Riding For The Fun Of It

The Steve Feist Group of 26 motorcyclists from Minnesota made Savanna their destination for their annual fun trip. The 2009 "Savanna River Run" was hosted by Lois Hunsaker and the L & M Motel.

Trip organizer Steve Feist said the yearly trip started 9 years ago. The trips are usually around 300 to 500 miles.

"We've done this since 2000 with a small group of friends, and it's grown to 26 of us this year," Steve said. "Most of us are from southeast Minnesota, but we have a few from all over the northland. We've been to Door County, Yellowstone, Sturgis, and this year, Savanna, Illinois. The reason we're here is because of Cindy."

Cindy Tindal and her husband have been to Savanna 3 times, including this trip. "It's a nice area," Cindy said. "It's a great place to ride. We love it here."

Cindy was the designer of the group's T-shirts specially made for the Savanna excursion. "I used a photo from the Savanna web site as inspiration. The riverboat under the bridge full of motorcycles. It's a beautiful scene."

Once fellow rider Rod Hegna printed the T-shirts at the company where he works, the group was ready to hit the road.

In spite of the nearly record low temperatures for July and a few rain showers, fun was in the air. "We've been to Poopy's and the Iron Horse, some of us went to Scales Mound, 2 bars in New Diggins, experienced Gravity Hill, we ate at The Cove on Apple Canyon Lake, and will probably ride to Galena and check out Palisades State Park," Steve added. "And it was good luck that the steam locomotive will be passing through. We'll watch that, too."

Lois also knows how to treat her customers right. One of the couples on the trip were celebrating their 26th wedding anniversary.

"Lois surprised us with an anniversary cake, roses, and champagne," said Kathy Langdon. "That's the kind of thing that has made this trip so special. We'll remember the special treatment, and we'll be back for sure."

"We also got a Snickers bar with a candle in it from our friends," said Kathy's husband Tom. "They've all made this a great weekend. We love to ride, and this is a beautiful area."

FSA County Committee Nomination Deadline Nears

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, July 16, 2009 Scherrie V. Giamanco, State Executive Director for USDA's Farm Service Agency in Illinois reminded farmers, ranchers and other agricultural producers today, that they have until August 3, 2009, to nominate eligible candidates to serve on local FSA county committees.

"County committees are important to Illinois because they assist local farmers and ranchers," said Giamanco. "I especially encourage beginning farmers to get involved by nominating eligible candidates to serve on county committees."

To be eligible to serve on an FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and reside in the local administrative area in which the person is a candidate.

Producers may also nominate themselves, and organizations representing minorities and women may also nominate candidates. To become a nominee, eligible individuals must sign form FSA-669A. The form and other valuable information about FSA county committee elections are available online at: http://www.fsa.usda.gov/FSA/webapp?area=newsroom&subject=landing&topic=cce. Nomination forms for the 2009 election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business on August 3, 2009.

FSA county committee members make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs and other important agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms. Nationwide, there are more than 7,800 farmers and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Committees consist of three to five members who are elected by eligible local producers.

FSA will mail ballots to producers beginning November 6, 2009. The voted ballots are due back to the local county office either via mail or in person by December 7, 2009.

Newly elected committee members and alternates take office January 1, 2010.

Find FSA news releases on the agency's Web site at: http://www.fsa.usda.gov.

ACRE/DCP Program Enrollment Deadline Rapidly Approaching

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS, July 16, 2009 – Scherrie V. Giamanco, State Executive Director (SED) at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) wishes to remind producers of the importance of timely electing and enrolling in the new Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) program or the traditional Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP). It is critical for producers to begin the enrollment process as soon as possible. The deadline to enroll in ACRE or DCP for 2009 is August 14, 2009.

Giamanco explained, "The Average Crop Revenue Election program is an innovative alternative to the traditional farm safety net. With this new program also comes a complex sign up process. It is important producers contact their local office to set up appointments well before the August 14, 2009 deadline."

Late-filed applications for ACRE or DCP will not be accepted. ACRE elections on the

CCC-509ACRE will not be approved until all producers, including owners, on a farm have signed the CCC-509ACRE for election. For crop year 2009, a CCC-509ACRE and CCC-509 not having all requisite signatures of producers on a farm by the election/enrollment deadline of August 14, 2009 will not be considered submitted for the purpose of election/enrollment and will not be acted on or approved. If producers do not elect ACRE, they have the option of completing the CCC-509 contract for enrollment into the DCP program by August 14, 2009. Both ACRE and DCP require all signatures be obtained by the deadline.

Giamanco emphasized, "In all cases, it is the responsibility of the operator and owners of a farm to obtain and submit all necessary signatures on the CCC-509ACRE election form and the CCC-509 for ACRE or DCP program enrollment by the August 14, 2009 deadline".

To elect ACRE for a farm, producers must complete Form CCC-509ACRE, which irrevocably elects ACRE for the farm through crop year 2012. Form CCC-509, the contract to participate in ACRE, must then be completed each year the producer intends to participate and receive benefits. For more information about the ACRE program please visit your local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office or visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov.

Beverage Server Training Available Locally

Carroll County Substance Education Coalition's (CCSEC ) Project Coordinator for the Strategic Prevention Framework-State Incentive Grant (SPF-SIG), Carol Geary, has announced Training for Intervention Procedures (TIPS) certification class will be offered on Wednesday, July 22nd . The class will take place at the Land of OZ in Mt. Carroll from 10AM-4PM, with lunch being provided for those taking the class. The class is offered free to any Carroll County business and their employees that sell alcoholic beverages.

The response from local servers/business's who have been TIPS trained is positive, we have trained 16 servers in Carroll County from 4 business'. 92% of those who attended reported that they learned new information and felt the training increased their confidence in handling difficult situations, and 69% feel the training should be required.

TIPS is a positive approach towards serving alcohol responsibly. TIPS training is used to educate retailers and their servers about responsible alcohol sales, how to protect their business and their staff from lawsuits including legal problems related to underage drinking. TIPS also teaches strategies for handling intoxicated patrons and how to apply strategies identifying potential problems

Servers of alcohol can be instrumental in reducing the incidence of customer intoxication and underage alcohol purchase. The purpose of TIPS is to help people create the kind of environment that promotes safety and responsibility wherever alcohol is sold and consumed.

Geary, along with grant assistant, Freddie Preston, are certified to teach the course. Both Geary and Preston will be able to do the TIPS training, along with the Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSETT) program. Both programs are approved by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC). Businesses who have certified TIPS staff on premises may be able to receive a discount on their dram shop insurance.

Geary said it is the job of businesses to be profitable and it is the TIPS trainer's job to help the business keep as much profit as possible by reducing the possibility of fines for infractions of liquor laws. Geary stated, "By offering this training we are hoping to help local sellers and servers identify potential problems and protect themselves and their businesses from possible fines, loss of liquor licenses and lawsuits."

If you would like to register for the class please contact Geary or Preston at the University of Illinois Extension's Mt. Carroll Office at 815/244-9444 or email Geary at: cgeary@illinois.edu.
