Dale E. Klein

Dale E. Klein, age 69, of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at home with his loving family by his side. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 14, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna with Reverend Michael Wey officiating. Burial will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Law Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, and one hour prior to the service at the Church. Memorials may be made in Dale’s honor to Mercy Hospice, Clinton, Iowa or the MDS Foundation www.mdsfoundation.org as a Tribute to Dr. Aggarwal and his staff. Dale was born on July 24, 1940 in Savanna, the son of William “Bill” and Mabel (Berry) Klein. He is a 1958 graduate of the Savanna High School. Dale began dating Wendy Hart in 1975. They were married on December 9, 1988. Dale and Wendy have spent thirty-five wonderful years together.

Dale spent many years working as a Meat Cutter, starting at the Savanna Locker Plant. He also worked as a Toll Taker for the Savanna-Sabula Bridge and the Fulton-Clinton Bridge. Later, Dale worked as an Inspector for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture/Meat and Poultry Division, retiring as a Regional Administrator. Dale loved traveling with his wife, Wendy, and their dog, “Britney.” He enjoyed fishing the Mississippi River with his “best-buddy,” Terry Kane.

Dale is survived by his wife, Wendy; his son, Chris Klein of Savanna; his daughter, Stacy (Felipe) Klein Valdivia of Savanna; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Riyeff of Madison, WI, Ana Maria (Florentino) Rodriguez of Madison, WI, Jason Klein of Janesville, WI and Felipe Dale Valdivia of Savanna; one brother, Larry (Judy) Klein of Savanna; and one sister, Shirley (Martin) Stoddard of Savanna. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald “Peewee” and Walter “Red” Klein.

D. Richard Schaffner, age 82, of Chadwick, Illinois, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll with full Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 10:00– 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. Masonic Rites will be conducted immediately following the visitation. Memorials may be directed to Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick or the Cyrus Lodge #188, Mt. Carroll in Richard’s honor. Richard was born August 11, 1927 the son of Henry and Mildred (Clark) Schaffner in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Boylan School a one-room school in Peoria County, Illinois. In 1944 Richard left Chillicothe Township High School to join the United States Navy. He was stationed at the U.S.N., Ammunition Depot in Hastings, Nebraska where he tested rockets. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to the family farm and drove trucks until he was able to rent a farm. On September 10, 1961 Richard married Marianne Dentino at the Mossville United Methodist Church, Mossville, Illinois. In 1969 he moved his family to Mt. Carroll where he continued to farm the Donald L. Schielein farm in Salem Township for thirty-eight years. Upon moving to Carroll County he was dubbed “Soy Bean King” by the late, Dutch Cook. In 2001 he moved to Chadwick with his wife but continued to farm. He took great pride in his farming operation especially keeping everything mowed.

Richard was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick; a past Master of Cyrus Masonic Lodge #188; a member of Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Freeport and he served several years as an ASC committeeman in Salem Township, Illinois. Most important to Richard was his family; he loved time spent with them, especially the grandchildren.

Richard will be dearly missed by his wife, Marianne of Chadwick; two sons, Michael (Carol) Schaffner of Sumner, Iowa and Matthew (Roxanne) Schaffner of Mt.Carroll; two daughters, Jananne (Steve Fritz) Schaffner of Freeport, Illinois and Jody (Mark) Swiech of Leavenworth, Kansas; eleven grandchildren, Travis, Tyler and Meredith Schaffner, Daniel, Aimee and Allison Prehn, Carly and Marti Jean Schaffner, Dylan and Cooper Ivan and Lily Sweich; one great-grandson, Connor Shoemaker and two step-grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Sweich, one step-great-grandson, Kayden Azucar; one brother, Verne (Jean) Schaffner of Chillicothe, Illinois; five sisters, Jean Gauwitz, Dorothy (Bob) Smith and Janet Schaffner, all of Chillicothe, Norma McWilliams of Peoria and Marge (Bob) Dell of Princeville, Illinois. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Martin Lee in 1991 and one brother, Walter Schaffner.

Gerald “Jerry” Parker

Gerald Francis “Jerry” Parker, age 62, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, May 10, 2010 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna with Father Dennis Atto as Celebrant. Burial will take place in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in his memory.

Wayne B. Meyer

Wayne B. Meyer, age 79, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at his home in Elizabeth. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover, Illinois with Father Noel Jacob as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Law–Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth with a rosary service being held at 6:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in Wayne’s name.

Brooke Lynn Kessler

Brooke Lynn Kessler, age 34 of Savanna, Illinois, formerly of Sterling, Illinois died on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at her mother’s home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 8, 2010 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Savanna. A memorial gathering will be held from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in Brooke’s memory.
