Finally, in 1903 they had a song, "Navajo," accepted by a stage show, "Nancy Brown" and it became a hit. That breakthrough opened some doors to the future and they sold more. At the time "cowboy" songs were the fashion and their "Cheyenne" became a hit also despite the competition. It was the beginning of a popular songwriting team who together wrote over three hundred tunes.

Charles E. “Bud” Spencer, Jr

Charles E. “Bud” Spencer, Jr. age 74, of Thomson, Illinois, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois, and one day before his birthday. A Funeral Service will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson, Illinois with Reverend Bonnie Davies officiating. Inurnment will be in Lower York Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Bud’s name to the York Township Library in Thomson to be used for Railroad related books and materials. Bud was born December 4, 1933, the son of Charles and Lenna Mae (Rice) Spencer, Sr. in Thomson. On April 27, 1956, Bud married Donna Rose Lahre. She passed away January 13, 1990.

Bud retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after thirty-eight years of service. He was an avid Chicago Cubs; he enjoyed watching professional wrestling and old Western films on television. Bud loved talking about the railroad and sharing stories with others, his greatest joy was time spent with family and friends at Kyle’s Tavern in Thomson.

Bud will be dearly missed by his six children, Shelley (Jim) Falls of Thomson, Lenna Hodge and fiancé Mike Hammerand of Thomson and Carla Spencer of Thomson, Bradley (Sarah) Spencer of Savanna, Illinois; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and five sisters, Janet (Freeman) Edwards of Minnesota, Vada (Frank) Waities of Galena, Illinois, Pat (Elmer) Wurster, Joyce (Frank) LaShelle, Bonnie (Angel) Ayala, all of Thomson. Bud was preceded in death by his wife, Donna; both parents; his sisters, Betty Sykes; two infant sisters; and one infant brother.

Leonard J. Collins

Leonard J. Collins, age 72, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2008 at Big Meadows Nursing Facility, Savanna, Illinois. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Carroll, with Pastor Bob Ziebarth officiating. Visitation will be held 12:00 ­ 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2008 at the First Baptist Church, Mt. Carroll. Cremation Rites have been accorded.

Richard L. Zuck

Richard L. Zuck, age 83, of Lanark, Illinois, died Thursday, November 27, 2008 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Lanark Church of the Brethren, Lanark, Illinois. Pastor John Sgro will officiate. Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 ­ 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Memorials may be given in Richard's name for the Lanark Church of the Brethren, the Lanark Public Library and the Ogle County Hospice Association. Richard was born May 27, 1925 in Lanark at his grandmother's home on East Prairie St., the son of Homer and Edmo (Rahn) Zuck. He attended the Union Country School and was a graduate of the Lanark High School with the Class of 1943. On September 4, 1948 Richard was united in marriage to Evelyn Piesen.

Richard farmed all of his life near Lanark. He loved serving the Lord. He was a member of the Lanark Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Church board chairman and choir leader. His Bible was truly worn from constant reading.

Richard had a beautiful tenor voice and had a passion for music. He enjoyed golfing, antiquing, watching the Fighting Illini, and reading, especially about the Amish life. Richard enjoyed talking with folks and learning about their lives. His many grandchildren have fond memories of him spending as much time as he could, entertaining them.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Evelyn of Lanark, six children, Susan (Charlie) Winterton of Leaf River, Bob (Connie) Zuck of Lanark, Jim (Vickie) Zuck of Chadwick, Karen (Mike) Bushman of Lanark, David (Carolyn) Zuck of Dakota and Michael (Connie) Zuck of Shannon; a sister in-law, Carolee Zuck of Mt. Carroll; a brother in-law, David (Elaine) Piesen of Cleveland, Ohio; twelve grandchildren, Brian (Robin) Bookman, Sarah (Heath) Lessman, Laura Bookman, Cara (Craig) Huber, Jason Zuck, Jenny (Carl) Lyons, Ben (Emilee) Bushman, Joe Bushman, Josh (Angie) Zuck, Ryan Zuck, Heather Zuck and Adam Zuck; nine great grandchildren; several step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Richard is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arnold; and son in-law, Bruce Bookman.
