Sturtevant's Carroll U. Drops Doubleheader
The Carroll University baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday.
The losses dropped the Pioneers to 8-19 overall while the Warriors improved to 12-24.
After falling 19-7 in the opener, it appeared Carroll would earn a series split after leading 7-3 through four innings of
the nightcap.
WLC plated three runs in the top of the fifth to pull to within 7-6 then equalized with a run in the top of the sixth. The
game remained tied at seven apiece through eight innings (of the regularly scheduled 7-inning game) until the Warriors score
two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Down by two, the Pioneers didn't go down without a fight, though. After George Simons grounded out to the third-baseman
to lead off the inning, seniors Chris Elliott and Andy Sturtevant (Shannon/Eastland High
School) hit back-to-back singles to give Carroll runners on first and second with one out. In the next at-bat, WLC's shortstop scooped up a Jimmy Marlin
ground ball to start a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
