Thunder Drop Cougars

The Eastland Cougars traveled to Thomson on Tuesday and the host West Carroll Thunder sent them home unhappy after taking the 2-1 victory. A pitching duel between West Carroll’s Matt LaShelle and Eastland’s Jordan Blair was the story as both pitchers hurled good games with the Thunder hitters coming through.

LaShelle went the distance on the mound for the Thunder, allowing one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out nine Cougar hitters.

Blair was equally impressive on the hill, as he allowed just two runs on six hits, walking two and fanning seven Thunder hitters. Zach Whitebread had two base hits for West Carroll, with teammate Trey Enloe adding a double.

Thunder coach Kamper said of the win, “A very big win for us. The boys were up for the game. Matt LaShelle pitched a very solid game for the win. We didn’t play our best ball as we left seven runners on base and still beat a good team. Hopefully, we stay focused and continue to play well.”

Winnebago Tops West Carroll

West Carroll’s bats fell silent on Thursday in Thomson as Winnebago pounded out a dozen hits enroute to the 17-0 win. The Indians put up six second innings runs and that would prove to be more than enough as the Thunder were limited to two hits in the game. Both West Carroll hits were Austin Weller singles.

Starting West Carroll pitcher Evan Williams took the loss, going only an inning and a third, allowing six runs on five hits. Winnebago was also aided by four Thunder miscues in the field.

Thunder head coach Brian Kamper said of his team’s performance, “We just came into this game unfocused After our last game, we got too over confident, had a poor practice last night and got beat in every aspect of the game tonight. We need some players to step up and be leaders and look to compete in every game whether we are up or down. I could tell after we were down six to nothing that we had ourselves beaten.”

Harrington To Play Baseball At Ave Maria

Pearl City senior Joey Harrington has been offered a full scholarship to attend Ave Maria University in Florida to play baseball in the Sun Conference. Joey is looking forward to playing for Coach Shawn Summe and the Gyrenes after his official visit to the campus in December.

The Sun Conference has been one of the most successful NAIA Division II conferences in the country. The conference features teams from Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

Joey has played the last three seasons for Pearl City and has received All-Conference recognition all three years. He was a unanimous choice last year as a junior. Joey also proved himself through out the region as he was selected second team all-area his sophomore year and first team last year. Joey has also played on the Lena Legion team since he was a freshman.

The Wolves were looking for big things this year from Joey after he led the team last year with a .553 batting average. Unfortunately, Joey is not able to play this season because of a shoulder injury he received earlier in the year that needed to be repaired surgically. Joey was a leader for the Wolves with a career batting average of .420 with four home runs.
