Ritchie Receives Tom H Kustes Memorial Scholarship

During the special awards segment of the West Carroll FFA Chapter’s parent & member banquet held March 11, John Kustes announced that Jacob Ritchie will receive the $1,000 Tom H. Kustes Memorial Scholarship. The winner was selected from senior applicants who intend to prepare for an agricultural career at a vocational-technical school, junior college, college or university upon high school graduation.
Ritchie intends to attend either Stockton or MTI Welding School in the fall. Jacob is the son Ruth and Mike Ritchie of of Mt. Carroll.
In addition to the monetary award, Jacob will receive a personal recognition plaque, and his name will be inscribed on a special achievement plaque on display at the school. The scholarship was made possible by a 2005 gift to the school district in memory of Mr. Kustes, who was a lifelong livestock/grain farmer in the Thomson area before his death in 2004. He graduated in 1936 from York Community High School in Thomson, and held an honorary Chapter Farmer Degree from the Thomson FFA chapter in recognition of his support of chapter activities. Tom’s wife, Gladys, was an elementary education teacher for over twenty years in the former Thomson school district. Qualifying senior students are encouraged to apply each spring to the West Carroll FFA Chapter advisor for this scholarship.
West Carroll FFA Holds 8th Annual Chapter Banquet

The West Carroll FFA Chapter held their 8th Annual Parent-Member Banquet on March 11, 2013. Chapter President, Clare O’Connor, opened the banquet with a greeting to the approximately 180 members and guests. FFA Advisor, Mr. Mathey, gave the invocation. A meal consisting of pulled pork, baked beans, salads, green beans, corn and scallop potatoes followed by dessert was enjoyed by all in attendance.
Numerous team and individual awards were given at the banquet. West Carroll FFA CDE teams receiving first in Section #1 FFA competition included the Trapshooting Team, Crop Judging team, Greenhand Parliamentary Team, Greenhand Quiz Bowl Team, Dairy Judging Team and Varsity Parliamentary Team. Forty-four FFA Greenhands were initiated into the West Carroll FFA chapter, and Brianna Kampmeier was awarded the Star FFA Greenhand of 2013. Chapter FFA Degrees were presented to 27 members. O’Connor and the 2012-2013 chapter officer team then recognized all of the Chapter FFA Proficiency award winners.
For special awards, FFA Advisor, Mr. Mathey presented the Chapter’s Honorary FFA Degree to Donald Metz. Mr. Hartman awarded Janelle Dykstra the Outstanding Senior Achievement Award. John Kustes awarded Jacob Ritchie the $1000 Tom Kustes FFA Memorial Scholarship. Retiring addresses were given by Secretary, Janelle Dykstra; Reporter, Kaylee Vos; and Sentinel, Jacob Ritchie. The 2013-2014 West Carroll FFA officer team was also installed: President, Dylan Williams; Vice-President, Clare O’Connor; Secretary, Katessa Sibley; Reporter, Christy Ralston; Treasurer, Chloe Carson; and Sentinel, Demi Hess.

The West Carroll FFA would like to thank all individuals who donated to the Illinois FFA Foundation this past year and the people who helped in planting and harvesting the FFA plot.
West Carroll FFA Parliamentary Teams Advance to State Contests
The West Carroll FFA Greenhand and Varsity Parliamentary Procedure Teams each will advance to the State Parliamentary Procedure CDE’s by placing 1st and 2nd respectively at the District I FFA Parliamentary Procedure CDE held on March 7 at Blackhawk East College near Kewanee.
Individually for the West Carroll Varsity team, Chloe Carson placed 3rd as chairman while Christy Ralston placed 3rd as secretary. West Carroll member, Quinn Rumler placed 5th individually as a floor member.
Individually for the West Carroll Greenhand team, Brianna Kampmeier placed 1st as chairman and Cassie Johnson 1st as secretary. Quinn Rumler placed 1stas a floor member.
A Parliamentary Procedure Contest consists of members completing a 25 question multiple choice test, doing a 10 minute demonstration using parliamentary motions, and answering questions about the motions used in the demonstration.
