Thunder Lose To Cardinals

The West Carroll Thunder baseball team fell behind early but rallied with a huge fourth inning before falling to Stillman Valley 11-10. The Thunder put up a single run in the top of the third and then exploded for eight runs in the fourth to take a nine to four lead.

The Cardinals came back to score six runs in the bottom of the fifth and the Thunder countered with a run in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score and ten runs apiece. Stillman Valeey managed to push a run across in the bottom of the final inning to take the victory.

Tyler Brashaw took the pitching loss for West Carroll, going two and a third innings and giving up seven runs on four hits with four walks. Nick Hughes had a pair of singles for West Carroll with two runs batted in. Teammate Joey Sullivan added a single, double and two RBI’s and Tyler Jones knocked in three with a single and double.

Thunder coach Brian Kamper said, “Another game against a real good Stillman team. I am very disappointed in the outcome of this game. A baserunner interference call in the bottom of the seventh did not go our way, which took away the out that would have gotten us out of the inning. Instead the next batter had the game winning hit. I am happy with our play. Our defense stepped up and minus a couple mental lapses we played a good game.”

Lady Cougars Top Freeport Aquin

After dropping their opening game against Morrison, the Eastland Lady Cougars got on the winning track with a pair of wins. They shut out South Beloit 6-0 on March 19th for their first victory of the young season and continued their winning way by topping the Lady Bulldogs on Monday 4-0.

Eastland used a stellar pitching performance by sophomore hurler Hailey Miller and timely hitting to gain the victory. The Lady Cougars jumped out to the 2-0 lead by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third inning and that would prove to be enough as Aquin couldn’t capitilize on their scoring opportunities.

The Lady Cougars pushed across single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make the final margin of victory. Miller went five and a third innings on the hill, giving up just one hit while walking five and striking out seven Aquin hitters. Marissa Harris picked up the save, striking out the last five batters of the game. Harris also went two for four at the plate Teammate Hannah Shellhause also went two for four with a pair of runs batted in. Freeport Aquin’s Ellen Brunner took the pitching loss, going six innings and striking out four Eastland batters.

Lady Thunder Gain Their Second Win

West Carroll wasted little time getting on the scoreboard on Monday as they cruised to the 7-3 win over Oregon. The Lady Thunder put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Oregon came back with a run in the top of the third and West Carroll countered with another run in the bottom of the inning to take the three to one lead.

The Lady Hawks tied the score with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth but the Lady Thunder came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead back. West Carroll added another two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away and secure the win.

West Carroll’s Kim Durward picked up her second pitching victory of the season, going seven innings and allowing seven hits while walking three and fanning four Oregon hitters. At the plate, the Lady Thunders Kaiti Mathey knocked in three runs and Dana McCombie added two runs batted in.

Lady Thunder coach Don Mathey said of his squad’s performance, “Our ability to execute offensively was very good tonight. We came through with some big hits when we needed them. We also had great pitching and defense again tonight. Another great team victory.”

West Carroll Falls To Forreston/Polo

The West Carroll Lady Thunder battled it out with Forreston/Polo on Saturday before falling to them 10-9 in eight innings. West Carroll jumped out to the one to nothing lead only to have Forreston/Polo score five runs in the first two frames. The Lady Thunder had runs cross the plate in the first four innings to knot the game at five runs apiece going into the fifth inning. West Carroll plated two runs in the top of the sixth to take a seven to five lead only to have Forreston/Polo come back with three runs in their half of the inning to take the lead back eight to seven.
