Synopsis of the Chadwick-Milledgeville CUSD #399 School Board Meeting
On April 15, the Chadwick-Milledgeville School Board conducted its regular meeting in the Milledgeville High School Library. Kim Gebhardt was absent. Approval of the Consent Agenda included Approval of Minutes from March 18, 2013 Regular & Closed Session Minutes, Payment of Bills for April, Treasurer's Report for March, Hot Lunch Report for March, and Student Activity Fund Account Summary for March, 2013.
During comments from the public, the Board heard a Thank you and congratulations letter to Mr. Keith Mayne for his efforts regarding the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. The students raised $7,203.25 this year, which is a record for our school! Thank you from Mrs. Jill Hesse and Mrs. Barb Peugh were also read.
Under Old Business, the Board discussed the selection process for National Honor Society. Principal Rademacher provided a synopsis of how students qualify and are selected for National Honor Society. She emphasized that just because you qualify academically does not mean you will be selected.
The Board approved continuing our agreement with West Carroll School District to share the cost of a high school science teacher. Superintendent Schurman noted that the cost sharing agreement worked very well this past year. In addition, he noted that Principal Bob Lamb of West Carroll High School and Principal Paula Rademacher of Milledgeville High School will work together to interview and hire a science teacher for next year.
The board approved a special meeting for Monday, April 29, 2013 at 7:30 P.M. in the Milledgeville High School Library, in order to seat the new board.
In New Business, the Board approved the 2013 Summer School Program June 3 through June 27, 2013. The summer school teachers will be Shelly Parks, Robin Palmer, Jody Engelkens, and Kathy Skoog. Superintendent Schurman noted that he was very pleased to have the same group of teachers back again this year! In addition, he noted that we will run the same schedule as in past years and provide shuttle transportation between buildings.
Approved of shared transportation agreements with Eastland District #308 for the 2013-14 School Year. Superintendent Schurman noted that the transportation sharing between the two districts continues to be a tremendous success. It has also resulted in a significant cost savings to both districts.
During the first reading of PRESS Board Policy Update Issue #81, Superintendent Schurman noted that this is the first reading, and therefore we are just reviewing the policy modifications at this time. Mr. Schurman noted that the following policy changes are highlighted in this update: policy on students bringing their own technology to school; use of technology/electronic devices; student records procedure; identity protection; bus procedures; waiver of student fees; criminal offender notification laws; tobacco free workplace; changes to community use of facilities; and parent involvement.
The Board then voted to enter into closed session at 7:40 P.M. to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee . . . to determine its validity.
Voted to come out of closed session at 8:28 P.M. During motions out of closed session, the Board approved the following Reduction-In-Force:
AnnEtta Young, Chadwick Library Aide at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Deb Herin, Elementary Special Education Aide at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Deloris Stiles, Elementary Special Education Aide at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Matt Koster, Junior High Special Education Aide at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
Jenny Merema, High School Special Education Aide at the end of the 2012-13 school year.
During Administrative Business, Senior Scholarship Night was announced for 7:00 P.M.
Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milledgeville.
Superintendent Schurman announced the dates of the IASB Convention in Chicago – November 22-24, 2013.
Superintendent Schurman announced that IASB Resolution Proposal forms are due June 29, 2013.
Report on Educational and Legislative Issues
Superintendent Schurman reported that the legislature has made little progress on the budget or pension reform thus far in the legislative session. He also reported that he has met with local legislators twice in the past month and urged them to restore general state aid and transportation funding.
Principal Rademacher reported that planning for the 1:1 computer initiative at the high school next year is going well. She also reported that new handbook and board policy rules will have to be approved in advance of next school year regarding lap top use and care. Finally she reported that the High School PSAE Reward trip to a Cubs game Thursday, April 11, 2013 went very well and that the students were well behaved.
JH Track has started and we have 42 students participating. Mr. Schurman will attend the Superintendent/School Business Official Conference May 14-16, 2013.
Staff Appreciation Dinner will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2013.
Superintendent Schurman was re-elected IASA NW Region President for a second term at the IASA Northwest Region meeting held April 3, 2013 in Freeport.
The 2013 WIU Arnold W. Salisbury Educational Leadership Award was awarded to Superintendent Schurman. “It is a great honor to receive this award and much of the credit goes to the outstanding staff I work with every day. Chadwick-Milledgeville is a superb district and I am fortunate to be associated with such a high quality school district.”
