Marjorie M. Ruch

Marjorie M. Ruch, 90 yrs old, of Lanark passed away on Sunday, March 27, 2011 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Il.

She was born April 7, 1920 in Chicago, the daughter of William E. and Alice (Upton) Scanlan.

On Oct. 7, 1939 she married George L. Ruch in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1986. She married Paul Fowler who also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Marjorie (Dr. Stephen) Dodge of New Smyrna Beach, FL., Pamela (James) Helgerson of Berwyn, Il. , one son Robert (Amy) Ruch of Lanark, Il. , one daughter-in-law, Sharon Ruch of Laport, CO., her grandchildren, Rebecca Gallie, Shannon Czyzewski, Erin Czyzewski, Jon Dodge, Jeff Dodge, Adam Ruch, Louisa Ruch, and Anna Ruch, three great grandchildren, Katie, Bethany, and Noa.

Preceding her in death were her parents, one son, George T. Ruch, one brother and three sisters.

A Memorial Gathering to celebrate her life will be held on Sat. Apr. 2, 2011 from one to four p.m. at her granddaughter Louisa Mahoney’s home at 233 S. Ridgeland in Oak Park, Il. A Memorial has been established in her memory for the Carroll Country Pitter Patter Pantry

Margie S. Shafer, 88, died peacefully Tuesday morning, March 22, 2011. She resided at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll.

She was born April 6, 1922 in Carroll County, a daughter of John and Lillian (Martz) Buntjer.

Religion was very important to her. She was a devoted member of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was baptized in 1956.

She lived in rural Lanark, Illinois all her life with her loving husband, Earl, and they retired from farming in 1978, moving to town. She loved gardening and was known for her beautiful flower gardens along Broad Street. Fishing also was a big part of her life, taking many trips to Wisconsin and Canada with the family.

She is survived by her children: Eldon (Cindy) Shafer of Poplar Grove, IL; Dawn Bitner of Lanark; sister, Betty Reinders of Dixon, IL; her brothers, John (Shirley) Buntjer of Lyndon, IL; Lee (Linda) Buntjer of Brandenton, FL; 5 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl in 2004; son Ronald in 2005; son-in-law Skip (Gerald Bitner) in 2009; and a brother in law, Wilbur Reinders.

The services will be at 4:00pm on Sunday, April 3, 2011 with visitation from 2:00 to time of service at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark.

Verna Mae Queckboerner

Verna Mae Queckboerner, age 83, of Chadwick, Illinois, formerly of Lanark, Illinois passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 in Chadwick. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Lanark United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in the Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll, Illinois. A memorial fund has been established in Mae’s honor and contributions may be given at visitation or sent to 35 Wilson Ave, Chadwick, IL 61014. Mae was born March 21, 1928, the daughter of Emil and Esther (Linn) Shimic in Guide Rock, Nebraska. She attended Guide Rock schools, received her teaching certificate and went on to teach first through eighth grade in the Guide Rock School System. One of Mae’s students was her youngest sister, Shirley. Mae’s artistic abilities developed throughout school where she played the violin, wrote poetry, began drawing and experimenting with different painting styles.

In her desire to explore beyond the borders of Guide Rock, Nebraska, Mae traveled to Illinois to visit her older sister. There she met and married John Shippee from Lena, Illinois and had three children, Paula Sue, Larry Wayne and Wendy Lou. Baby Wendy lost her fight for life two days after birth. In 1953, the family relocated to Lanark, where Mae raised her children and continued to call Lanark her home for the next twenty-five years. While raising her children, Mae continued to show her artistic side in the form of occasional poems, short stories and drawings. Mae married Albert Champion in 1963, he passed away in 1971. Through the matchmaking efforts of a mutual friend, Mae met Donald W. Queckboerner on a blind date, they married on July 15, 1978. They spent the next ten years farming outside of Chadwick, retiring in 1988 and moving to Chadwick.

When all of her children were on their own, Mae dedicated more time to her love for painting. Mae developed into a highly respected artist throughout the local area and completed a large number of oil paintings, many of which were purchased by local area residents. Mae was a member of Lanark United Methodist Church. She loved and enjoyed life, family and her many friends.

Mae is survived by her daughter, Paula Shippee of Baltimore, Maryland; son, Larry (Avra) Shippee of LaGrange, Illinois; three stepsons, David (Linda) Queckboerner, Douglas Queckboerner, Steven (Holly) Queckboerner; one step-daughter, Sue Ellen (Larry) Boelkins, all of Chadwick; fourteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four sisters, Alice Henry of Freeport, Illinois, Jean Shippee of McConnell, Illinois, Marie Hulsebusch of Branson, Missouri and Shirley Miller of Wildwood, California.

Mae was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Champion and Donald Queckboerner; an infant daughter, Wendy Shippee and one sister, Elsie Shimic.

Thelma D. Bach

Thelma D. Bach, age 88 of Belvidere, Illinois formerly of Savanna, Illinois, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at O.S.F. St Anthony Medical Center Rockford, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will take place in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. A visitation will be held from 12:00 Noon until the time of the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for an Indian reservation out west or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Thelma’s memory
