It’s time for Old Settlers Days in Lanark. On the heels of the very successful special Sesquicentennial Edition year full of events that drew thousands of people in 2011, the Old Settlers Days committee did not want to see that community spirit fade away. So, they made the theme of this year’s OSD “Keepin’ the Spirit Alive” and have worked very hard to make it as exciting and memorable.
The weekend of June 21 – 24 will be packed with activities, entertainment, food, and fun for the whole family. The committee is thrilled to announce a full carnival with ten mechanical rides for kids through adults. Lanark has not had that many rides in a long time. Examples of the ride can be found at the Great American Show’s website at www.greatamericanshows.org.
With the popularity of the “Taste of Lanark” last year, Old Settlers Days will again add an extra day, Thursday June 21. Everyone is encouraged to bring their best dish to the city park to be judged in appetizers, main dishes, or desserts. And bring enough to share with the spectators, too. Besides the “Taste,” the carnival has graciously agreed to operate that evening from 4:00 pm – 9:00 pm with wristbands available along with regular tickets. Also on Thursday, there will be a farmers market and live music.
Friday June 22 features the annual Syl Mueller Fun Run and the 5K Raging Road Rally. Don’t miss the Antique Show and Craft Fair. You can show off your talents at “Open Mic Night” in the main tent. Besides the rides, the kids will enjoy a Puppet Show & Outdoor Movie Night in the municipal parking lot next to On The Move Fitness. If it rains, these two activities will be moved to the United Methodist Church.
Saturday June 23 highlights include the parade, ATV & garden tractor pulls, and live music with The Funnies Band. There will be lots of competitions going on with sand volleyball, horseshoes, bags, bingo, pie eating contest, kiddie pedal tractor pull, and a quiz bowl. The long awaited release of the Lanark Sesquicentennial Book will be at the Heritage Center from 9 am – 2 pm. If you have pre-ordered books, you can pick them up then. Don’t worry if you didn’t pre-order, cash-and-carry sales will be offered. Be sure to eat a good breakfast, these 432 page books are a little heavy. Another long-awaited event, the groundbreaking for the new Municipal Building and Library will be at noon. And don’t miss the classic rock of The Funnies band. Wristbands for the rides will be available from noon – 4 pm.
Features of Sunday June 24 include a car show and tractor show at the Eastland High School parking lot and a tractor pull behind Eastland Motor Sports. Church Under the Tent begins at 9:30. The Lanark Community Club hosts their annual Pork Chop Dinner starting at 11am. Watch the wet and wild fun of the kids and adults water fights in front of the fire station. Once again, wristbands for the rides will be available from noon – 4pm.
With the carnival rides, games, and food stand taking up more city streets, along with their tractor trailers parked nearby, parking spaces near the park will be limited. So, the Carroll County Senior Center bus will be giving free shuttle rides Saturday and Sunday from 9 am – 4 pm. Maps with designated parking areas and shuttle route will be available at Express Lane.
And that is not all. There are many more activities over the weekend. Visit www.lanarkil.com/OSD or pick up an Old Settlers Days program at Lanark area businesses to see the full lineup and times for the 4 days. Then mark your calendars so you do not miss the fun.
