole wheat flour, corn meal, pancake mixes, muffin mixes, and more at their location and a few stores throughout the county. You can call them at 815-225-7236 or visit their website at www.rogerscreekgristmill.com.

Starting on Tuesday, October 14, WCCI will be running a different legislator or opponent's responses each day between 8 and 8:30 a.m. to questions we proposed in order to help our members in making a decision this November when they are at the polls. So be sure to tune in!
