Kenneth “Kenny” E. Kniss

Kenneth “Kenny” E. Kniss, 84, of Lanark died Sunday May 17, 2009 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Mt. Carroll.

Kenneth was born on Sept. 14, 1924 in Savanna, a son of Arthur and Kathryn (Wingerd) Kniss. He attended Carroll County country schools, and was a 1942 graduate of Lanark High School. On July 21, 1946, Kenneth married June Martin at the First Brethren Church in Lanark.

Kenneth was a member of the Lanark Church of The Brethren where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years, served on the Lanark School Board for two terms, served on the Board of the Carroll Service Co., was a Freedom Township Supervisor, on the Carroll County Board, and was a member of the Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, six children; Ronald Kniss of Lake Forest, IL, Barry (Barb) Kniss of Mt. Carroll, Tom Kniss (Sandra Cahill) of Lake Carroll, Mary Lou Kniss of Charlotte, N.C., Jonathan (Laura) Kniss of Tacoma, WA, Carolee (Kevin) Stees of Chandler, AZ, 11 grandchildren; Melinda, Hilary, Richard, Jon, Amanda, Bryan, Daniel, Carmelle, Kennedy, Carsyn, and Tanner, 8 great grandchildren, and one brother; Keith (Roma) Kniss of Lanark. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sisters.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday May 22, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Lanark Church of the Brethren with Pastor John Sgro officiating. Interment will be in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. A memorial fund has been established for the Church of the Brethren and the Parkinsons Foundation.

Gerald J. “Skip” Bitner

Gerald J. “Skip” Bitner, 62, of Lanark, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital from a malignant brain tumor.

Surviving are his loving wife, Dawn, mother; Evelyn Bitner of Ocala, FL, mother-in-law, Margie Shafer of Mt. Carroll, IL, sisters; Sally (Neville) Mangra of Pierson, FL, Sue Kirchner (Jack Shannon) of Ocala, FL; Terry Bitner of Coal City, IL, brother-in-law; Eldon “Elmo” (Cindy) Shafer of Poplar Grove, IL, children; Lisa (Roger) McCloskey of Dwight, IL, Heidi (Larry) Scaletta of Geneva, IL, Holly (Gary) Schmidt of Sycamore, IL, Aaron (Melissa) Bitner of Clinton, IA, Kenneth Preston (Sheilah Burrington) of Shannon, IL, and Rich (Chrissy) Preston of Minooka, IL, grandchildren; Kevin, Sam, Lauren, Shannon, Liz, Matalie, Allison, Trevor, Jenna, Hailey, and Marie, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father, Gerald C. Bitner, brothers-in-law, Danny Kirchner and Ronald Shafer.

A memorial service will be held at the Savanna Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. located at 706 Cedar Street, Savanna, IL. Russell-Frank Funeral Home in Lanark is assisting the Family.

Evelyn Arlene Cook

Evelyn Arlene Cook, age 93, of Chadwick, Illinois, died Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Manor Court Long-Term Care Facility, Freeport, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Hope United Methodist Church, Chadwick with Pastor Melwyn Alagodi and Pastor Dave Davies officiating. A time of gathering will be held, one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place in Chadwick Cemetery, Chadwick. Evelyn was born on September 28, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Adah (Buck) Schreiner in Chadwick, Illinois. She graduated from Chadwick High School with the Class of 1933. Evelyn attended Shimer College in Mount Carroll for two years, where she received her teaching certificate. Evelyn married Claude B. Cook on May 12, 1937 in Chadwick. Claude died on April 16, 1976.

After graduation from college, Evelyn taught at Fairhaven Country School for several years. In 1943 Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her as the first woman Postmaster in Chadwick. Evelyn was a compassionate woman, who loved taking care of her family. She was a member of the Chadwick Women’s Club and the Hope United Methodist Church. Evelyn was an unconditional Cub fan whose unwavering devotion to the team defied a century of disappointments on the field. She went to several Cub games over the years including a game with Atlanta in 1995 that she watched with family and friends from a sky box at Wrigley Field in celebration of her 80th birthday. Her last visit to Wrigley was in September 1999 to see the Cub's Team of the Century Celebration. Evelyn was an exceptional cook, known for her prize winning Dutch Apple Pie. She also enjoyed her flower gardens and crocheting dishcloths and potholders.

Evelyn will be dearly missed by her son, Frank (Louise) Cook of Freeport; one daughter in-law, Diane (Steve) Frankeberger of Mount Carroll; four grandchildren, Monica (Kurt) Cook-Sunderman of Chicago, Illinois, Jessica Cook of Sterling, Illinois, Melinda (Chris Behmer) Cook of Chicago, and Caitlin Cook of Freeport; and one great granddaughter, Ruby Behmer.

Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Claude; one son, Fredric; two brothers, Lloyd and Roy; and one sister, Regena.

Betty J. Haggerty

Betty J. Haggerty, age 84, of Yuma, Arizona, formerly of Savanna, Illinois, peacefully slipped away Monday, May 4, 2009 following a brief illness, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, surrounded by her children and dearest friend, Griffith Short.

Betty was born January 22, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Herman and Lillian (Hupenbecker) Tanner. She graduated from Boscobel, Wisconsin, High School. Betty married Nicholas Drosopoulos in 1942. She served in the United States Army as a Nurse during World War II. She later married Lloyd Haggerty in 1961, he passed away in 1996.

Betty was a professional seamstress working from home. She enjoyed boating, waterskiing, and was an avid gardener. She loved the Chicago Cubs. She had many hobbies, daily crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, knitting & crocheting, ceramics, painting, and crafts. For the past eight years, Betty enjoyed the company of her best friend, Griff Short. They enjoyed bowling, dancing and traveling extensively together.

