Cougars Slip Past Panthers

The Cougars took an early lead and held on for the eleven point win at home on Monday evening. Eastland jumped out to a six point lead after the first quarter and held that same margin at the half. They extended their lead to eleven points after the third quarter and broke even with the Panthers in the final period.

Tony Dunlap lead the Cougars pouring in thirty four points with Collin Macomber adding eleven. Clayton Stouffer led Le-Win with seventeen and teammate Fritz Werhane added sixteen points.

Dakota Defeats Missiles

Milledgeville found it difficult to put points on the scoreboard Tuesday night in Milledgeville, falling to the Indians 35-24. Milledgeville fell behind early in the contest, with Dakota opening up a fourteen to three first quarter lead. The Indians had trouble finding the basket in the second frame, managing to only score a pair of points while the Missiles put up six. Milledgeville was outscored eleven to seven in the third and both teams put up eight points in the fourth.

Landon Ketchum led the Indians with eleven points while Kyle Benning added seven. Kurt Landis led Milledgeville with twelve points and Carrigan Hunter added six points.

Pearl City Falls To East Dubuque

The Wolves stayed even with the Warriors after one quarter and held a three point lead at the half. East Dubuque held the Wolves to eight second half points while scoring nineteen of their own in the East Dubuque 44-36 victory in Pearl City. The Wolves managed only one bucket and four free throws in the second half to fall behind the Warriors. East Dubuque’s Tyler McLane led the Warriors scoring twenty three points.Pearl City’s Travis Schiess led the Wolves with fourteen.

Eastland Falls To South Beloit

The South Beloit Sobos traveled to Lanark on Tuesday night and used a strong fourth quarter effort to defeat the Cougars 74-70. South Beloit held a slim four point lead after quarter number one and extended that lead to seven points at the half.

The Cougars claimed the third quarter and the lead 53-49, outscoring the Sobos nineteen to eight in the period. But, South Beloit came charging out in the final frame to take the quarter (25-17) and the game.

Katonka Friar led South Beloit (20-4) in the scoring column with twenty two points and teammate Denzel Woods added fifteen. Eastland (22-3) was led by Tony Dunlap’s twenty one points with Mack Byers adding sixteen.

Forreston Escapes With A Win

Dillon Prowant’s shot as time expired in the fourth quarter rimmed in and out giving the Cardinals a slim three point 53-50 victory over West Carroll on Tuesday eveing in Mt. Carroll. West Carroll held a one point lead 16-15 after the first period and extended that lead to seven points at the halftime intermission. Forreston outscored the Thunder eighteen to ten in the third and took a slim two point lead 42-20 in the final frame.

With about three seconds to play in regulation, the Cardinals missed two free throws to give West Carroll one last chance to send the game to overtime. A half court pass and a feed on the left wing to Prowant set up the potential game tying shot which didn’t drop.

Thunder head coach Josh Knuth commented, “It was a good high school basketball game tonight. We had a bad third quarter and that was the difference. We executed very well on the last play and got a good look and just missed it in and out. It’s a tough one to swallow but as long as we learn from it we will be just fine.”

Mustangs Take Care Of Business On The Road

The Morrison Mustangs traveled to Fulton on Tuesday night and came home with a Three Rivers conference victory, beating the Steamers 58-39. Morrison (19-10, 11-2) took control from the start and led by four points after the first period. Morrison extended their lead to nine at the half and to fourteen at the end of three quarters. Fulton just couldn’t seem to get anything going offensively or on defense to stop the Mustangs.

Fulton falls to 7-18 overall with the loss. Travis McBride paced the Mustangs pouring in seventeen points with teammate Kyle Janssen adding fifteen. Joe Tomman led Fulton in a losing effort, scoring sixteen for the Steamers.

Thunder Pick Up Road Win Over Cougars

Despite trailing by seven points after the first quarter, the West Carroll Thunder ramped up their game and knocked off the hosts on Thursday night in Lanark 76-65. West Carroll outscored the Cougars in the second period nineteen to ten to go into the locker room at the half leading thirty three to thirty one.

West Carroll continued their hot play in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars twenty four to seventeen to take a fifty seven to forty eight lead into the final period. Free throws down the stretch would prove to be the deciding factor as the Thunder hit ten of eleven free throws to seal the victory.

