Gretchen Marie (Weber) Smith, age 72, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mt. Carroll. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church, Mt. Carroll with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be given in Gretchen’s honor for SS. Gretchen was born May 22, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Leon and Marguerite (Schallau) Weber. She is a 1956 graduate of Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Cedar Rapids, where she served as the 1956 Homecoming Queen. She then attended Mt. Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids and the University of Iowa, Iowa City. In 1960, Gretchen moved to Denver, Colorado where she met “the love of her life” and husband, Judson Smith. They were married February 19, 1966 in Cedar Rapids. In 1967, a daughter, Kristen Ann, was born, and in 1968, they gave birth to a son, Kent David.

Gretchen dearly loved her family and her friends. She was employed for 23 years as a teacher’s aid in the Chadwick school system and still maintained contact with some of her students to this day. It was always easy to take time for a coffee break “with the girls.” She enjoyed teaching CCD classes, reading novels and poetry, and traveling with her family. Cooking and reading cook books was a passion. She loved trying new recipes on her family. Gretchen was a member of SS. John & Catherine Catholic Church of Mt. Carroll.

She will be dearly missed by her husband, Judson Smith of Mt. Carroll; her daughter, Kristen Smith (Brian Drye) of Winthrop, Washington; her son, Kent Smith of Denver, Co.; and brother John (Mary Jo) Weber of Hazelton, IA. Gretchen is preceded in death by her parents.

Arlowe Kenneth Daehler, age 92, of Chadwick, Illinois died on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chadwick with Reverend Charles Steinke officiating. Burial will take place in Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick. A visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m., one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Arlowe’s memory. Condolences and tributes may be left for the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com

Arlowe was born on September 24, 1918, the son of Herman W. and Louisa (Strauch) Daehler in Chadwick. He was baptized on November 2, 1918 at home by a minister who happened to be going past the home (in horse and buggy) on his way to Fair Haven Church. He attended Fair Haven Center and graduated from Chadwick High School with the Class of 1936. Arlowe helped his father on the farm until 1941 when he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He served with the 132nd Infantry until 1945. He spent three years in the South Pacific, including the battle of Guadalcanal. After his discharge he returned home assisting with the family farm.

Arlowe married Hazel Delores Lepien on June 11, 1950. They settled on the family farm and retired from farming in 1982. They moved to the village of Chadwick in 1996. Arlowe was a life-long member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served twenty-years on the church council, was head usher and treasurer of Sunday school and the church. He was a member of the American Legion Post# 739 and served as Commander while the Legion Hall was being constructed in Chadwick. Arlowe was also a member of the Farm Bureau, served on the school board for seven years and was a Fair Haven Township trustee for twenty-three years. He enjoyed fixing things, visiting and was an avid reader. Arlowe never lost his interest in farming; always asking how the crops were doing.

Arlowe is survived by his wife, Hazel; a son, John Daehler of Lanark, Illinois; a daughter, Ruth (Matt) Siemert of Morrison, Illinois; son in-law, David Merchant of Lanark; one sister, Eileene (William) Butler of Fredericksburg, Maryland; two granddaughters, Lynn Siemert of Denver, Colorado and Jessica Merchant of Wheaton, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

Arlowe was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sara; four brothers, Ellwood, Lyle, Leon and Donovan.

Jean S. Bowden

Jean S. Bowden, age 80, of Clinton, Iowa, formerly of Savanna, Illinois, died Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at home. Cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Savanna Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Savanna VFW or the Clinton Humane Society.

Marvin Tegeler

Marvin Tegeler, 89, of Sterling, Illinois died at his daughter’s home in Sterling on May 5th, 2011. Visitation will be held 9:30 a.m until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 10 at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Stel, Assoc. pastor of Ebenezer Reformed Church, officiating. A memorial fund has been established in his memory.

Bernie Hook

Bernie Hook, age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, died Friday, January 14, 2011, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna. Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 14, 2011 in the Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois.