Betty is survived by her children, Vicki (William) Fargo of South Gate, California, Sam (Barbara) Drosopoulos of West Chicago, Illinois, Dan Drosopoulos of Morrison, Illinois, Penni Jo (Jim) Kline of Freeport, Illinois, Linda Wagenknect of Payson, Arizona, and Craig (Cathy) Haggerty of Houston, Texas; sixteen grandchildren, Cohena, Adam, Andy (Jen), Melisa (fiancé Corby), Kevin, Heidi, Eric, Greg, Tim, Jason, Destiny, Kyle (Nicci), Keith, Cameron, Tom, and Matthew; four great-grandchildren, Eric, Aiden, Brandon, and Aubrie; and two sisters, June Fry of Clinton, Washington, and Jereen (William) Barron of Lamesa, Texas.

Penny Ann Landwer

Penny Ann Landwer, age 69 of Elizabeth, Illinois, died on Sunday, May 20, 2009 at her home. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences and tributes may be given to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com

Penny was born on April 5, 1940, the daughter of Albert and Margaret (Sakoski) Pawlowski in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Chicago area schools. Penny married Robin Landwer on December 9, 1967 in Elgin, Illinois. Robin passed away on March 12, 1998.

Penny was employed for several years by Coil Electric, Elizabeth and the Eaton Corporation, Hanover, Illinois. When Robin retired in June of 1997, so did Penny. Penny and Robin spent a lot of time together dancing and taking fishing trips to Mercer, Wisconsin. She loved taking care of her family and was an excellent cook, she was known for her Italian Beef. She enjoyed reading, needlepoint, quilting, gardening, and spending time outdoors. Most of all Penny cherished spending time with her grandchildren.

Penny will be dearly missed by two sons, Wesley (Deirdre) Landwer of Dixon, Illinois and Jody (Melody) Landwer of Elizabeth; two daughters, Kim (Rolf) Radke of Elizabeth and Karen (Dean) Hull of Hazel Green, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren, Michelle, Rolf, Jr., Mattie, Christopher, Kristin, Cameron, Ashleigh, Sarah, Cody, and Dylan; two great grandchildren, Kayden and Brianna; step-mother, Virginia Pawlowski of New Port Richey, Florida; and three brothers, Al (Vera) Pawlowski of Lake Villa, Illinois, Wayne (Donna) Pawlowski of McHenry, Illinois, and Paul Pawlowski of Trevor, Wisconsin.

Penny is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Robin.

Carroll "Keith" Patton

Carroll "Keith" Patton, age 91, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll. A Graveside Service will be held 12:00 noon Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Full Military Rites will be accorded by the Mt. Carroll American Legion. Keith was born March 11, 1918, the son of Joseph Carroll and Lillian Alma (Delp) Patton. He attended Mt. Carroll schools. Keith served in the US Army during World War II in Northern Africa. He spent all of his life in Mt. Carroll.

Keith is survived by two sisters, Elaine Bourne of Freeport, Illinois and Norma Rosen of Sun City, Arizona; and a nephew, Thomas Petty of Sun City, Arizona. He is preceded in death by both parents.

Clyde A. Kent

Clyde A. Kent, age 84, of Lanark, Ill., died Friday, May 8, 2009, at home. He was born May 9, 1924 the son of the late Elmer and Gertrude (Luke) Kent. He married Josephine O'Neil on January 30, 1946, she died June 19, 1980. He married Beverly Brininger Nowak on July 4, 1981.

Clyde was a paratrooper while serving in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0357 in Lanark. He was a machinist at the Savanna Army Depot and a member of St. Wendelin's Catholic Church. Clyde enjoyed playing Santa Claus, playing marbles and mowing grass. He is survived by his wife Beverly; one non David Kent of Cornell, Ill.; three daughters: Sandra (Richard) Wagner of Earlville, Ill.; Donna (Gary) Leachman of Charleston, Ill.; Norma Kent of Charleston, Ill.; 3 step daughters: Barbara Nowak (Sam Tucibat) of Baileyville, Ill.; .Janet (Norman) Groezinger of Stockton, Ill; .Julia (David) Wright of Lanark, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Eileen Kent of Shannon; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Josephine, daughter Mary, 4-brothers Delbert, Clifford, Walter and Golden. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Hermann Funeral Home in Shannon where a Scripture service will be held at 7p.m. Funeral service will be at St. Wendelin's Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 with the Rev. Michael Bolger officiating. Interment will be at St. Wendelin's Catholic Cemetery in Shannon, Ill. with Military Honors. A memorial fund has been established in his memory.

Teddy LeRoy Witt

Teddy LeRoy Witt, 68, of Lanark, died Thursday May 7, 2009 at his home. 

He was born on Nov. 14, 1940 in Freeport, a son of LeRoy H. and Ruth (Traum) Witt.  He was a 1958 Graduate of Lanark High School.

Teddy married Sandra Smith on March 18, 1961 at the Brookville EUB Church.  He farmed in the Lanark area all of his life, was employed at Elkay Manufacturing, and was a salesman for Cornelius Seed Corn for around fifty years.

He was a member of the First Brethren Church, Lanark Lions Club, the Carroll County Soil and Water Conservation Board, and was a past President of the Carroll County Livestock Feeders Association.  He was an avid Cubs fan and liked to watch his grandchildren play sports.

Teddy loved serving the community through the Lanark Lions Club and being a part of the Old Settlers Days Parade. He loved visiting the Lanark and Shannon restaurants and having coffee with friends while always finding out what was going on! Teddy will be dearly missed by his friends, family and community.

