Mustangs Lose Homecoming Game
By Bill Popkin | For The Prairie Advocate News
A beautiful autumn parade through the downtown, the king and queen crowned, and preparations completed for an exciting dance Saturday evening. All that was needed was a football victory Friday night to make the Morrison Homecoming weekend a wonderful success!
The opponents, the Rockridge Rockets, were recently ranked 4th in Illinois class 2A. The Rockets (7-0) scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff and never looked back en route to a lopsided 41-7 victory.
Junior Luke Johnson of Rockridge, took the kickoff to begin the game back 82 yards to give the Rockets a quick lead. On their very next possession, the visitors completed a ten-play 63-yard drive that ended over the goal line. Morrison (2-5) trailed 12-0 early on. Rockridge tacked on 2 more touchdowns via the pass in the second period to go into the intermission break ahead 28-0.
Morrison finally got on the scoreboard in the final quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run by Andy Bird. But it was too little too late. Rockridge won rather easily 41-7.
Morrison had 10 first downs and 140 yards of total offense, while the Rockets countered with 18 and 358 respectively. With their 5 losses, Morrison will be ineligible for post-season play for the first time in 10 seasons.
The Mustangs will host Erie- Prophetstown on October 18 at E.M. Cole Field. Game time is approximately 7:30 P.M. Support your local athletes on the gridiron!
