LANARK – In a brief ceremony at the Eastland High School Media Center, senior athlete Skylar Paulson announced his intention to attend McKendree University, a private liberal arts college located in Lebanon, Illinois. Founded in 1828, it is the oldest college in Illinois. The McKendree Bearcats sports program is in the process of transitioning athletics from the NAIA and member of the American Midwest Conference to NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
Paulson will study to achieve a 4-year degree for Sports Training, as well as Strength and Conditioning, then possibly pursue a doctorate in Physical Therapy.
“Thanks for all of your support, and to Coach Asche, throughout my career,” Paulson told the assembled group of family, friends, school staff, and teammates. “It was a close decision between Quincy College and McKendree. I liked the coaches, and the idea of playing for a new program.”
Paulson said he will play what McKendree calls a “U-Back, a cross between a wide receiver and a tight end, in their pro-style offense.”
“This shows the importance of academics,” said Eastland-Pearl City Head Coach Randy Asche of Paulson’s commitment. “Skylar never makes excuses, always works hard. He’s been a great team leader, and will use this opportunity and his talent to get a great education.
“He has incentive to be granted a ‘full ride’ if he becomes a starter,” Asche added. “But his abilities, intelligence and work ethic will help set him apart at this level. You can do that with academics.”
“I’m glad the decision-making is over,” Paulson concluded. “Now I can focus on basketball.” Paulson is the starting center on the Eastland Cougar basketball team, who claimed 4th place in the IHSA Class A tournament in 2013.