Surviving are his wife; Sandra Witt, his mother, Ruth Witt, two sons; Brian (Sharon) Witt and Bradley (Renea) Witt, all of Lanark.  Also surviving are five grandchildren; Stephanie (Jordan) Ruppert of Witt, IL, Justin, Jenessa, Hannah, and Reid Witt, all of Lanark, two brothers; Rev. Jerry (Pat) Witt of Stow, OH, and Ronald (Linda) Witt of Chillicothe, IL, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his Father.

Funeral Services will be on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at The First Brethren Church in Lanark, with Pastor Rev. E.C. Lathrop officiating.  Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery.  Friends may call at the church from 3 to 8 P.M. on Sunday.  Arrangements by the Russell-Frank Funeral Home.  A Memorial has been established in his memory.

Jason T. McGinty

Jason T. McGinty, age 50, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at his home. According to his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded. Inurnment will be at a later date at Lower York Cemetery in Thomson, Illinois. A memorial has been established in Jason’s memory. Jason was born on March 7, 1959, at home in Thomson, Illinois, the son of Richard S. and Yvonne (Atkins) McGinty. He was educated in the Thomson Schools. He married Carman Renner in 1976. They later divorced. He then married Becky Hook on May 13, 1996, in Mt. Carroll.

Jason was employed as a technician at General Electric for thirty-two years. Jason could fix almost anything. He had a great ability to “just figure it out.“ When his wife wanted a pond, he built the most beautiful pond which was the highlight of many garden shows. His wife was delighted to find out he was a pretty good carpenter in their many home remodeling projects. This earned him the nickname of “Manly Man” from his wife.

Jason loved his MOPAR muscle cars. He did all the restoration himself and displayed them at many car shows. He loved spending time with his grandchildren Layne and Owen. He was lovingly referred to as Grandpa Gummi Bear for the Gummi Bear treats he always brought them. Jason will be dearly missed by his wife and his family.

Jason is survived by his loving wife, Becky; two daughters, Brandy (Chad) Stephenson and Stacy (Joe) Stephenson, both of Fulton, Illinois; one stepson, Lewis Creed Jr. at home; his mother, Yvonne McGinty of Thomson; his father and mother - in - law, Don and Carol Hook of Fulton; two brothers, Kevin (Vicky) McGinty of Mt. Carroll, and Shawn McGinty of Waukegan, Illinois; two sisters, Babette (Terry) Elliot and Aleda Doran, both of Thomson; two grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Jason was preceded in death by his father, Richard McGinty; and his beloved daughters, Angela and Ekkoe McGinty.

Anna L. Crofton

Anna L. Crofton, 83 years, passed to heaven on April 16, 2009 at Heart of the Ozarks Healthcare, Ava. Anna was born Aug. 20, 1925 in Clintonville, Wisc., to Ernest and Ida (Oppermann) Thomack.

Anna graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and studied at the Lutheran Bible Institute, Minneapolis, Minn., for two years. Anna was a parish worker. Anna and Robert "Bob" Crofton, formerly of Lanark, IL,  were united in marriage on June 7, 1952 at LaCrosse, Wisc., and to this union four sons were born.

Anna was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ava, since 1991. She was involved in the Naomi Circle at Trinity. She led a non-denominational women's Bible study in Ava for many years. She also served along with her husband in civic groups such as the Ava Area Chamber of Commerce and Ava Lions Club, where she was recognized for her contribution as the Literature Chairperson.

She recently received a faithful service award from the Lions Club. Anna attended many Lions Club Conventions with her husband. Anna's enthusiasm and her joy for life were shared by all who knew her.

Her husband, Bob, is former pastor at Trinity and she was a faithful and supportive pastor's wife. Anna had a strong love for the Bible, her church family and her Lord.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Herbert, Martin, Walter, Ernest and Donald Thomack.

Anna is survived by her husband, Robert "Bob" Crofton, Ava; four sons, James (Sandra) Crofton, Rawlins, Wyo., Luther Crofton, Princeton, N.J., Stephen (Karen) Crofton, Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Mark (Grace) Crofton, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. Anna had seven grandchildren: Brent and Rachel (James); Daniel, Andrew and Elizabeth (Stephen); and Nikita and Charis (Mark). Anna is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Christian, and Owen; two brothers, Rev. Alwin Thomack, Newport, Mich., and Allen Thomack, Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, Eileen Dordal, Ham Lake, Minn.; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Anna will be Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church, Ava, with family receiving friends at 10 a.m. and burial following in the Ava Cemetery. Also, a visitation will be Friday, April 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava.

Officiating will be Pastor Wayne Strohschein and Chaplain Roger Flint. Memorials may be made to American Bible Society, Trinity Lutheran Church, Ava, or Community Hospice, an affiliate of Hospice Compassus, 807 N. Main, Ste. 1, Mtn. Grove, MO 65711. Mary K. Bimm

Mary K. Bimm, age 86, previously of Savanna, Illinois, died Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Carlisle Wellness and Rehab Center, Carlisle, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Memorials may be given in Mary’s name for Carlisle Wellness and Rehab Center. Mary was born on January 23, 1923, the daughter of John and Martha McCarthy in Savanna, Illinois. Mary enjoyed her childhood and loved growing up in the small river town of Savanna. Mary married Kenneth Bimm, her high school sweetheart on December 4, 1943, in Aberdeen, Maryland, prior to him being sent overseas to fight in World War II. He walked four miles every night to call on Mary. Kenneth passed away on October 9, 1992.

