Christine Marie Furgason

BOWIE, MD—Christine Marie Furgason was born in Sterling, IL on October 2, 1956, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Queckboerner) Furgason.

She was preceded in death by her father and brother Lane.

She graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She worked for the USDA as a meat grader prior to relocating to Clinton County and beginning her career with the U.S. Customs Service in the late 1980’s. The last part of her career with Customs and Border Protection she served as Branch Chief, Data Quality & Research Branch, in the Office of International Trade in Washington, D.C.

Christine was a mentor to many and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including the prestigious Commissioners Award.

But what she will be remembered most for is her love of life and all it had to offer. She never lost her childlike excitement to experience everything. She was game for anything: biking, hiking, white water rafting, skilling (but a badly broken leg on her first time out on Titus Mountain ended that sport). Chris enjoyed board games, technology and every new gadget that came on the market. She was an avid reader, movie buff and sports fan. She loved the time spent on her motorcycle and sailboat with family and friends.

She loved travel, visiting all 50 states, Mexico, Europe and the Caribbean. One item on her bucket list that she was unable to complete this fall was one final trip to the North Country to visit her friends.

Most notably, Christine gave selflessly of her time, talents and resources to everyone who had a need, no matter how big or small. She loved her family and friends with a passion and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them.

Christine died on December 22, 2011 at her home in Bowie, MD, under the care of Hospice and her family. Even in death, she continued to give by donating her body to science.

Chris was memorialized on a beautiful sunny day at St. Matthews United Methodist Church on January 6. Per her request, there was a reception following with fine food and a Guinness toast.
