Dorothy Grace "Granny" Funderburgh

Dorothy Grace "Granny" Funderburgh, age 90, of Morrison died Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison.

Visitations were held from 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison. Cremation rites followed visitations. No services were held. A memorial has been established in her name at Four Seasons Living Center, Morrison.

Dorothy was born March 7, 1916 in Elmira, the daughter of John and Cora (Delphy) Phillips. She was educated in Elmira Grade Schools. Dorothy married Willis Funderburgh on April 28, 1934 in Hillsdale; he preceded her in death on June 4, 1970.

Dorothy worked at Elkay Manufacturing in Lanark for 20 years. After her retirement, she cooked at several different restaurants in Chadwick. She loved to cook, and was the kitchen boss wherever she went. She was an Avid Cubs Fan, and loved having her grandchildren and great grandchildren around her.

Dorothy's family includes four daughters, Frances Dessing of Mendota, Ann (Mrs. Jeff) Peters of Freeport, Carshon Funderburgh of Sterling, and Linda (Randy) Smit of Morrison; son, David Funderburgh of Chadwick; seventeen grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren; brother, Donald (Barb) Phillips of Galva.

Her husband; three sons, Willis Jr., John and Jim Funderburgh; son-in-law, Robert Dessing; three sisters, Hazel Hegwood, Eva Hindeliter and Bertha Longhelt; and two brothers, Harold and John Phillips, precede Dorothy in death.

Joan A. Schroeder

Joan A. Schroeder, age 77, of Preston, IA died on Monday, January 29, 2007 at the Bickford Cottage Assisted Living Center, Clinton, IA.

Funeral Services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, IA with Reverend Dwaine Priebe of Salem Lutheran Church, Spragueville, IA officiating. Inurnment will be in the Spragueville Cemetery, Spragueville, IA at a later date. Friends called from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, IA. Joan was born on September 2, 1929, the daughter of Charles A. and Johanna (Croce) Gool in Clinton, IA. She attended Clinton High School graduating Class of 1947. On May 2, 1948, Joan married Hobart Schroeder.

Joan loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed being a homemaker and working as an In-Home Caregiver for many years. In her younger years she also worked at Hoenicke's Restaurant in Preston and Bell Telephone in Clinton, IA.

Joan was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville, IA; the ALCW; the "DAR" Daughters of the American Revolution and the Clinton County Farm Bureau. She enjoyed traveling, sleigh riding, singing and playing the piano.

Joan will be dearly missed by her husband, Hobart of rural Preston; three sons, Stephen (Kathleen) Schroeder of Atlanta, GA, Thomas Schroeder of Des Moines, IA and Timothy (Cheryl) Schroeder of Washington, NC; two daughters, Judy (Hans) Henningsen of Preston, IA and Jill (Thomas) Jepsen of Des Moines, IA; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren; two brothers, Charles (Marilyn) Gool of Clinton and John (Donna) Gool of Atlanta, GA. Both parents; and a granddaughter, Nicole Jepsen, precede Joan in death.

Wayne Eldon Sword

Wayne Eldon Sword, age 59 of Mt. Carroll died Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at his home, after an extended illness.

A Memorial Service was held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 3, 2007 at the Frank-Law Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll. Chaplain Don Swanson of FHN Memorial Hospital officiated. After the service family and friends gathered at Land of Oz, Mt. Carroll for a Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Wayne's name. Wayne was born in Freeport on October 19, 1947, the son of Eldon and Alverta (Wirtjes) Sword. He graduated from Shannon High School in 1966 and served in the U.S. Army for two years. Wayne married Carol Warta on July 17, 1999 at their home in Mt. Carroll. He was previously married to Carolyn (Johnson) Deininger and Mary Anne (Gustason) Janssen.

