We already had to place a second order for the holiday scent candles. They were flying off of the shelves. So don’t hesitate to stop out sooner than later if there are certain candles you are hoping to get. Once the holiday scents are gone, they will be gone as we won’t be able to get another shipment in prior to Christmas.
We will again be doing a Farm Bureau night at the IceHogs in Rockford at the BMO Harris Bank Center or as I will always refer to it as, the Metro Centre. This year it will be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2013. The game will start at 7:05 p.m. and Rockford IceHogs will be taking on the Houston Aeros. This year we are not going on fleece blanket night but it is bobble-head give-a-way night! Cost is $12 per ticket and you can reserve your tickets by giving our office a call. The seats are upperlevel sideline seats.
Another year of the IAA Annual Meeting is now officially in the books. This year it seemed to me to be busier than ever. I had the opportunity to co-present a mini-session on Grain Handling Safety with Jeff Adkisson from the Illinois Grain and Feed Association and Peggy Romba with Illinois Farm Bureau. I also watched our only Young Leader in the State Discussion Meet, Jon Lower, work hard to try to place in the top four. This year there was some very stiff competition in the Young Leader Discussion Meet. Now I know I am not that old but I guess because I seem to have been around for many years I can say this, there is some great young talent coming up as Farm Bureau leaders. It is exciting to see our organization will have strong leadership in the years to come.
The IAA Foundation has announced this year’s scholarship opportunities. There are over 50 scholarships that will be given out. Some of them have specific requirements, but there are a number of them that are more general. First off applicants must meet the following requirements: must be a high school graduate or graduating in 2013; must be an Illinois Farm Bureau member, spouse of a member, or member’s child (except for Prairie Farms and Illinois Soybean Association scholarships); must be accepted for enrollment or be enrolled at an accredited college, university community college or trade school majoring in agriculture, agri-business or a closely related field (except for Ratermann and Prairie Farms scholarships); must exhibit potential for successful completion of course of study; must be a resident of Illinois (except for Prairie Farms scholarship); and may not be a spouse, child, brother, sister, grandchild, son-in-law or daughter-in-law of an IAA Foundation trustee or employee. The scholarship applications are available by going to www.iaafoundation.org. The applications are due February 1, 2012.
The Illinois Soybean Association offers up to ten $4000 scholarships to students (60+hours) beginning their junior level or transfer students enrolled at one of the approved universities (ISU, SIU, WIU, UIUC) as a junior whose major is crop production or a crop science discipline. This scholarship does not require an Illinois Farm Bureau membership but does require a separate application from the IAA Foundation. This form can also be found at www.iaafoundation.org. The Carroll County Farm Bureau Foundation scholarship applications will not be out until January.
