The Chadwick Women’s Club is making dolls for Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a project of the International GFWC which provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe. Shown in the photo are members with some of the dolls which will give comfort to the children having the surgery.

Crop Production Research Update
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 27th to attend a Crop Production Update in Elizabeth sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension of Jo Daviess County. The workshop will be held at Highland Community College, West Campus (Elizabeth) from 2 – 4pm, and admission will be $5.00.

Local Chiropractor Supporting Cancer Research
Cornerstone Chiropractic & Rehabilitation is supporting St. Baldrick Foundation for research supporting children with cancer. If they raise enough money Cornerstone Chiropractic & Rehabilitation will participate in the St. Baldrick event in Dewitt Iowa on March 16th and Dr. Dinning, D.C. will shave his head. Along with this promotion, Cornerstone Chiropractic & Rehabilitation is running a new patient special for the next two weeks, and doing a patient appreciation day on the 15th. On that day patients will be seen for a donation to support cancer research.

Morrison Declares Flooding Emergency
In a press release received Monday morning, March 11, 2013, City Clerk Melanie T. Schroeder said the City of Morrison has declared a Flooding Emergency.
Volunteers are needed to help sandbag. If you know anyone interested in helping the efforts of the Public Works Department, please ask them to immediately contact City Hall at 815-772-7657. They will need their own rain gear, boots and a shovel, if available.
‘Meet the Candidates’ in Morrison
In anticipation of the upcoming April 9, 2013 elections, the Morrison Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will host a “Meet the Candidates” night on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Morrison Community Room, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL. The event will be moderated by Stephanie Vavra, of thecity1.com.
Invited candidates running for Morrison Mayor are Sarah Thorndike, R. Everett Pannier, Marti (Martha) Wood, and David J. Jindrich; for City Council are Ward 1: Dale Eizenga and Cheryl Bush; Ward 2: Harvey D. Zuidema and Nancy J. Riggen; Ward 3: Curt Bender and Vernon Tervelt; and Ward 4: David G. Helms and Ward 4 (2-year unexpired term) Scott Connelly.
For fairness, the same questions will be posed to each mayoral and each aldermanic candidate. No questions will be entertained from the audience and there will no debating between the candidates. This “Meet the Candidates Night” forum is meant to be just that, an opportunity for the electorate of Morrison to meet the candidates and hear their positions on relevant local issues.
Christ in the Passover
Christ in the Passover is a special event being hosted by the Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren to enhance our experience of Lent. It will be conducted by the organization Jews for Jesus. Area churches are invited to attend.
Jesus’ Last Supper was actually a Jewish Passover. Heather Drake of Jews for Jesus will re-create the traditional Passover service and explain how it foreshadowed Jesus’ death and resurrection in a presentation called “Christ in the Passover” here at Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren on March 19 at 6:30 pm.
Heather will set a table with items traditionally used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance. She will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration today.
Light refreshments will be served. An offering will be received to benefit the ministry of Jews for Jesus. Service of Communion will take place at the close of the evening services.

