The Eastland Cougars outlasted the Dakota Indians on Friday night 45-36 to win the River Ridge Sectional Championship. The victory advances Eastland (27-4) to the DeKalb Super Sectional, where they take on the Newark Norsemen (31-2). They play at 6 pm on Tuesday, March 9 and a win will advance then to the Final Four and on to the Civic Center in Peoria where they would play on Friday, March 12.
Friday’s game was a back and forth affair with Eastland and then Dakota taking leads. The Indians were able to take a two point lead in at half time (19-17). The Cougars made some adjustments and took a fourteen to eight third quarter advantage in the final period. Eastland used a few Dakota fourth quarter turnovers to finally put the game away.
The Cougars Reid Lessman scored fourteen points to lead Eastland in scoring with teammate Collin Macomber adding ten points and pulling down fourteen rebounds. Austin Oberbruner led the Indians with a dozen points.

Despite poor shooting from the field (15-41) the Eastland Cougars managed to have just enough to hold off a gritty Indian Creek team 44-40 to advance to the River Ridge Sectional final.
Eastland led throughout the most of the contest as the Timberwolves shooting was not very successful either. Both teams missed numerous opportunities to take leads with turnovers and missed shots around the basket.
In the end, the Cougars proved to have a little more poise and made shots from the field and the free throw line to ensure they would be taking on Dakota in Friday evening’s Sectional Championship game.
Eastland’s Mack Byers and Collin Macomber shared scoring honors with twelve points apiece. Indian Creek was led by Eddie Soler with twelve points and teammate Seth Sanderson adding eleven.
