High School Softball

Thunder Win NUIC-West Championship

THOMSON ­ West Carroll captured the NUIC-West Conference championship last Tuesday (May 12) on Senior Night, posting an 11-1 win over Stockton.

Tiffany Cole was the winning pitcher for the Thunder. Cole finished with seven strikeouts for victorious West Carroll.

More than one West Carroll player stepped up and delivered at the plate. Kaiti Mathey had a game-high three hits for the Thunder. Kayla Kasbohm contributed two hits for West Carroll in the win. Kasbohm and Jenessa Miller drove in two runs apiece for the Thunder.

West Carroll improved to 25-8 overall and 13-1 in the NUIC-West.

ED Nips Pearl City

In another game of local interest, East Dubuque held off Pearl City, winning 1-0. East Dubuque scored the game's lone run in the bottom half of the fourth inning.

Sam Belken tossed a one-hitter for East Dubuque.

Nicole Lawler suffered the loss for Pearl City. Lawler struck out five while allowing five hits for the Wolves.

Eastland, Pearl City Split Doubleheader

PEARL CITY ­ Eastland and Pearl City split a high school softball doubleheader Thursday. In the first game, Eastland outlasted Pearl City 5-3. Host Pearl City, however, fared better in the second game, defeating Eastland 4-3.

Starting pitcher Marissa Harris was strong from the circle for Eastland in the first game, striking out 18 Pearl City batters. Harris was also a key batter for Eastland, delivering two hits for the Cougars. Bricelynn Myers and Haylee Endress also had two hits apiece for Eastland.

Gwen Scott pitched Pearl City past Eastland in the second game. Scott, who finished with three strikeouts, only walked two Eastland hitters.

Nicole Lawler was the offensive catalyst for Eastland, providing three hits for the Cougars.

Dakota Takes Two

At Dakota, Durand/Pecatonica dropped a doubleheader. Homestanding Dakota defeated Durand/Pecatonica 9-1 and 15-5, winning easily in each game.

Sam Derr continued to pitch well for Dakota as she claimed her 14th and 15th wins of the campaign.

Natalie Olsen, Michelle Bowers and Erika Lawson each had two hits for Dakota in the first game.

Dakota improved to 21-6 after posting the two wins in the doubleheader.

Durand/Pecatonica slipped to 16-10 following the loss.

In another area game, East Dubuque defended its home field in impressive fashion, defeating Galena 11-1 in five innings.

Milledgeville/Polo Pounces on A-FC

ASHTON ­ Visiting Milledgeville/Polo blanked A-FC 17-0 in five innings on Saturday in a late regular-season high school softball matchup between two longtime rivals.

Milledgeville/Polo pitcher Keali Engelkens dominated, striking out 14 for the first 15 batters she faced. Englekens ranks as one of the area's top high school softball pitchers. The Missiles improved to 25-2 after posting the win.

Milledgeville/Polo made the most of a balanced offensive attack en route to the convincing victory. Andrea Herin led Milledgeville/Polo offensively with a game-high four RBIs. Britt Woodin followed with three RBIs for the Missiles. Mel Schleuning and Brianna Herin each had two RBIs for the Milledgeville/Polo club.

Lady Wolves Take Two

In other games Saturday, Pearl City swept a doubleheader from A-FC, defeating the host team 9-2 and 9-1 during the twinbill.

Nicole Lawler was the winner for Pearl City in the first game. Lawler also helped her cause at the plate with two hits. The Pearl City pitcher belted a double in the opening game as part of a solid outing.

Gwen Scott won the second game for the Wolves. Scott also had a hit for Pearl City, which improved to 10-19 as a result of the victory.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Missiles handle Aquin

MILLEDGEVILLE ­ Host Milledgeville/Polo made the most of four hits last Tuesday (May 12), defeating Aquin 10-3. The high school baseball game wasn't an offensive clinic but the Missiles managed to finish out in front.

Milledgeville/Polo was extremely patient at the plate, drawing five walks. The Missiles also had four batters hit during the matchup that ended with the winning team boasting 10 runs.

Kirk Engelkens was the winning pitcher for the Missiles, hurling a complete game. Engelkens struck out six batters for the Missiles.

Aaron Schmelzle was the leading player offensively for Milledgeville/Polo. Schmelzle had a double and an RBI as he took on a lead role for the Missiles.

Galena Over ED

In another area high school baseball game, Galena edged East Dubuque 5-4. Carson Buss tossed a complete game for the Pirates. Buss was also an offensive leader, collecting two hits and driving in a pair of runs for homestanding Galena. The Pirates improved to 8-10 overall after securing the win over East Dubuque.

Adam Hocking also had two hits for Galena.

The Pirates used a three-run sixth inning to remain out in front during the late regular-season contest.

Eastland Shuts Out Warren/Stockton

WARREN ­ Eastland didn't have any trouble getting past Warren/Stockton Wednesday evening in a high school baseball meeting. The Cougars set the tone early on. Eastland claimed an early lead and never let up on its way to a 12-0 win in three innings.

Drew Carroll smashed two home runs for the Cougars. Eastland's dozen runs proved to be too much for homestanding Warren/Stockton.

Proven slugger Tony Dunlap was another offensive leader for Eastland. Dunlap collected three hits and drove in two runs for the Cougars. Cameron Geertz contributed two hits and drove in three runs for Eastland.

Ben Delp was the winning pitcher for the Cougars. Delp limited Warren/Stockton batters throughout the contest. He only allowed only four hits in three strong innings of worm from the mound.

The Cougars plated two runs in the first inning and three in the second stanza. Eastland put the game completely out of Warren/Stockton's reach in the third inning with a seven-run effort.

VanOosten Leads Missiles Past Durand/Pec

DURAND ­ Milledgeville/Polo established an early lead on Saturday and never faltered en route to a 18-2 win over Durand/Pecatonica in five innings. The Missiles scored early and often, defeating the host team with much room to spare in the regular-season baseball contest.

Matt VanOosten provided the biggest spark offensively for the Missiles. VanOosten was perfect at the plate as he went 4-for-4 with a grand slam. The Milledgeville/Polo offensive standout connected on a double and delivered a game-high seven RBIS.

Wolves Slip Past Rockford Christian

The area high school baseball slate was quite full Saturday. In another area prep baseball game, Pearl City pulled off a win at home, edging Rockford Christian 7-6.

Visiting Rockford Christian scored four runs in the top half of the third inning but Pearl City wouldn't go away. The Wolves scored five runs in the bottom half of the third stanza, answering Rockford Christian's offensive outburst.

Offensively, Pearl City finished with 11 hits while only leaving three on base.

Joe Harrington was the winning pitcher for PEarl City. The Wolves moved to 7-15 after posting the win.

East Dubuque Over RR/SM

East Dubuque also worked its way into the win column on Saturday. In an explosive effort, East Dubuque prevailed at home, defeating River Ridge/Scales Mound 15-9.

Brandon Beyer provided some highlights for River Ridge/Scales Mound in the road game, finishing with three hits and three RBIs. Beyer belted a home run for the Wildcats in the setback.