Wayne enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, farming, driving truck, hunting, fishing, traveling and being outdoors. Wayne treasured the time he spent with his wife, Carol.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Carol of Mt. Carroll; two daughters, Roslyn Sword of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Carri Murphy (fiancé, David Oslager) of Elgin; three grandchildren Alex, Leah and Rachel; one sister, Sharon (Larry) Butt; two brothers, John (Julie) Sword, and Jason (Tracy) Sword; and numerous nieces and nephews. His constant companion Tuggers the cat will miss him.

His son, Adrian; his stepson, David; his parents and grandparents, precede Wayne in death.

Darrell R. DeGraff

Darrell R. DeGraff, age 42, of Milledgeville, died Thursday, February 1, 2007 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Mr. DeGraff was born February 20, 1964 in Freeport, the son of Lewis R. and Betty J. (Young) DeGraff. He graduated from Lanark High School in 1982. He graduated from Western Illinois University in 1986 where he was the President of the Hoof and Horn Club, a member of the WIU Livestock Judging Team, and the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He was a previous member of Carroll County Sherriff's Mounted Patrol and was the current President of Northern Illinois Angus Association. He married Barbara "Bobbi" Phillips on March 29, 1991 in Milledgeville and starting in 1990, worked for the Illinois Department of Agriculture as a Meat and Poultry Inspector and was promoted to Regional Supervisor in October of 1998.

Survivors include his wife of Milledgeville; his parents, Lewis R. and Betty J. (Young) DeGraff of Lanark; one daughter, Sammi DeGraff of Milledgeville; one son, Jed DeGraff of Milledgeville; and one sister, Deb (Steve) Edwards of Salisbury, MO. His grandparents precede Mr. DeGraff in death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Milledgeville Brethren Church with Reverend Russell Gordon officiating. Visitations were Monday, February 5, 2007 from 3 - 7 PM at the church. Burial will conclude the services at White Oak Cemetery in Forreston.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory.

Walter "Bud" Wilson Hamilton

Walter "Bud" Wilson Hamilton, age 70, of Savanna died Saturday, February 3, 2007, at the Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Reverend Michael Jones of the York Baptist Church, Thomson will officiate. A Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Garden in Freeport. Bud was born on August 10, 1936, in Mt. Carroll, the son of Bromley and Mae (Henson) Hamilton. He graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1956, after enlisting with the United States Navy in 1955. He married Karen Kay Trude on May 29, 1971, in Savanna.

Bud was a Machinist with Dupont in Clinton, Iowa, for thirty-two years. He served in the United States Navy from 1955-1959. Bud enjoyed life to the fullest; he always had a smile and a feisty attitude even though he struggled with illness for over thirty years. He had an amazing will to live, giving faith to all those who knew him. Bud enjoyed spending time with his family and looking after his grandchildren. He loved to attend all of their school activities. Bud enjoyed traveling and visiting with Country Music Stars. Bud loved to read and watch wrestling. He always looked forward to his daily coffee club meetings and going to local restaurants to visit with friends.

Bud is survived by his wife, Karen; one son, Dwayne (Diane) Hamilton of Savanna; three daughters, Marsha Wilson of Strawberry Point, Iowa, Renee' (Todd) Robbe of Savanna, and Kim (Brent) Keil of Camanche, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Stephni Wilson, Jesse Wilson, Justin Hamilton, Cora Wilson, Kelsey Ganos, Brooke Keil, and Sydney Hamilton; one sister, Eileen (Robert) McIntyre of Savanna.

His parents; two brothers, Paul and Maynard; two sisters, Dolores Brandt and Bonnie Yenney; and one nephew, Victor Brandt, precede Bud in death.

Alta Hockman

Alta Hockman, age 84, of Savanna died Saturday, February 3, 2007 at the Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, Iowa.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 8, 2007 at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna, with Reverend Philip Bigelow officiating. Burial will be in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 6­8 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Alta was born on April 19, 1922 the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Haas) Haring. She attended Savanna area schools. Alta worked at General Electric in Morrison for twenty-seven years retiring in 1986. Alta was a lifetime member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer worker for Meals on Wheels in Savanna for many years. Alta enjoyed crafts, crossword puzzles, ceramics, cooking and baking. Most of all Alta enjoyed spending time with her family.