Mary was a homemaker who cherished the time she spent raising her family. Mary and her husband owned a large Victorian home and Mary’s mother stayed with them. Holidays were always celebrated in grand fashion. She loved her home and those who shared it with her. Mary had fond memories of traveling the Mississippi River on the steamboat, The Delta Queen, with Kenneth. Mary also enjoyed antique collecting, playing the piano and pump organ, and sharing her life with her sisters Patricia and Fuss. Most recently, Mary developed a love of art and gained confidence through her expression in art.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; her son, Craig Bimm; her daughter, Patricia Carr; a sister, Patricia Merz; and a brother, Morris McCarthy.

Mary will be dearly missed by her son in – law, Bob Carr of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandsons, Aaron (Jackie) Kreuder of Bondurant, Iowa, Josh (Jennifer) Kreuder of Savanna, Illinois, and Cash Bimm of Clinton, Iowa; her granddaughter, Amanda (Rodney) Kreuder of Ankeny; three great – grandchildren, Kiersten, Kelsey, and Jackson Kreuder; a sister, Florence “Fussy” Remrey of Savanna; and a nephew, Rod McCarthy.

Jean M. Porter

Jean M. Porter, 54, of Sterling, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at her home in Sterling after a lengthy illness. She was employed by Whiteside County Court Services as a secretary for 8 years.

Jean was born June 30, 1954, in Princeton, the daughter of Mahlon and Rita (Furman) Meling. She was united in marriage to Robert E. Porter on March 22, 1975, in Rochelle. Jean was a free spirit and loved her family very much. She babysat for several children in the area. Jean enjoyed quilting, sewing, baking, canning, and gardening. She taught religion at St. Mary Church, Sterling. Jean also was active in the Why Catholic Group and dispensed Holy Communion at Sacred Heart. Jean worked in the lunch room at Northside Elementary in Morrison. Her passion was being a spokesperson for the victim impact panel for Carroll, Bureau, Lee and Whiteside counties.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Sterling; one son, Michael Porter of DeKalb; one daughter, Sarah (Karl) Prowant of Lanark; one sister, Laurie (Reed) Harris of Rochelle; one brother, Craig (Barb) Meling of Watauga, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Joseph.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, April 27 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sterling, with the Rev. David Finn, celebrant, officiating. Burial was at Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley; Ronald McDonald House; the Dave Thomas Foundation; and Mass offerings. George E. Harshman

George E. Harshman, Sr, 87, of Rock Falls passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Sterling Pavilion Nursing Home in Sterling.

George was born January 31, 1922 in Menomonie, Wisconsin, son of Clarence and Laura (Christensen) Harshman. He married Elaine M. Owen on February 19, 1947 in Menomonie, Wisconsin. She preceded him in death on April 5, 1977.

He married Maxine Kummer on May 24, l979 in Rock Falls. She preceded him in death on February 25, l997.

George was a veteran of the United States Army serving in both World War II and the Korean War and was a member of the Sterling VFW. He received a purple heart while serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the 1st Brigade and served in the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines under General MacArthur.

He worked for Northwestern Steel and Wire Mill for 33 years, retiring in 1983.

George spent his summers at his residence at Castle Rock Lake near Wisconsin Dells where he enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed hunting, helping others with construction projects, snowmobile riding and motorcycle riding. In his later years he looked forward to solving his daily crossword puzzle.

He was preceded in death by both wives, a son (Glenn), three brothers, one sister and two step-children.

He is survived by five children: Shirley (Craig) Leigh of Prophetstown; Karen (Ron) Lester of Nashville, North Carolina; Alan Harshman of Dixon; Luanne (Joe) Gordon of Lanark and George “Skip” (Sherry) Harshman, Jr. of Longs, South Carolina; four step children and families, 16 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother also survive him.

Mary E. Fahlen

Mary E. Fahlen, age 68 of Savanna, Illinois, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 27, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Mary was born on August 10, 1940, the daughter of Joseph and Juanita (Huling) Sterbenz in Iowa City, Iowa. She attended Savanna area schools. On April 18, 1959 Mary married Conrad D. Fahlen at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Savanna.

Mary was employed by ITW Shakeproof in Elgin, Illinois and Senior Flexonics in Bartlett, Illinois. Mary retired and moved back to Savanna in 2003. She enjoyed spending time with her siblings playing Yahtzee and California Rummy. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and hand held poker games. Most of all, Mary cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

Mary is survived by a son, Conrad D. (Debbie) Fahlen of Villa Rica, Georgia; four daughters, Dena (Dutch) Burton of Hyden, Kentucky, Connie (Kevin) Strebel of Pingree Grove, Illinois, Teresa Kerley of St. Charles, Illinois, and Darcy Crowe of Round Lake Beach, Illinois; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four sisters, Donna Petersen of Sabula, Iowa, Pat (Carl) Anderson of Thomson, Illinois, Barb (Rich) Foster of Rockford, Illinois and Verna Stage of Fulton, Illinois; and her special Yorkie companion, Peaches.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Conrad; a daughter, Laura Marie; a son, Dale Allen; a brother, Donnie Sterbenz; a sister, Nita Jackson; a grandson, Sonny; and three great grandsons, Justin, Justin, and Joseph.

James Francis Dearborn

James Francis Dearborn, age 75 of Savanna, Illinois, died Friday, April 24, 2009 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Reverend Michael Wey of the First Presbyterian Church, Savanna officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Savanna V.F.W. Post #2223, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, prior to the service at the funeral home. James was born on February 7, 1934, the son of Frank Arnold and Blanche Marie (McCallister) Dearborn in Iowa City, Iowa. He attended high school in DeWitt and after graduation he served his country in the United States Navy. He served from 1952 – 1955, as a machinist stationed aboard the U.S.S. Laertes. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1966. He was first married to Beverly Huber in 1957 in DeWitt, Iowa and they were divorced in 1966. He later married Linda M. Bock on June 30, 1990 in Dixon, Illinois. Linda died on July 16, 2008.

