Esther Schreiner Handel

Esther Schreiner Handel, 94 of Chadwick, IL died Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in Clinton, IA.

She was born March 3, 1914 in Fairhaven Township Township, Carroll County, IL, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Eisfeller) Schreiner.

She attended Oakville Grade School and was a 1931 graduate of Chadwick High School. She married Lloyd Handel on July 9, 1935 at the Lutheran parsonage in Mt. Carroll.

She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, member of the Carroll County Cancer Board, and organizer of the Chadwick Senior citizens, a member of First Lutheran Church in Chadwick, where she was a member of the choir for over 30 years. She was a charter member of the Golden Rule Circle which was organized in 1935.

She is survived by her son; Gary (Diane) Handel of Fulton, two granddaughters; Amy (Steve) Lawson of Shannon and Reba Corbin of Clinton, IA, two great grandsons; Micah Corbin of Clinton and Kendall Lawson of Shannon. She is also survived by step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and four nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Lloyd on Dec. 26, 1991, a daughter-in-law Sue, sisters Eva Doden and Lavonne Clevidence, and a brother in infancy.

Services will be on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chadwick with Pastor Marcia Strahl officiating. Burial will be in the Chadwick Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 P.M. on Friday at the church. Memorials have been established in her memory for the Caroline Mark Home and First Evangelical Church.

Harvey D. Norton

Harvey D. Norton, age 90, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, March 8th, at the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna, Reverend Michael Wey will officiate. Burial will follow at Wyoming Township Cemetery in Wyoming, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm Friday, March 7th, at the Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. Harvey Dale Norton was born September 20, 1917, in Wyoming, Iowa, the son of George R. and Allie (Green) Norton. Harvey married Dorothy Zirkelbach on June 1, 1942, in Maquoketa, Iowa. She passed away on November 6, 2006.

Harvey worked on his family farm for many years, and later went to work as a civilian inspector in the Special Weapons Division for the Department of Defense at the Savanna Army Depot. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Savanna, the U & I Club, a lifetime member of the Mississippi Flyway Sportsman's Club, and the Woodcarving Club in Clinton, Iowa. Harvey enjoyed playing the harmonica, trap shooting, and woodcarving.

Harvey will be dearly missed by one daughter, Candace Davis of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Brett) Nelson and Tyrrell (Meghan) Davis; and one great-grandchild, Alexandria McConkey.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Dorothy L. Malone

Dorothy L. Malone, age 90, of Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Mercy South Skilled Care in Clinton, Iowa. It was Dorothy's wish to donate her body to the University of Iowa for medical research. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Savanna Bible Church, Savanna. Memorials may be given to the Carroll County Humane Society; Heartland Pet Welfare, 2400 Wacker Road, Savanna, Illinois, 61074; or a church of the donor's choice. Dorothy was born on September 11, 1917, the daughter of Victor and Mattie (Palmer) Dauphin in Woodland Township. Dorothy graduated from the DeKalb State Teacher's College, with the Class of 1937.

Upon graduation from college, Dorothy taught in Carroll County rural schools for five years. She was also employed by the United States Air Force for twenty-two years. During her retirement years she worked for the Carroll County Sheriff and the Y.W.C.A. in Clinton. She was a previous member of the Savanna Bible Church and the Humane Society in Clinton. She enjoyed gardening, and caring for small animals.

Dorothy will be missed by one daughter, Sharon Thulen of Thomson, Illinois; a grandson, Clint (Mary) Thulen of Fenton, Illinois; two great-granddaughters; Stephanie and Erica ; one sister, Hazel (Harold) Brinkmeier of Mount Carroll, Illinois; two brothers, Palmer (Margaret) Dauphin of Mount Carroll, and Fred (Geraldine) Dauphin of Savanna; one sister in-law, Jean Dauphin of Freeport, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her former husband, Jack Malone; one sister, Lessetta Sietz; and three brothers, Victor, Paul and Ben.

Geraldine "Gerry" M. Johnson

Geraldine "Gerry" M. Johnson, age 76, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, March 06, 2008, at the FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held 2:00pm Sunday, March 9th, at the Mount Carroll Church of God with Pastor Rick Zickefoose officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 - 2:00pm Sunday prior to the Service at Church. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois, on Monday. Memorials may be directed to the family. Geraldine M. Putman was born September 30, 1931, in Camanche, Iowa, the daughter of Carl Raymond and Martha H. (Petersen) Putman. She attended school in Camanche. On August 22, 1947, Gerry married Lloyd W. Johnson at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa.

