SAVANNA – A cold and snowy Saturday morning didn’t stop local boys and girls from getting up early for some good old fashioned fun to show off the hard work put forth into constructing a race car out of a block of wood.
On February 8th, at the West Carroll Primary School in Savanna, the long standing tradition of the Pinewood/Powder-Puff Derby took place with the help of the Savanna Lions Club and the American Legion. Excitement filled the air as racers watched their cars make their way down the state of the art track that was purchased by the Fran Gable family, and used only twice.
Christiene Gable was at the controls of a specially made computer program that has a picture of the racer, and keeps track of each cars’ speed, and their ranking in each race.
Ric Cass, a lifelong Boy Scout and member of the recently re-developed Mount Carroll Troop #51, stated “I am astounded by this equipment. I haven’t been to a Derby race in 35 years.”

Savanna Pack 48 Leader Mike Bates was the Master of Ceremonies for the event which ran from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. A lot of hard work and dedication was put into making the event fun and exciting for the kids.
Don Nolte of the Lions Club volunteered his time sitting at the end of the track for the days activities. Door prizes were awarded, and a food stand was available by the Relay for Life with a variety of snacks, and a 50/50 raffle. Aubrey Charles of Mount Carroll won the $30.00 prize.
A Vintage Race, an Outlaw Race (with adults allowed), and an Open class race were also held. Racers that qualified will advance to the Pecatonica Derby in April. Be sure to thank the volunteers that help to make sure our children have the opportunity to belong to such great programs.
