Morrison’s McDonnell Brothers Take Two Titles

By Mike Nester For The Prairie Advocate News

It was a pretty good Saturday night, Feb. 18, for the McDonnell family at Assembly Hall as the brothers from Morrison both won state titles at the IHSA Class 1A Wrestling Tournament in Champaign.

Mark McDonnell closed out an impressive grappling career with his second straight title capturing the first place medal at 145 pounds and the his brother, Matt, followed with a state title of his own at 195 pounds.

Mark pinned Talon Paul of Stillman Valley in the first period of the title bout while Matt defeated Lena-Winslow’s Jared Starver 6-2 in his championship match.

The championship bout at 145 pounds was a repeat performance of last week’s Byron Sectional title bout against Talon Paul, who entered the title at 30-3.

McDonnell made quick work of Paul in the finals with two takedowns for a 4-2 lead and then used a near-side cradle to put Paul to his back for the pin with four seconds left in the first period. The senior ends his season at 26-1.

Mark McDonnell began his repeat performance with a 12-2 major decision over Seth Purell of Vandalia on Thursday and then reached the semi-finals with a dominating 9-3 win over Brad Blechschmidt (30-6) of Lisle.

In the semi-finals against Alex Valentine of Seneca (30-3), the senior had his hands full tied at 4-4 after two periods, but McDonnell got a reversal for a 6-4 lead and then pinned Valentine at the 5:37 mark.

McDonnell ends his career as a four-time state medalist taking second at 140 his sophomore year and third at 125 pounds as a freshman.

After not qualifying for last year’s state tourney, Matt McDonnell made the most of this year’s trip to state, capturing a state title at 195 pounds.

In the title bout, McDonnell (43-2) recorded a first period takedown and a second period reversal for a 4-2 lead. He added another takedown in the final two minutes for a 6-2 victory.

The Morrison senior opened the tournament with a 18-2 technical fall over Brandon Webb (30-13) of Seneca then beat Kenny Lindsey (32-3) of St. Joseph-Odgen 5-3.

In the semi-finals, McDonnell opened grabbed a 2-0 first period lead over Frank Hollo (36-7) of Litchfield and after an escape to open up the second period, added another take down and two back points for a 7-0 lead en route to a 10-2 win.

Other area wrestlers

West Carroll’s Jeff Casey went 2-2 at the state tournament but didn’t place at 120 pounds, ending his sophomore season at 35-10.

Casey opened in impressive fashion on Thursday pinning Macomb Sectional Champion Brandon Rohig of Kewanee (32-7) in the first period. On Friday morning, the West Carroll grappler fell to Casey Brown (34-6) of Coal City 14-4, putting Casey in the wrestlebacks.

He responded with a 8-4 decision over Payton Stiefle of Robinson but Casey’s chances for a medal ended on Saturday morning when he was pinned by Plano’s Jose Villarreal (35-7) in 3:05.

“Jeff represented us really nice, he wrestled hard and ran into a couple of tough guys. Great learning experience for a sophomore,” West Carroll head coach Jeff McIntyre said after the tournament.

Josh Alber (44-0) of Dakota won the title at 120 pounds, while Jake Apple (182) and Ty Harmston ( 220) both placed second at their respective weight classes. Other area place winners included Gunner Wenger, Le-Win, 3rd, 106 pounds; Carver James, Dakota, 3rd, 126 pounds; Austin McPeek, Le-Win, 3rd, 132 pounds; and Quincy Kalkbrenner, Le-Win, 3rd, 138 pounds.
