After splitting two regular season meetings, the Eastland Lady Cougars made fairly easy work of Le-Win in the Tuesday night (11/3) semifinals of the Eastland Sectional. The Lady Cougars won in two games, 25-16 and 25-19 to improve their season record to 36-2 while dropping Le-Win to a final record of 30-8.

Eastland built early leads in both games and didn't allow the Lady Panthers to make any big runs to come back on them. The Eastland squad took on the Orion Lady Chargers on Thursday night to decide the Sectional champion. Orion eliminated the Orangeville Lady Broncos in Tuesday's night's first semifinal match up, 25-20 and 25-22.

The Eastland Lady Cougars proved Tuesday night why they are the defending state champions, handily dispatching an Orion Lady Charger team that looked overmatched from the start. Eastland rolled to the easy two game victory, 25-8 and 25-14 to advance to Saturday nights South Beloit Super Sectional, where they face Newark at 7 pm.

Looking every bit the champs in game 1, the Lady Cougars jumped out to a decisive 11-1 lead before rolling to the easy win. The Lady Chargers made things a little tighter in game two before Eastland went on a 13-3 run to take a 20-10 lead. Katelyn Hasken led Eastland with five aces and five kills, while Megan Bunyer chipped in with eight kills.

The young West Carroll Thunder volleyball team made a great late-season run, advancing to the finals of the Oregon Sectional. But state-qualifying Harvard was too much for the Thunder ladies, as they lost in 2 games. (PA photo/Tom Kocal)

West Carroll kept rolling on Tuesday night at the Oregon Sectional, taking a three game win from Mendota, 25-22, 14-25 and 25-23 to advance to Thursday nights championship against Harvard. Rebecca Fritz led the Lady Thunder with twenty-one kills, as the West Carroll team was more than up to the task of keeping their run going.

Both the first and third games were close and the only momentum from Mendota came in game two as the Spikers took a big lead early and won game two with ease. But, the lady Thunder came out strong in game three and proved they have no quit in them. They faced a very good Harvard team on Thursday for the opportunity to advance to Super sectional play on Saturday night in Spring Valley, but lost in 2 games.

Mustangs Roll Over Wildcats

The undefeated and #1 ranked Morrison Mustangs took little time establishing who would be the dominant team on Saturday afternoon in Lanark. After taking the opening kickoff, EPC QB Drake Walker threw a first pass interception that was picked off by Mustang Kyle Janssen. On fourth and eleven, Morrison QB Andrew Cook found Will Bird in the front corner of the end zone for a 29 yard score.

Morrison was already up 14-0 when Janssen broke off a 56 yard run for another score. The Mustangs kept up the pressure in the third quarter, with another Janssen TD run, this one from 57 yards out to make the score 28-0.

The Mustang defense shut down EPC's offense, holding rusher Alex Maurer to just 4 yards on 16 carries. Morrison would tack on two more scores to make the final 42-0 and advance to the next round. Janssen led the Morrison ground game, carrying the ball 3 times for 115 yards and 2 scores, while Josh Vos carried 14 times for 46 yards and 1 TD.
