IHSA Board approves performance-enhancing drug penalties
The Illinois High School Association's Board of Directors at its monthly meeting Saturday (Mar. 15) in Peoria approved
the penalty to be applied to a student who tests positive for performance-enhancing drugs. The student would be ineligible for 365 days from the date the
test results were reported to the student and the school. The student may then
apply for reinstatement of athletic eligibility after 90 calendar days, following the successful completion of an approved educational program and
a negative test for performance-enhancing drugs.
The Board determined that any team penalties would be determined by the Executive Director on a case-by-case basis under the provisions of
Article 1.460 of the IHSA Constitution.
The Board also approved the National Center for Drug Free Sport to provide testing services when the program is implemented in the 2008-09
school term, and approved the language of the random testing consent form that each student and his/her guardian will be required to sign to maintain
athletic eligibility.
"We are pleased with the action taken by the Board in regards to our drug testing program," said IHSA Assistant Executive Director Kurt Gibson.
"Our Sports Medicine Advisory Committee believes the experience Drug Free Sport has with athletic drug testing will be invaluable in the
implementation our program, and we're excited to have an opportunity to work with them. Our committee felt that their experience, expertise, and commitment
to education on the use of performance-enhancing substances were the best match for the needs of our program."
Sauk Valley baseball team enters season with high hopes
The Sauk Valley baseball team features a strong roster of 31 players. Twenty Baseball Skyhawks are freshmen. The Sauk Valley
baseball team features 11 returning sophomores. The squad includes a pitching staff of nine that features seven right-handers and two left-handers. The pitching
staff has the experience of only four returning sophomores who will be starters. Assistant Coach Mitch McCoy says he will have a dual focus of having
pitchers have quality starts and throw a lof of strikes.
Defensively, Sauk Valley has 12 players to take care of business on the infield while seven all-new freshmen will rotate patrolling the outfield.
Head Coach Rene Valdez says his philosophy of team unity is especially important with a roster that has more freshmen than experienced sophomores.
"We're using a slightly new system and it will take these younger players time to learn that system," Valdez said.
Valdez says that while this is a young team, it has two things going for it. The first is depth in most all areas. The second is the experience of the
coaching staff that brings with each of them a winning tradition. In addition to Valdez, he is backed up by assistant coaches Brandon Good, Nick Miller,
Mitch McCoy. All have played on Sauk teams that won conference and/or sectional crowns.
At the plate, Sauk Valley will have many of the same powerhouse hitters from last season. Valdez expects to see the same leaders be a big part of
the Skyhawk batting order.
This season's Sauk Valley baseball schedule includes a new doubleheader to Southeastern and the Skyhawks will also play Dakota Technical
College, a team from Minnesota.
College Softball: Skyhawks begin play
This season, the Sauk Valley Community College softball team has 20 student-athletes that are committed to having a successful
softball season.
This is the largest player roster Sauk Valley has had for the softball team.
The Skyhawks have a good chance of winning the Conference and breaking the season win record of 20.
Sauk Valley is 2-6 through its first eight games. The Skyhawks won a pair of games in Oklahoma as part of the Broken Arrow Tournament.
Once again the Skyhawks played a competitive fall practice schedule. The players have been a spirited and competitive softball team with
competition for all positions.
The 2007-08 team returned All-Region, All-Conference third baseman Jennifer Lillie (Byron). The infield is made up of pitchers Danielle Henry
and Lynsey Young. Kristen Smith, Cayla Gridley, Sarah Christopher, Jessica Ellis and Amber Winekauf (Polo) are at first base. Lauren Metzler and
Lindsay Meurer will be at second base with Lindsey Coward at shortstop and Lindsey Tabor at third base. Breanne Knowles, Kayla Grennan, and Jodi
Medendorp will work behind the plate, and Paige Peugh, Rachel Donnelly, Morgan Byrd, Alicia Spangler, and Erin O' Connell will patrol the outfield.
