I have already tried three of the recipes and we loved them all!"

Don't Throw Out Those Old Holiday Lights, Recycle Them!
Beginning on America Recycles Day, November 15, 2009, and continuing through January 15, 2010, Jo Daviess and Carroll County
residents can recycle their incandescent and LED holiday light strands at University of Illinois Extension offices in the Jo-Carroll Unit.
When replacing your Halloween, Christmas, or other holiday light strings because they don't work or because of decorating changes, instead
of throwing out the old ones, recycle them. In order to recycle your lights, remove all packaging, loose bulbs, and any packing material or apparatus used
to wind up or store the lights.
To participate in this recycling program, drop your unwanted holiday light strands off at either Jo-Carroll Extension Unit office during the
specified time period. Extension offices are located at: 807D S. Clay Street, Mt. Carroll or 204 S. Vine, Elizabeth. There is no charge to participate in this
program. Program sponsorship is provided by the Green Fair Alliance, Jo-Carroll Solid Waste Agency and University of Illinois Extension.
When purchasing new decorative light strings, the website www.energystar.gov recommends buying Energy Star LED lights. LED lights,
which consume 75% less energy than conventional incandescent lights, can last up to 10 times longer than traditional incandescent strands. They are also cool
to the touch. In addition, because they do not have filaments or glass, they are more durable than other light strings.
For your questions on holiday light or other recycling programs, contact Maggie Friedenbach, Recycling & Conservation Programs Coordinator,
at 815-244-9444.
Clarification . . .
In the October 28, 2009 Prairie Advocate News, an item in the article entitled "Artisans Group Making Progress With Holiday Shop Hop"
needs clarification.
Speaking of the Carroll County Artisans Group (CCAG), formed this past summer, the article stated that "The group has hit the ground running
with several projects already underway. Thanks to a USDA Rural Development Cooperative grant provided through the Illinois Institute for Rural
Affairs (IIRA), the group already has a website and brochure developed."
According to Heather A. Houzenga, president of the Artists' Cooperative of Savanna, nfp, "The (Carroll County) Artisan group did not receive a
grant from the state for anything that has been accomplished so far. The Artists' Cooperative of Savanna, NFP received a grant and then decided it would be
a good idea to help the group get started. The ACS paid for design and printing of brochures, and the website through this grant."
Thank you, Heather, for this information.

Cecil Johnson Photo Exhibit at ACS Open House
The Artists Cooperative of Savanna will present an open house on November 14 at their 321 Art Gallery for a photography exhibit by
Cecil Johnson. The public is invited to a free catered reception from 6 to 8 PM.
Johnson grew up in Savanna, and returned to live there four years ago, after military duty and his retirement from a working career in Rockford, IL.
His interest in photography began during a tour of duty in Morocco in 1961. He studied photography and received on the job training from instructors
and experienced photographers during part time work in portrait studio, church, and wedding photography. His work in Rockford as an industrial
buyer provided additional knowledge of photography, graphics, computer, and related processing equipment and applications; he also attended courses in
advanced Photoshop applications and now practices advanced computer graphics. Though he has used large format and single lens reflex film cameras,
along with a variety of digital cameras, digital single lens reflex, (through the lens viewing) cameras are now his preferred equipment.
Johnson has always been an avid wildlife photographer and has conducted several photography workshops at the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning
Center at Springlake (south of Savanna) and recently gave one for the Palisades Art League at the 321 Art Gallery. His workshops provide a training
presentation which includes his original work and experience in working knowledge of digital photography and equipment primarily for the beginner and
intermediate shooter, including emphasis on the person's observation skills.
He has also overseen outdoor portrait shoots for the Cancer Society Relay for Life benefits in Fulton and staged "play days" for photographers at
the Muddy River Camera Club in Clinton.
Johnson wants to share his experience and knowledge of digital photography to the extent that everyone can view the many aspects and beauty of
our surroundings so they will not be overlooked. "When you live in the midst of such a magnificent natural environment that is so filled with an abundance
of wildlife, some may tend to take it for granted. It is my hope that I can stimulate observation and appreciation for the varieties of the plants and
creatures around us to the end that we will protect them".
Johnson's exhibit, along with a wide range of unique and hand-crafted items from wood-workings, greeting cards, jewelry, stained glass,
pottery, knitted and crocheted work, sculptured pieces, beadwork, quiltings, blown glass and Savanna souvenirs, can be viewed during regular 321 Gallery
hours Wednesday through Saturday for 10 AM to 4 PM and on Sunday from 1 to 4 PM. The 321 Gallery is closed on holidays

Earth Angels Wanted
To help bring a little Joy into the life of a child in need this Holiday, earn your "Earth Angel" wings by sponsoring a child for Christmas.
With your contribution of a toy or donation, he or she will know Santa didn't forget them after all.
"Our goal is to reach out to families currently residing in Ogle County (but no family in need will be rejected) that has 'fallen through the
system' somehow, and is unable to receive any kind of assistance," said "Granny," (aka Linda Straith), "but who really could use an Earth Angel assigned to
them to make this a special Christmas after all.
"If you know of a family who 'really' needs an Earth Angel, even if it's your own family, please come forward and let us know, all the information
is kept Confidential," Granny added. "What is most important is gender and ages so gifts can be purchased and distributed accordingly."
Granny says you can still earn your wings by volunteering to help wrap, pick up or deliver when the time comes, even if it is for only an hour or
two. "Remember, the names being gathered need your help, generosity & opened hearts for toys & donations to make this a success. Together, we can make
Ogle County the largest group of bell ringing "Angels" again this year."
Look for updates in The Prairie Advocate, or go to their website address: http://earthangelsoglecounty.spaces.live.com. Questions? Want to
volunteer? Need a pick up? Call 815-291-7757 and ask for "Granny."