James was employed as a machinist for Caterpillar in Mount Joy, Iowa and W.A. Whitney in Rockford, Illinois. He also owned and operated Dearborn Salvage in DeWitt, Iowa for three years. After he moved to Savanna, he operated Jim’s Small Engine Repair out of his home in Savanna for the past ten years. He enjoyed fishing, crosswords and tinkering in the garage. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

James will be dearly missed by two daughters, Debbie (Pat) Connor of Savanna and Patti (Sam) Jackson Jr. of Savanna; three sons, Terry Dearborn of Lanark, Illinois, LaVern Dearborn of Newton, Iowa, and Kent Dearborn of Polo, Illinois; two step-sons, Jim (Angela) Wakefield of Savanna, and John Wakefield of Buffalo, Missouri; twelve grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, Rich Dearborn of Davenport, Iowa; and three sisters, Milly Fisher of DeWitt, Barb Pearl of Orange Grove, Texas, and Judy (Richard) Marburger of Green Island, Iowa.

James is preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Linda.

Donald E. Snapp

Donald E. Snapp, 85 of Pearl City died on Tuesday April 21, 2009 at Manor Court in Freeport. Born on July 3, 1923 in Pearl City, he is a son of Adam and Emma (Becker) Snapp. On April 9, 1955, Donald married Iola O. Snetcher in Pearl City.

Donald was a farmer all his life near Pearl City. He was a member of Ebenezer Salem U.C.C. of Pearl City. He enjoyed playing cards and going on rides looking at scenery.

Survivors include one sister; Evelyn (Bill) Birchen, nephews; Norman (Mary) Brinkmeier, Steven (Pam) Brinkmeier, Gary (Sylvia) Brinkmeier, Rodney (Mary) Birchen, and many grand nieces and nephews, and close friend Margie Lott. He was preceded in death by his wife Iola, parents Adam and Emma Snapp, sister and brother-in-law; Viola and Kenneth Brinkmeier, and nephew Jeff Birchen.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday April 24, 2009 at Ebenezer Salem U.C.C. near Pearl City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday at the Offenheiser-Schwarz Funeral Home. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Christel Michael

Christel Michael, 69, of Lanark, died Tuesday April 21, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1939 in Germany, a daughter of Paul and Minna (Broschinski) Klein. She came to the United States in 1945. She married Russell Michael, who preceded her in death.

Christel was employed at Burgess Battery Co. and then at Micro Switch for 25 years before retiring.

She enjoyed having family and friends over to eat. She loved to cook and really enjoyed her grandchildren.

Surviving are one daughter, Jackie (Paul) Albertson, and one son, Mike Bingner, four grandchildren; Katelyn and Joshua Albertson, all of Lanark, Schyler and Kalina Bingner of Freeport. Also surviving are one sister; Ann Marchesi of Lake Tahoe, CA, and one brother; Erhardt Dombrowski of Lubeck, Germany, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Friday April 24, 2009 at the Lanark Cemetery with Rev. Ellis Boughton officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Russell Frank Funeral Home in Lanark. A memorial has been established in her memory.

Michael Phillip Wild, Sr.

Michael Phillip Wild, Sr., age 69, of Hanover, Illinois, died Sunday, April 19, 2009, surrounded by his family at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, Illinois. Mike was born April 13, 1940 in Gratiot, Wisconsin, the son of Hans and Margaret (Barron) Wild. He attended Pleasant Hill Country School and the Hanover Grade School. On July 23, 1960, Mike married Mary E. Flies in Hanover. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and later the Union Pacific, retiring after 39 years. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hanover.

Mike treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved farming and working on tractors and cars. Mike enjoyed listening to country music while taking long rides in the countryside and always marveled at the first snowfall as it covered everything with a white blanket. Over the past months, Mike and his family appreciated the loving care given by the Elizabeth Nursing Home staff and Dr. Crist.

Mike will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary of Hanover; a daughter, Melody (Jody) Landwer of Elizabeth; four sons, Michael, Jr.(Sandra) of Elizabeth, Mark (fiancé Michelle Meyers) of Elizabeth, Matthew (Darcy) of Hanover and Martin(special friend Stephanie Gornick) of Hanover; four grandchildren, Cody & Dylan Landwer, Carter Wild, & Madison Wild and one step grandchild, Ashley Myers, five sisters, Alberta Wild, Mary Wild, Margaret Service, Nellie(Nick) Bainbridge, and Donna(Lynn) Eadie, all of Hanover; four brothers, William(Bev Paisley) of Stockton, Pat (DeeAnna) of Hanover, Thomas(Lynne) of Stockton, and Herman of Hanover; and many nieces and nephews. Gregory A. Lien

Gregory A. Lien, age 52, of Freeport, Illinois, previously of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Gregory was born July 7, 1956 in Savanna, the son of Carrol and Elaine (Dunn) Lien. He attended Hanover High School, Hanover, Illinois. On May 14, 1996 he married Stacy L. Workman. Gregory was a machinist at Freeport Metal Works until he was injured.

Gregory loved to restore old cars, play the guitar and collect old die-cast model cars. He was very proud of his car collection. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play jokes on everyone. Gregory could have a conversation with just about anyone.

