Pearl City Tournament

Cougars Beat Host Pearl City

PEARL CITY The Eastland girls' basketball team was able to persevere and win without starting center Courtney Blair Saturday in the Pearl City Tournament. The Lady Cougars held on to beat host Pearl City in the seventh-place game of the competitive Pearl City Tournament.

Blair has been pushed to the sidelines on an indefinite basis after partially tearing the ACL in her right knee cap in a game earlier in the week (Thursday) versus Warren.

August Cassens paced Eastland in the win over host Pearl City, scoring a game-high 26 points. Cassens was accurate from the floor, hitting 12-of-19 field goal attempts.

The Cougars won, despite committing 11 first quarter turnovers. The Lady Wolves also owned a 21-9 lead at the conclusion of the opening quarter.

After heading into halftime still behind, Eastland trailed 36-27 in the third quarter when it proceeded to go on a 16-2 run.

Warren 78, West Carroll 42

In the fifth-place game, Warren rolled paced West Carroll 78-62. Warren was a tough defensive unit, forcing the Thunder into 27 turnovers. West Carroll committed 16 turnovers in the first half.

Megan Roberts led Warren with a game-high 25 points. Roberts went nine-of-20 shooting from the field.

Katie Wiersema and Kara Durward scored 10 points apiece for the Thunder.

Eastland Too Much for Scales Mound

SAVANNA In the third place round of the West Carroll Tournament Thursday night, Eastland defeats Scales Mound 46-35 in a low-scoring boys' high school basketball matchup.

The game, played in front of a spirited crowd on a cold blustery night, consisted of a good shooting effort from more than one Eastland boys' basketball player.

Tyler Zumdahl was the leading scorer for Eastland, scoring a game-high 17 points. Zumdahl, a key player for the Cougars, was perfect from the free throw line, finishing 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Tony Dunlap added 11 points for Eastland in the tournament triumph.

East Dubuque 61, Galena 58 (OT)

In another West Carroll Tournament game, East Dubuque outlasted Galena 61-58 in overtime.

The Pirates found themselves on the losing end of a 50-39 score at the conclusion of the third quarter. Nathan Bingham reeled off eight of his game-high 32 points to get Galena back into the game.

Polo Holiday Tournament

Oregon Outlasts Milledgeville

POLO Milledgeville nearly pulled off a win over Oregon in the Polo Tournament Thursday night. The Missiles scored 22 points in the fourth quarter. Despite the late spirited Milledgeville rally, Oregon managed to hold on to beat Milledgeville 50-45.

Milledgeville carried a hard-fought 23-22 lead into halftime. Oregon excelled in the second half, building up a 36-23 lead.

The Missiles had their changes in the tournament game but couldn't capitalize late.

Forreston Beats Polo

In another Polo Tournament tilt, Morgann McCoy scored a game-high 14 points to lead Forreston past the host team.

McCoy was a clutch shooter from the free throw line late for Forreston, hitting all four of the free throw attempts she was afforded in the fourth quarter.

Julie Hayes led Polo with a team-high 11 points.
