The Battle of Chaplin Creek Civil War Reenactment and Living History Weekend

The Franklin Grove Area Historical Society and Battery G, 2nd Illinois Light Artillery Civil War Reenactment Unit are pleased to present The 2nd Annual Battle of Chaplin Creek - Civil War Reenactment and Living History Weekend, June 27th and 28th in Franklin Grove, IL.

"Similar to the 2008 event, The Battle of Chaplin Creek depicts a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces in a struggle to control a small village in the south," said Jim Tanquary, president of the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society. "However, unlike other typical reenactment weekends, the 2009 Battle of Chaplin Creek will feature a wide variety of living history civilian reenactors who portray various residents, craftsmen and artisans highlighting many everyday aspects of life during the 1860's in the small town of Chaplin Creek Village."

On Saturday, the Union Army attacks the Rebel forces and attempts to take control of the village. Heavy fighting takes place both in the village and in the fields outside of town but the Confederate forces successfully defend the village and defeat the ever aggressive Yankees. However, on Sunday the Yankees strike again and after a severe battle with many prisoners and wounded from both sides, the Yankees defeat the Rebel forces and take control of the town.

Chaplin Creek Village Overview

Founded and supported by the Franklin Grove Area Historical Society, Chaplin Creek Village is an evolving, full-scale historical restoration project depicting a prairie settlement typical of the middle 19th century.

"Chaplin Creek Village is a re-creation of a small town as it may have appeared here in the area in the mid-1800's," said Tanquary. "The Village is located just south of the village limits of Franklin Grove and has been developed over the last 25 years by a dedicated group of citizens who have sought to protect some special old buildings and other historical artifacts. 100% of the proceeds of this event go to the restoration of the buildings at the Village."

In addition to the two battles during the reenactment, activities include Tours of Chaplin Creek Village and its Historic Buildings; Jerry Kowalski playing General Thomas and Scott Whitney playing General Grant; Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery Drills; Opportunities to visit Union and Confederate campsites and medical tents; Shop with the Sutlers and Food Vendors; Attend a Fashion Show and Ladies Tea Party; Participate in children's activities; Witness the trial of a Confederate Spy; Attend a Civil War Ball Saturday evening; And attend an 1800's period church service on Sunday morning.

The reenactment and living history weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday June 27th and 28th at Chaplin Creek Village in Franklin Grove, IL. For more information including ticket orders, please visit our web site at www.chaplincreek.com; write to us at ccinfo@chaplincreek.com or call 815-990-5090.