Gregory will be dearly missed by his wife Stacy of Freeport; son; Justin of Freeport; mother, Elaine Zemke of Lanark, Illinois, father Carrol (Merna) Lien of Buckhannon, West Virginia; two sisters, Deborah (David) Leitzen and Rebecca Nave both of Savanna, Illinois; several nieces; nephews; cousins; aunts and uncles; step-father; Wayne Zemke of Hanover; step-sister Suzanne (Brian) Wilkins, and step-brother Arthur Zemke, both of Tennessee.

Gregory was preceded in death by his brother, Randy, grandparents, and several aunts and uncles.

Don C. Hollewell

Don C. Hollewell, 88, of Milledgeville, died Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009 at Serenity Home in Oregon following a brief illness.

Don was born January 28, 1921 in Milledgeville the son of Clayton and Esther (Donnelly) Hollewell. He was united in marriage to June Rowe on September 22, 1946 in Oregon. She preceded him in death on March 9, 2006. Don farmed in the Milledgeville area for 63 years. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. Don was a member of the Dairy Herd Association, the Live Stock Feeders, a founding member of the Carroll County Pork Producers, and the Carroll County Zoning Board. Growing up as a child, he lived near the Ogle County Fairgrounds and loved harness racing. Don's biggest passion was the love he had for his grandchildren and great grandchildren whom he cherished and adored with all his heart.

He is survived by 2 sons, Gary (Doris) Hollewell of Forreston and Steve (Bryan) Hollewell of Milledgeville; 4 grandchildren, Lee (Becky) Hollewell of German Valley, SuAnn (Matt) Solverson of Darlington, Wisc., Evan and Dean Hollewell of Milledgeville; 4 great grandchildren, Curtis Hollewell, Jared Hollewell, Abigail Solverson and Clara Solverson; a sister Patricia Fay of Park Ridge; and many dear friends. Don was preceded in death by his wife, a brother James Hollewell and a sister Nancy Young.

Reuben Harvey (Bud) Seitner, Jr.

Reuben Harvey (Bud) Seitner, Jr., age 86, of Mt. Carroll, IL, died April 13, 2009, at Good Samaritan Center, Mt. Carroll. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the First Baptist Church, Mt. Carroll with Reverend Jim Green and Reverend Bob Ziebarth officiating.

Reuben (Bud) was born in Morris, IL, on Dec. 21, 1922, the son of Rev. Reuben H. and Ruth (Hanson) Seitner. The family moved to Mt. Carroll in 1926 when Reuben Sr. became the pastor at First Baptist Church. Bud graduated from Mt. Carroll High School in 1940 where he was active in music, football, and basketball. He attended West Point before attending Coe College.

His education at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, was interrupted by WWII where he served as a tank driver in Company B, 753rd Tank Battalion, 36th Infantry Division, U.S. Seventh Army. Bud was wounded twice and received two purple hearts and the bronze star for valor. He began the war as a private and finished it as a 2nd lieutenant.

After the war, Bud returned to Coe where he was active in Student Affairs and President of the Student Body. He finished his education at Coe College where he met and married Kathryn Loomis on Jan. 31, 1947. The couple moved to Mt. Carroll upon college graduation where Bud's career included being an agent for Equitable Life Insurance, teaching and working for Shimer College, and eventually owning and operating Seitner Chevrolet, Buick, and Pontiac. In addition he worked at Campbell Center, was on the Mt. Carroll Cemetery Board and the Foster Court Board of Directors.

Music was an important part of both Bud and Katie's lives. Bud directed the 7 Last Words, Messiah, choirs at First Baptist Church, Lutheran Church, and Methodist Church. He was dedicated to Katie's musical performances where he could be found back stage "holding her purse."

Bud (Papa) enjoyed music, his yard, his pipe, and his dogs--always Cocker Spaniels. He proudly supported and followed the athletic careers of his grandchildren wherever they played.

Bud was a 63 year member of the American Legion and a life long member of the First Baptist Church serving on various church boards.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and wife Kathryn. Bud will be dearly missed by daughters, Sarah (James) Wheeler, Susie (Davis) Ostrum; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Brian) Wurster, Mary Kathryn (Joe) Hansen, Clayton Ostrum, Colton Ostrum; 3 great-grandchildren, Andy and Emily Wurster, and Reuben (Ben) Hansen; one sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Phillips of Silver Springs, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews.

Genevra Atkins Bundy

Genevra Bundy, age 92, of Richland Center, died on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Schmitt Woodland Hills, in Richland Center, WI.

She was born in Hanover, IL on May 7, 1916, the daughter of John and Anna (Whalen) Atkins. Genevra attended Hanover schools. She was united in marriage with Harvey Peschang on December 27, 1934, and they were blessed with one son Cecil Clair and daughters Alyce Ann and Debborah, before he preceded her in death. She married Carlos Bundy on October 22, 1960 in Mount Caroll, IL. They were owners of Bundy’s Repair Shop in that city for eight years, and then operated the business in Lone Rock, Wisconsin for 15 years, prior to Carlos’ death. Genevra worked as a Lab Tech at the Richland Foundry for fourteen years, and then worked at Pine Valley Manor for three and one half years. In addition to working outside the home, she opened her home to seven Central American students who were attending the University of Wisconsin Richland. She enjoyed and loved the students. All of her life she volunteered time to others, enjoyed taking classes at the Campus, enjoyed travelling and listening to music.

