SAVANNA – Elkay Manufacturing Company hosted its annual Safety Week activities during the week of June 25th-30th. “At Work or at home, Our Aim is No Accidents” was the theme.
The corporate wide event included daily training for employees, some of which were: Electricity, Summer Safety, Ergonomics, and Poisoning. The Company also treated employees to many different incentives including T-shirts, ice cream, and pizza.
The week was closed with a family picnic held at Old Mill Park in Savanna. Families attending were treated to pulled pork and beef sandwiches with delicious sides and cookies. Events for the day included games with prizes and a bags tournament.
Carroll County Sheriff’s Officer Mike Holland and his K-9 partner Illo gave an informational demonstration for a large crowd at the end of the day. Holland went through extensive training before taking on his 4 legged companion. Illo lives with Holland’s family, and reportedly loves going to work.

“If he hears that truck door open, he knows it’s time to go to work,” Holland explained. Illo is a German Shephard who knows commands in German. “Don’t expect to carry on a conversation with me in German, unless you want me to tell you to sit,” Holland joked.
Currently, all care for Illo is donated, with food coming from Pamida and his vet care by the Mount Carroll Vet Clinic. It is evident by watching the pair that they enjoy each other very much.
Following Holland’s presentation, employees and their families were allowed to check out the police vehicle that houses Illo’s comfortable surroundings, and is equipped with special equipment just for him. Donations to help with the K-9’s expenses are always welcome.
