Synopsis of the Chadwick-Milledgeville
C.U.S.D. #399 Board of Education Meeting
The Board met March 18, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the Milledgeville High School Library.
The agenda was approved with addition under Old Business Item C. Review and discussion of possible Life Safety projects. The Consent agenda items were all approved.
During Public Comments, the Board read the Thank you received from Mrs. Cathy Schopf; Thank you to Walter Donahue for his donation of $100 to the football program;
Thank you from Mrs. Karen Wilhelms, Eastland School Nurse, for use of our vision screening equipment.
Approved amended 2012-13 Public School Calendar: Superintendent Tim Schurman reported that the District has incurred three full snow days and three interrupted days thus far this school year. The State requires schools to amend their current calendars to reflect the use of emergency days and provide explanation for the interrupted days and that is why we need to approve this amended final calendar.
Amended the 2013-14 Public School Calendar: Superintendent Schurman reported that staff members expressed concerns about having Parent Teacher Conferences on Halloween evening. In order to resolve the conflict we will conduct Parent Teacher Conferences one week earlier.
Discussed possible Fire Life Safety Projects to be included on the Ten Year Life Safety Survey: Superintendent Schurman proposed a list of possible projects to be included on the Ten Year Life Safety Survey which will be officially approved in June 2013. Board members provided feedback on what projects they felt should be included.
Approved Renewal of Membership in the Illinois High School Association for the 2013-14 School Year.
Reviewed winter sports gate receipts: Superintendent Schurman reported that winter sports gate receipts totaled $9,404.55 which is down $1,188.96 from last year.
Approve lease agreement with Bi-County of one classroom in the Chadwick building for the 2013-14 school year: Superintendent Schurman reported that we lease the old Chadwick Kindergarten room to the Bi-County Coop for the at-risk preschool program.
Report on annual ROE building inspection conducted February 15, 2013: Superintendent Schurman reported that the inspections went very well and that the only violation sited in the inspection report was that the stage curtains in each school need to be treated with fire retardant by a certified company. District custodial staff treated the curtains four years ago but that does not meet code because it needs to be done by certified professionals. A company has been contracted to apply the fire retardant and tag the curtains with a certificate of completion.
Approved lease-purchase of two buses and trade in of two buses: Superintendent Schurman recommending that we lease purchase two Thomas buses from Midwest Bus Sales, Inc, Princeton, Illinois.
Approved renewal of Student Accident Insurance with Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company: Resolution to approve Sterling School District’s request to withdraw from the Bi-County Special Education Cooperative effective July 1, 2014. Superintendent Schurman reported that it is disappointing that Sterling School District feels compelled to withdraw due to finances but to disapprove would only delay the opportunity to begin reorganizing the cooperative.
Voted to go into closed session at 8:10 P.M.; exited closed session at 9:00 P.M.
Motions out of Closed Session: Hired Mrs. Jody Mertz of Chadwick as District Secretary; Hired Mrs. Charlotte Frank as Title I Instructor at Milledgeville Elementary; Approved new five year contract for Superintendent Schurman through June 30, 2018. Mr. Schurman will receive a 2% raise each of the five years of the contract; Upheld suspensions.
Report on Educational and Legislative issues; Superintendent Schurman reported that the news from Springfield continues to be dismal and that the next year will be trying times for education in Illinois. He also noted the number of bills proposed by lawmakers that are unfunded mandates.
Legal issues update: Superintendent noted that the Office of Civil Rights advises that students with disabilities must be provided accommodations during tryouts for athletic teams.
Carroll County Early Step Pre-K Consortium Report: Pre-school screening for next school year has begun and will take place in our District April 4th and 5th at Chadwick Lutheran Church.
State Library Grant: Superintendent Schurman reported that the district received $735.50 this year from the Secretary of State’s office.
Reviewed Carroll County Sex Offender list.
Principal Rademacher reported that ten students were inducted into the National Honor Society on March 7, 2013. She also reported that the 1:1 computer initiative at the high school is on track for implementation at the high school next year.
March 15 Half-day SIP Teacher Institute. Superintendent Schurman reported that staff worked on Common Core Alignment and Quarterly Objectives. ISAT testing was completed at both schools March 4-15. Superintendent Schurman reported that testing went well and that there were no problems. March 8 was the end of the 3rd Quarter.
March 22 JH Quarterly Event will be held. Grade 4-8 students who qualify will enjoy an afternoon at White Pines Roller Rink near Oregon. Spring Break March 23-April 1