Survivors include her children: Cecil Clair (Sandra) Peschang of Kansas City, MO , Alyce Ann (Bruce) Haring of Clinton, IA , Debborah Connery of Rochester Hills, MI, 11 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, one sister: Vera (Bill) Eadie of Hanover, IL, three nieces and two nephews. In addition to her husbands, Genevra was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gerald; son in law Robert Connery; and three granddaughters and one grandson. Inurnment will be in the Hanover Evergreen Cemetery. The Pratt Funeral Service is assisting the family with their arrangements. Benson E. Dayboll

Ben was born on March 27, 1922, the son of John and Victoria (Hill) Dayboll in Grantham Township, Ontario, Canada. He was shot and wounded while serving in the Canadian Army during World War II and was discharged on May 12, 1945. Ben met his future wife, Eleanor W. Clugston while he was recovering and they were married on April 18, 1946 in Welland, Ontario. Ben became a citizen of the United States on November 1, 1956. Eleanor died July 8, 1987 in Monroe, Wisconsin.

Ben farmed his entire life, starting as a farmhand and eventually owning his own farm. He loved everything about farming, from tinkering on the farm to growing crops, and milking dairy cows. Ben sold a portion of his farm, built a home and retired in 1992. He was a member of the Thomson American Legion Post Donald Ashpole #1025. He enjoyed attending Thrashing Day Celebrations, gardening and mowing. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Ben is survived by his daughter, Barbara “Bobbi” (Steven) Kaufman of Thomson, Illinois; a granddaughter, Melinda “Mindy” Kaufman of Thomson; one sister, Myrtle Szalagyi of Canada; and several nieces and nephews.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; Eleanor; six brothers and one sister.

Fred D. “Grandpa” Brooks, Jr.

Fred D. “Grandpa” Brooks, Jr. age 63, of Sabula, Iowa, died April 11, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. Fred was born on July 23, 1945, the son of Fred D. and Lois S. (Walters) Brooks Sr. in Freeport, Illinois. He attended school in Orangeville, Illinois and attended high school in Freeport. Fred married Vicki J. Diedrich on September 14, 1963 in Freeport.

Fred worked for various factories in the area, until retiring in 2007. He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had an eye for hunting asparagus and morel mushrooms. He also enjoyed gardening. Most of all, Fred cherished spending time with his grandchildren.

Fred is survived by one son, Ray Brooks of Thomson, Illinois; and two daughters, Lois (Pat) Buchholz of Thomson, and Tara (Fred) Ferguson of Arkansas; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Nathan, Matthew, Alyssa, Zachary, Erin, and Adam (Grandpa’s Boy Friday); two great grandchildren, Owen and Mason; one brother, Glen (Maxine) Brooks of Moline, Illinois; two sisters, Barb McNabb of East Moline, and Jo Wubben of Mount Carroll; and sister in-law, Annette Brooks of Cambridge, Illinois.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Larry Brooks; two brothers in-law, Jim McNabb and Gerald Wubben; a nephew, Jason Wubben, and a niece, Carmen Riewerts.

Dwayne Paul "D.P." Harridge

Dwayne Paul "D.P." Harridge, age 52, of Mt.Carroll, Illinois, died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at St. Anthony Hospital, Rockford, Illinois. Dwayne was born May 29, 1956 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Paul and Bessie (Temple) Harridge. He grew up on a farm along Vinegar Hill Road. Dwayne is a 1974 graduate of the Thomson High School, Thomson, Illinois. In 1978, he married Diana Lynn Robbe. They had two sons, David and Daniel. Later, on April 20, 1991, Dwayne married Denise Behrens at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Carroll. This loving union brought two more children, Donovan and Dena.

In the fall of 1978, Dwayne began a milk hauling business, Harridge Trucking. He continued this business until his retirement in 2006. Prior to hauling milk, Dwayne had worked for Colehour Elevators in Mt. Carroll. Throughout his career, Dwayne received great satisfaction working with Dairy Farmers. He worked hard, proud keeping his trucks some of the cleanest in the business.

Dwayne loved family and grandkids. He kept very involved with his children as they participated in 4-H and also coaching and attending their activities. He enjoyed his cars and listening to the Beach Boys. Dwayne was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Carroll.

He will be dearly missed by his wife, Denise of Mt. Carroll; three sons, David and Stephanie of Mt. Carroll, Daniel of Benton, Wisconsin and Donovan of Mt. Carroll; a daughter, Dena of Mt. Carroll; five grandchildren, Tyler, Allison, Lindsey, Emily and Diana; his mother, Bessie Harridge of Mt. Rev. William "Bill" Joseph Kermott

WYOCENA - The Rev. William "Bill" Joseph Kermott, 86, of Wyocena, awoke to glory Thursday, March 26, 2009, passing at home while in the arms of his loving wife, Patricia Ann Kermott, and surrounded by members of his family.

He was born Nov. 10, 1922, in Milwaukee, the son of Percival and Ruby Kermott, and younger brother of Robert Kermott. A professional musician, William played violin as a guest soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony at age 17, and sang on several radio programs including "Morning Chapel" as well as the Wally White television program. He continued to sing throughout his life and was an active member of the Gospeliers double quartet, performing at nursing homes and community events. Well known throughout his life for his musical ability, his extraordinary sense of humor and gift for punnery was appreciated (usually) by those in his congregations and always by those in his family.

On Aug. 2, 1953, Bill married Patricia "Patty" Ann Pease at Wyocena Union Baptist Church, where they met while he was serving in his first pastorate. Years later, after more than 50 years of service in the ministry, he and Patty returned to the church in Wyocena where he served as a deacon, choir member and soloist.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army due to illness so he immediately took up the call and pursued the ministry. He graduated from Carroll College in 1951, and Northern Baptist Seminary in 1953, and was ordained June 20, 1953.

