Carroll County Farm Bureau

By Chastity Welch, Farm Bureau Manager

If you are interested in job safety and health, you will want to attend the Safety and Health Conference that OSHA and Sauk Valley Community College are sponsoring on Tuesday, March 12 from 8 am. to 3 p.m. at Sauk Valley Community College. I know the letters OSHA throw up red flags for some but after two years of working with Kathy Webb at the North Aurora office, I can tell you I wouldn’t be scared. This meeting is an excellent way to meet with OSHA and other safety and health specialists in a relaxed environment. They are really there to help you and educate you.

The conference will have different tracks you can follow. There will be a construction track, safety track, health track and a grain track. Registration is open to anyone looking to learn more about safety. The grain track will be presented by the Grain Handling Safety Coalition which I have been a part of since the tragedy here in Mt. Carroll.

Cost of the conference is $30 which covers the conference, handouts, continental breakfast, and lunch. For more information, please contact Dana Chacon at 815-835-6365. Registration deadline is Monday, March 5.

Ladies, have you signed up for the Women in Agriculture Conference yet? If not you have till February 28 before the registration fee increases from $50 to $60. The conference is set for Friday, March 22 at Jumer’s Casino and Hotel in Rock Island. The day will kick off at 8:45 a.m. with Erika Eckley presenting on “Common Mistakes in Agricultural Estate Planning and Leasing”. Erika is with the Iowa State University Center for Agricultural Law and Taxation.

The day will be full of important information that you as a woman in ag will benefit from. The day has been designed to fit your needs whether you are looking to follow a “business” track which includes marketing and farm management, or maybe you prefer “special topics” which includes food marketing, ag in the classroom and healthy eating, or you may want a “legislative/government” track. Or you can pick and choose from each track. The day will be whatever you choose to make it!

Registration forms are available at our office, or you can register online at www.womeninagricultureconference.com. A full agenda for the day is listed on the website. Registration includes morning refreshments, lunch, all speakers, and handouts. Don’t delay, get registered today! Last year we had over 200 attendees!

The 2013 Tractor Drive is now planned! We have scheduled it for Friday, July 19th. We will again be leaving from the Eastland High School. We will head over to Shannon to stop at Lion’s Park. We will then head to Lake Carroll where we will eat at the Clubhouse, and then take a drive around the lake before we get back the Eastland. Registration forms are now available at our office and on our website.

We still have a few of the holiday nuts available if you have eaten your supply already. We have chocolate covered bridge mix, cashews, pecan halves and pieces, and pecan clusters. Once our supply is gone, it will be gone till November so stop in today before you miss out.
