Cubs select 51 players in the 2008 First-Year-DraftThe Chicago Cubs completed the 2008 First-Year Player Draft having selected 51 players, including first round pick (19th overall) Andrew Cashner, a right-handed pitcher from Texas Christian University (TCU). Overall, Chicago selected 28 pitchers (three left-handers), 12 infielders, eight outfielders and three catchers. Cashner was 9-4 with nine saves and a 2.32 ERA (14 ER/54.1 IP) in 30 relief appearances for TCU. The righthander averaged 13.3 strikeouts per nine innings pitched en route to earning first-team All-Conference and third-team All-American honors. The Cubs selected infielder Ryan Flaherty from Vanderbilt in the supplemental round. Flaherty, who played second base for Team USA last summer, set a school single-season record with a 35-game hitting streak in 2007. Chicago chose catcher Michael Brenly from UNLV with its 36th pick. He is the son of Cubs announcer and former Arizona Diamondbacks manager, Bob Brenly. Two Chicago-area players were taken by the Cubs, including the team's 24th round selection - right-handed pitcher David Cales - who graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago and just completed his junior season at St. Xavier University. Righthander Anthony Zych, from St. Rita High School, was taken in the 46th round. Go back to Prairie Advocate Home Page |