He is survived by his wife, Patty; his daughter, Karen, of Savanna, IL, and son-in-law Wayne and grandsons, Jeremiah, Joshua and Jason; his son, William J., and daughter-in-law Wendy and granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah; daughter, Susan, and son-in-law Bill and grandsons Bill Jr. and Peter and granddaughter Sheryl; daughter, Carole, and son-in-law Kirk Sr. and granddaughters Tricia and Olivia and grandson Kirk Jr.; son, John, and daughter-in-law Amy, grandson Johnny and granddaughters Hannah, Emma, Gwen and Manon; son, David, and daughter-in-law Renee, grandsons William, Ian, David and granddaughters, Amber, Rachael and Courtney; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Terry (Connie) Pease, and Allen (Linda) Pease; other near relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; his niece Kathy; and nephew, Robert.

A life celebration was held March 29 at Wyocena Community Church. Full military rites were conducted by the Pardeeville American Legion and VFW Posts. Burial was in Wyocena Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wyocena Community Church.

Elsie Laura Higgins

Elsie Laura Higgins, age 89, of Savanna, Illinois, died Sunday, April 12, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center South Campus, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Church, prior to the Mass. Memorials may be given in Elsie’s name for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Elsie was born July 17, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Giacomo and Bartaloma (Celfo) Distefano. She was baptized July 19, 1919 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Chicago. Elsie is a graduate of Harper High School, Chicago, and then attended the Northwestern Secretarial Institute, Chicago. On December 7, 1946, Elsie married Ralph Arthur Higgins at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Chicago.

Elsie and Ralph moved to Savanna in 1965 to own and operate Johnson’s Drugstore, where she worked as a licensed Pharmacy Technician. They retired in 1993. Elsie was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna, where she was very active. Elsie taught the 1st Grade Holy Eucharist Class for over twenty years. She also helped deliver meals on wheels and worked with the Savanna Thrift Store for many years. More than anything, she enjoyed being a grandmother, always enjoying the grandkids many visits to Savanna.

Elsie will be dearly missed by her husband, Ralph of Savanna; her son, Bryan Higgins and his wife, Mary Warren, of Burlington, Vermont; her daughter, Gail Ann Higgins of Anna, Texas; five grandchildren, Adam, Grace and Travis Higgins, and Andrea and Adrienne Butcher; two sisters, Agnes Swierczek of California and Mildred Konrath of Chicago; and a special niece, Kelly Higgins-Magana, who helped Elsie and Ralph with many of life’s challenges in their older years. Elsie is preceded in death by both parents, four sisters and two brothers.

Dean K. Frederick

Dean K. Frederick, age 68, of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at home. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Mount Carroll Church Of God, with Pastor Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll. Visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., one hour prior to the service at the church. Dean was born on August 16, 1940 on a farm in Freedom Township, Carroll County, the son of Leslie H. and Lucy E. (Morhardt) Frederick. Dean moved with his family to Mount Carroll in 1944. He attended Mount Carroll High School and graduated with the Class of 1958. Dean met his wife Judith E. Bucher at a church camp in high school and they were married March 18, 1961 in Mount Carroll. Judy died June 7, 1996.

Dean was a Millwright for Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois for thirty years, retiring in 1990. After retirement Dean worked with Calhoun Auctions setting up and preparing for auctions. He was a long time member of the Pleasant Valley Church of God, but attended church at the Mount Carroll Church of God. Dean enjoyed gardening, auctions, antiques, and collecting antique clocks and kerosene lamps. Dean loved walking around Mount Carroll and was fluent in all of its history. But most of all, Dean treasured spending time with his family and friends.

Dean is survived by a son, Jay Frederick of Freeport, Illinois; a daughter, Jodi Frederick of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; a granddaughter, Courtney Frederick of Lanark, Illinois; two brothers, Floyd (Ardith) Frederick of Mount Carroll, and Carl Frederick of Rock Falls, Illinois; three sisters, Bernice Maszk of Mount Carroll, Marie Frederick of Mount Carroll, and Shelvy (Dale) Endress of Mount Carroll; a brother in-law, Ronald Bucher of Rock Falls; and a special friend Kathy Siedenburg of Mount Carroll.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy; three brothers, Leo, Sherman, and Harvey; and a sister, Virginia Zimmerman.

Beulah Lucille Pratt

Beulah Lucille Pratt, age 92, of Savanna, Illinois died on Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Pastor Larry Thomson officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, for two hours prior to the service at the Funeral Home.

Beulah was born on June 21, 1916, the daughter of Samuel and Mae (Davis) Corbett on the family farm in Washington Township, Savanna. She graduated from Savanna High school, Class of 1933. Beulah married George Edward Pratt on January 7, 1938 in Dubuque, Iowa. George died on March 5, 1968 in Alamagordo, New Mexico.

Beulah was employed as a cook by various restaurants in the area. She worked at Grimm’s Café, Savanna, the Hanover Café, Hanover, Illinois and The Indian Head Supper Club, Savanna. Beulah enjoyed sewing and quilting. Most of all, Beulah loved spending time with her family and friends.

Beulah will be missed by three daughters, Dorothy Oliver of Huntsville, Alabama, Judy Dunn of Thomson, Illinois, and Dinah Tharp of Pittsburg, Oklahoma; two sons, James (Wanda) Pratt of Yankton, South Dakota, and Herbert (Sandra) Pratt of Thomson; one daughter in-law, Betty Pratt of Lakeland, Florida; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; and one brother, Russell (Joyce) Corbett of Savanna, Illinois; two sisters in-law, Marcella Corbett of Waunakee, Wisconsin and Wilma Corbett of Savanna; and many nieces and nephews.

Beulah is preceded in death by her husband, George; two brothers, four sisters, one son; four sons in-law and one grandchild.

Irven A. Leinen

Irven A. Leinen, age 41, of Savanna, Illinois died Monday, April 6, 2009 at home.