Gerry worked for twenty years at the Moose Lodge in Savanna and had also worked at the Church of God, Mt. Carroll. She enjoyed reading and working with puzzles. Gerry was an avid Chicago Cubs Fan. Most of all she loved and enjoyed her family.

Gerry will be dearly missed by a son, John (Ann) Johnson of Thomson; four daughters, Linda (Steve) Sippel of Thomson; Mary (Dick) Smith of Shannon, Connie (Butch) Lease of Savanna and Roxanne (David) Kness of Chadwick; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; a brother, Ron (Phyllis) Putman of Mt. Dora, Florida and a sister, Betty (Lauren) Mumm of Chandler, Arizona.

Gerry was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd, four brothers, three sisters, a daughter, and a grandson.

Lois Sherwood

Lois Sherwood, age 74, of Argo Fay, Illinois passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral Services are pending at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Thomson, Illinois.

Harry K. Hager

Harry K. Hager, age 94, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away on March 6, 2008, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Elizabeth, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday March 10, 2008 at 1:00pm at the Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover. Military Honor Guard will be provided by the Hanover VFW Post 5300. Harry was born on November 12, 1913 in Belle Rive, Illinois, to John and Alice (Wall) Hager. He grew up and attended grammar school in North Liberty, Iowa and went to High School in Iowa City. After high school, Harry worked as a hired hand on a farm until entering the U.S. Army. Harry was very proud to have served his country and was part of the second wave to hit Normandy, France, on D-Day. Harry then married Eunice Armstrong of Hanover, Illinois.

Harry owned and operated Hager's Saw Shop on 3rd Street in Dubuque, Iowa, until his retirement in the late 70's. After his wife's death in 1981, he attended the Blind School in Chicago. This gave him the freedom to live on his own and be able to take care of himself and to travel. Harry attended conventions for the blind all over the United States and also visited with family near and far. Harry was a member of the Hanover United Presbyterian Church, and prior to his going blind he loved to fly kites, make puzzles and tend to his garden. After his eyesight deteriorated, Harry loved to listen to audio books for the blind and collect various gadgets for the blind.

Harry is survived by his sisters-in-law Helen (the late Berdel) Hager of Walla Walla, Washington, and Margaret Armstrong of Hanover, Illinois; nephews Leroy Sexton of West Liberty, Iowa, and John (Cheri) Armstrong of Saucier, Mississippi; nieces Fae (John) Currado of Lancaster, California, Marjorie (Rod) Brand of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Linda (Forrest) Pratt of Hanover, Illinois; a very dear friend, Donna (Gary) Mullane of Hanover, Illinois, and many great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, and great great great nieces and nephews.

Harry is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eunice, his four sisters Nannie, Gertie, Nellie, and Laura, and his three brothers, Clarence, Berdel and Walter.

Joanne Ferris

Joanne Ferris, age 71, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Bluff Terrace Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois with Deacon Ray Hilgendorf, Mercy Medical Center Chaplain officiating. Burial will be in Spring Lake Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Joanne was born on November 12, 1936, the daughter of Loran and Helen (Jones) Winkel in Clinton, Iowa. Joanne graduated from Clinton High School, Class of 1954. She married Elmer "Gene" Ferris on March 23, 1958, in Clinton, Iowa.

Joanne worked as the receptionist for Dr. Simmons and Dr. Butler Optometric Center in Savanna for many years. She was a member of the Methodist Faith and the Navy Wife's Club. Joanne was an avid Timberlake Playhouse patron. She enjoyed watching ice-skating and movies. Most of all Joanne enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Joanne will be dearly missed by her husband, Elmer "Gene" Ferris of Bluff Terrace Nursing Home, Clinton, Iowa; a son, Mark Ferris of Chadwick, Illinois; a daughter, Terry (Arlyn) Dykema of Chadwick, Illinois; three grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Nancy) Winkel of Clinton, Iowa; two sisters, Vicki (Kenneth) White of Clinton, Iowa and Debbie (Ronald) Ponstler of Davenport, Iowa; an aunt, Marney Malone of Camanche, Iowa; and sister-in-law Cindy Winkel of Davenport, Iowa.

Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Joshua Dykema; one great grandson, James Michael Weires; one brother, Thomas Winkel and an aunt, Delores Winkel.
