Greetings, Carroll County residents! As a visitor to Carroll County I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself as one of Illinois Farm Bureau’s county manager trainees, Kristine Book. For the coming weeks in June, I have the fantastic opportunity to shadow veteran manager Chas Welch for the next month.
Growing up in rural Dixon, I almost consider myself a local in Carroll County. Like many county manager trainees, I grew up on my family’s grain farm. Though I grew up in the tradition of agriculture, I arrived at ag as a career through more unconventional avenues. Unlike other resident rural youth active in the agriculture community, I pursued other interests and graduated from North Central College in Naperville with a B.A. in organizational communications.
Two years ago, I traded the rural landscape of Lee County for a more urban environment in Seoul, South Korea. My enthusiasm for agriculture evolved while teaching English as a second language. I introduced agriculture to my students through photos familiar to farmers; combines, grain carts, and augers spouting kernels of corn. Through my students’ subsequent awe of agriculture, I learned the value of perspective especially in relation to agriculture.
I applied my new perspective of agriculture to many experiences around the state of Illinois. With Farm Bureau, I meet a wide variety of agricultural enthusiasts that range from farmers growing vegetable gardens to farmers practicing aquaculture. Throughout this past year as a trainee, I added many unique skills to my repertoire from leading committee meetings and organizing legislative events to dairy farm tours and social media. With time in both McHenry and Will County, I learned the importance of maintaining working relationships with local legislators. Grundy County introduced me to new innovative agriculture in the classroom programs. I have no doubt that Carroll County offers the same sets of opportunities to continue my growth with Farm Bureau.
Chas sets the bar high for trainees in Carroll County. June in Carroll County brings agriculture in new and different venues. Among other events, June features agriculture in local library programs and through Summer Agriculture Institute for area teachers. June ends with a bang as I have the privilege of meeting all members at Carroll County’s Annual Membership Appreciation Breakfast. Add regular events like board meeting and an active group of Young Leaders and I have quite the month ahead of me!
