"Cranberry, or bearberry (because bears use much to feed upon them), is a small, trayling plant that grows in salt marshes that are overgrown with moss. The tender branches, which are reddish, run out in great length lying flat on the ground ... The leaves are like box, but greener thick and glistening. The blossoms are very like the flowers of our English night-shade; after which succeed the berries, hanging by long, small foot-stalks no bigger than a hair. At first they are of a pale-yellow colour; afterward red and as big as a cherry ... Of a sower, astringent taste. They are excellent against the scurvy. They are good to allay the fervour of hot diseases. The Indians and English use them much, boyling them with sugar for sauce to eat with their meat; and it is a delicate sauce especially with roasted mutton."

John Josselyn -"New England's Rarities Discovered," 1672.

Carroll County Farm Bureau

The Quality of Life Action Team is sponsoring a stroke screenings. The complete screening package now includes a new Heart Rhythm screening, checking for irregular heartbeat, which is a major risk factor for stroke.

Carroll County Farm Bureau is pleased to host this event presented by Life Line Screening on Wednesday, December 3rd. The site is located at 811 S Clay St. appointments will begin at 9 a.m.

A stroke, also known as a "brain attack," is ranked as the third leading killer in the world.

Screenings are fast, painless and affordable. They help identify potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease.

Register for a Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package for $139. All four screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441. Pre-registration is required.

The action team has also been working with the Carroll County Health Department and the three school districts in the county with our Healthy Lifestyle Challenge. One of the huge benefits of the challenge is getting cholesterol readings in about 10 minutes. This service is actually available through the Carroll County Health Department to all individuals in Carroll County. All you need to do is contact the Health Department at 815-244-8855 for more information.

Get to Know Your Policy: On the Delegate Floor

This is an important time of year for farmers. After all, in December, your needs and concerns are addressed on the delegate floor of the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting. Then in January, your grassroots wants are thrust on to the national level at the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting. That's why this is an excellent time for you to get to know how policies are formed by examining policy #2, Activation and Status Resolutions:

"Policies of the Illinois Agricultural Association are subject to review at any official meeting of the voting delegates. Resolutions adopted at this annual meeting state the current position of the Illinois Agricultural Association. The voting delegates authorize the renumbering, placing, and arranging of the resolutions adopted at this annual meeting with the appropriate subject matter for publication in the current resolutions booklet."

Get ready to start the new year off on a good foot and learn more about the policy development that directly impacts you. Call Carroll County Farm Bureau at 815-244-3001 and ask how you can get involved in policy development.