Chadwick Boosters On the Move
Spring is on the way and the Chadwick Boosters have been busy coordinating upcoming events. The Chadwick Community Boosters are a Chadwick based organization that work to maintain the Chadwick American Legion Hall and promote community events. We work to raise money to maintain and update the American Legion Hall building which is available for rental to the public. The Legion building is a wonderful place to host events as it has a full kitchen and plentiful seating. To schedule an event please call Barb Imel at 815-684-5216. This calendar year we have hosted a pancake breakfast and an omelet breakfast with the money raised going toward a new furnace recently installed in the Legion building. These events are scheduled to raise money as well as allow a time of fellowship.
Donations and money raised also go toward instilling a sense of community involvement in the future generations. The Boosters give two $100 scholarships each year to graduating seniors who have participated in community programs or events during their school years. Seniors who have not received information on the Chadwick Boosters scholarship through their school can call Nicole Shores at 815-718-2053 by March 30th for an application. Scholarship applications will be reviewed at the Booster meeting on April 8th.
March is a very busy time for us as we organize summer involvement and prepare for scholarship time. The Boosters are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day corned beef and cabbage lunch on Sun. March 17th from 11am – 2pm at the Chadwick Legion Hall. The next weekend will be the Chadwick Children’s Easter Egg Hunt at the Chadwick Jr. High School on March 30th at 10:00am. Everyone is invited to attend these events.
The Chadwick Community Boosters organization is open to anyone living in the Village of Chadwick. We would like to invite anyone interested to attend the Booster meetings which are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm at the American Legion Hall. Four Seasons Gardening Program Continues with Spring Series
The spring series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program gets underway in April. The first session of the series is Spruce Problems (Pest and Cultural Issues.)The program is offered at the Mt. Carroll and Morrison Extension Offices and the Plum Creek Arboretum in Dixon on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 1:00 pm.
Spruces generally are native to cooler regions and are adapted to cold conditions. They prefer full sun locations with acidic and well-drained soils. When exposed to unfavorable cultural or environmental conditions, spruce can become stressed and more susceptible to diseases and pests. This program will cover all the cultural, disease, insect, and spider mite problems that have been diagnosed at the University of Illinois Plant Clinic. The program features a color slide presentation accompanied by the voice of the instructor as people from throughout the state participate.
Other topics in the spring series include Pollinators and Insecticides, set for April 23, All About Tomatoes: Strategies for Controlling Common Pests and Disorders on May 7 and, Don’t Doubt the Drought on May 2.
Cost per session is $5 (free for active Master Gardeners). Webinars will be offered at 3 locations within the Unit, Carroll County Extension Office, Mt. Passport to the World Club will be held on Wednesday’s April 10, 17, 24, May 1, 8 and 15 at Naaman Diehl Auditorium in Mt. Carroll. The sessions will be from 4pm-5:30pm and are for anyone in grades 3-8. The fee for all six sessions is $15.

Historical Society Seeks Collections for Display
The Carroll County Historical Society is inviting local residents to display personal collections during 2013. Do you have a hobby collection? Are you a collector of items related to Carroll County? Do you possess items of historical interest? Have you been a collector for many years?
Are you willing to loan a portion of your collection for display at the Owen P. Miles Museum for 2-3 months? If so, please contact the Carroll County Historical Society, by March 31, at 815-244-3474, give your name, phone number, type of collection, and its connection to Carroll County. Collections will be accepted based on historical interest and display case space available. Displays will run March—May, June—August, and September—December.

John McConnel, Jr. shared his experiences doing disaster relief work in Red Bank, N.J., Joplin, Mo. & in Wiggins, Miss.
HIs slide presentation & talk was very interesting. Sec. Cynthia Woessner read the minutes from the Oct. meeting. Nancy Freeman, Treasurer gave a report & presented a budget for the year & it was approved. Arlene Bickelhaupt, Americanism Chairman had 5 interesting items that happened in history on March 1st. Wendy Klein, Chr. of the $500.00
Scholarship reported that info had been given to county schools. Jill Bess had info to pass out for Dan Rutherford, possible candidate for Il. Governor. Special guest was Dr. Lois Frels, Past State President of the Il. Fed. of Republican
Women. Next meeting will be April 26th.
‘Sing! It’s Spring!’ Concert
Freeport Choral Society will present its Lenten Concert entitled “Sing! It’s Spring!” on March 17th, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd., Freeport. Jim Davis of Freeport conducts the society choir as well as the Community Handbell Choir. Randy Cook will provide keyboard accompaniment, and Patty Weik will be on percussion.
A wide variety of songs are included in this concert. John Ness Beck’s “Canticle of Praise” and the spiritual “Wondrous Love” are in the sacred category. Popular songs on the program include Louis Prima’s “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “Here Comes the Sun” by Beatle George Harrison, and a medley from “The Music Man.” There is no admission, but an offering will be taken.

Recently, the St. Wendelin Knights of Columbus, Council #12841 held a Basketball Free Throw Competition at the Eastland Middle School in Shannon.
The winners that can go on to the Sectional Competition are: Age 10 — Lane Christians and Erin Henze; Age 11 — Kaden Henze and Kasey Sutherland; Age 12 — Austin Miller and Lindsey Spraklin; Age 13 — Grace Norton; Age 14 — Elijah Fogle and Hannah Kepel.
The competitors were from Davis, Lanark, Freeport, Rock City and Shannon. Congratulations!