West Carroll’s Nate Law led the Thunder with twenty two points and twelve rebounds and Tyler Brashaw added nineteen points and eight boards. Eastland’s Tony Dunlap led the Cougars with twenty four points and Mack Byers and Collin Macomber scored ten points apiece.

Thunder head coach Josh Knuth commented, “We played a solid game all the way around tonight. We had some guys step up and make big plays down the stretch. It was a good way to finish the regular season. We still have to get better defensively if we want to advance in the post season. I was proud of the way we battled through some adversity tonight.”

Cougars Handle Wildcats

Eastland traveled to River Ridge on Saturday and came home with the 68-51 road win to end the regular season. The Cougars jumped out to a seven point first quarter lead (13-6) and extended their lead to fourteen points by the halftime intermission (29-15). The second half was a relatively even battle with Eastland taking a three point edge in the second half scoring (39-36).

The Cougars had four different players score in double figures with Collin Macomber leading the way with sixteen points. Tony Dunlap added fourteen, Brad Dunlap twelve and Mack Byers scored ten points.

Eastland will play Wednesday evening at the Fulton Regional against the winner of the Polo-Fulton matchup. River Ridge opens play at the East Dubuque Regional against Pearl City.

Mustangs Defeat Prophets

Morrison used a huge fourth quarter to defeat the Prophetstown Prophets on Saturday night 53-45. The contest was knotted at thirteen after the first quarter and the Prophets held a slim twenty six to twenty four edge at the half. Prophetstown extended their lead to six points (37-31) after three quarters. Morrison took control of the game in the final frame outscoring the Prophets twenty two to eight to take the contest. The Mustangs (20-10, 12-2) were led in the scoring column by Travis McBride with twenty points.

Morrison opens up Regional play on Wednesday night where they will play the host West Carroll Thunder in Mt. Carroll.

Mississippi Flyway Chapter-Waterfowl USA Holds Banquet

Mike Cyze of ESPN Outdoor Radio will be the emcee for the Mississippi Flyway chapter banquet. He is scheduled to help at the local Waterfowl USA chapter’s ninetieth fundraiser. The wetland conservation group will be hosting a Sportsmen’s Banquet on February 27th at Buck’s Barn in Thomson, Illinois. The banquet will be held in the “Back Forty” with doors opening at 5:30.

The event will begin with a social hour where members can take chances in many raffles involving hunting products and hunting guns. A raffle just for water fowlers will feature a waterfowl gun. Big Foot goose decoys, a layout blind and more. For the deer hunters, a deer hunt raffle will be held with items like tree stands, deer carts and other items that will be given away. The ladies will have their own raffle featuring a pink shotgun as the top prize.

The Mississippi Flyway chapter expects many hunting families to attend this year’s banquet. The chapter will host a “Free” kid’s gun raffle to encourage youths to begin a passion for the out of doors. Many area businesses and individuals donated to this raffle to help keep youths involved with the traditions of hunting. The youths also have a raffle just for them that involve throwing a ring over a Big Foot gooses head to multiply their chances to win a gun, a bicycle or other sporting goods.

An auction featuring wildlife art, sporting goods, and collectibles will follow the dinner. Barn Ridge Kennel of Geneseo has donated a registered female yellow Labrador pup for this year’s fundraiser. Money raised at the event is used for local wetland conservation. The chapter recently donated to help the Clinton County Conservation board purchase Ring Neck Marsh in Clinton County. Also the chapter has a “Shallow Water Wetland” fund that helps landowners with the cost of developing wetlands. The committee is also active in artificial nesting with many wood duck houses and goose floats in area backwaters.

Stateline Music Foundation

The Stateline Music Foundation is offering two awards of $500 and $250 to high school seniors (public, private or home schooled) who are graduating in 2010 and who will major in music in either a junior or four-year college or university school of music. Auditions for the awards are open to residents of Jo Daviess, Carroll, Stephenson, Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, DeKalb, Whiteside and Lee Counties in Illinois or attending high school in those counties.

The auditions, open to voice, piano, organ, strings, woodwinds, brasses and percussion, will be held in St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 South Park Blvd. in Freeport, on Saturday, April 24, 2010, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The application form and repertoire requirements are available by contacting Kenneth Drake (11481 N.