Alta will be missed by one son, Terry (Deborah) Hockman of Savanna; two daughters, Linda Stricklin of Rock Falls and Judy (Richard) Castro of Rock Falls; six grandchildren, Eric Castro, Todd Castro, Michael Hockman, Debra Popkin, Randy Stricklin and Chad Stricklin; nine great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; two sister-in-laws, Gladys Haring of Polo and Beulah Haring of Burlington, Iowa.

Her parents; five brothers, Leland, Clarence, Walter, Earl and Roy; and one sister, Irene Haring, precede Alta in death.

Nancy J. McKinley

Nancy J. McKinley, age 63 of Hanover passed away Friday, February 2, 2007 at the Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, Florida.

Funeral Services will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Hanover United Methodist Church, Hanover, with Reverends Kendrick and Lynne Matthews officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Friends may call from 10­12 noon. Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Hanover United Methodist Church. Nancy was born December 11, 1943 the daughter of Wilfred and Margaret (Virtue) Armstrong, in Savanna. She attended Black Country School in rural Hanover and graduated from the Hanover High School, Class of 1961. Nancy went on to attend Bayless Business School in Dubuque, Iowa. On October 27, 1962, Nancy married her high school sweetheart, John McKinley in Hanover.

Nancy began working as a Secretary at the Savanna Army Depot, eventually moving up to Quality Control Clerk. She worked ten years as the Secretary to the Superintendent of Schools for the Amboy Illinois School District. Nancy worked since August of 2000 for the Miner Insurance Agency in Hanover, where she was a Secretary and an Insurance Agent. She was a member of the Hanover Methodist Church and the Women's Club of the Church.

Nancy enjoyed taking long walks and holding hands with her loving husband, John. Sitting by the fireplace at home while reading a good book. Nancy enjoyed bird watching, she loved having the family over for Sunday dinner, playing cards, and with great joy she handed out "Hershey Kisses" as her way of sharing love and friendship. Nancy loved helping people, always showing compassion and giving of herself. She was a great lady with a great heart. Her faith in Jesus was her true strength.

Nancy will be dearly missed by her husband, John of Hanover; one daughter, Tamara (Captain Paul) Fuligni of Bremerton, Washington; her mother, Margaret Armstrong of Hanover; one brother, John (Cheri) Armstrong of Saucier, Mississippi; two sisters, Marjorie (Rod) Brand of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Linda (Forrest) Pratt of Hanover.

Her father, Wilfred Armstrong, precedes Nancy in death.

Bob Rabbitt

Bob Rabbitt, age 82, of Milledgeville died Sunday, January 28, 2007 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Mr. Rabbitt was born September 29, 1924 in Carter, WI the son of Lester and Rebecca (Fagen) Rabbitt. He was raised by his foster parents, David and Nellie McDowell. He married Lois Stinemyer on July 20, 1956 in Milledgeville. He served in the US Army and also worked as a livestock buyer for Oscar Meyer and farmed. He was a member of the Milledgeville Brethren Church where he was an usher, lit the candles every Sunday, and loved his church family. He was also a Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife of Milledgeville; one son, Barry Rabbitt of Sterling; one brother-in-law, Harold Williamson of Montello, WI; one sister-in-law, Ardith McDowell; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his foster parents; one brother, Ted Rabbitt; three sisters, Evelyn Urben, Eileen Smith, and Clora Williamson; one foster brother, Don McDowell; and one foster sister, Vera Miller.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 1, 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Milledgeville Brethren Church with Reverend Russell Gordon officiating. Visitations were Wednesday, January 31, 2007 from 5-7 PM at the church and Thursday from 1-2 PM at the church. Burial concluded the services at Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory.

McDonald-Allen-Grennan Funeral Home in Milledgeville completed the arrangements.
