Browns and Noltes Named August Operation Pride Winners

Ron and Mary Ellen Brown, the first of the two Operation Pride awards selected for the month of August.

The Germinators Garden Club has presented its August "Operation Pride" awards to Ron and Mary Ellen Brown, 6428 Route 84 and to Don and Karen Nolte, 2019 Chicago Avenue, both of Savanna, IL.

The nomination for the Browns referred to their home as a "Country Gem" with its perennials and whimsical decorations mixed into all of the flowerbeds. The Browns have lived in their home for 30 years and began the first of their flower gardens with the addition of a brooder house about 15 years ago with a heart-shaped path. The brooder house showcases a delightful collection of chickens and roosters, both inside and out. There is a workshop "pole barn" that houses a fun family area as well as Mary Ellen's many hobby activities and supplies. She was quick to praise her husband for all of his help in making the "ideas" work! The nomination further stated "the Browns replaced the roofing and siding this past winter and obviously take great pride in their home and yard, because it's always exceptionally maintained!"

The nomination for the Noltes was made by Bev Grissinger and listed how they have made improvements every year, including the landscaping and flowerbeds. The Noltes have lived in their home for 35 years and started their first flower garden with a wooden corner picket fence and a purchased flowerbed kit about 15 years ago. The wooden fence was later replaced with vinyl and the Browns have progressed way beyond flowerbed kits, adding to each flowerbed a little at a time. Karen's potting shed has been moved to the back, creating a whimsical "curtained window" addition to all of the other improvements made to their property. When asked what her favorite part of her flower beds was, Karen gave praise to her husband, Don, for his woodworking skills and his many talents for accomplishing all of Karen's "ideas".

Two other nominations for the August "Operation Pride" awards were made by Pam Villalobos for the Emilio and Jess Villalobos, 104 California Street and Frank and JoAnn Hernandez, 1922 Chicago Avenue properties in Savanna. Both nominations were judged and awarded "Honorable Mention" for their well-maintained lawns.

The Browns and Noltes each received the Germinators Garden Club "Operation Pride" award-of-the-month sign to display in their yards as well as a 1-year Family Membership to the garden club. The "Operation Pride" committee members judging the August entries were Judy Redding of Mt. Carroll, Susan Sites, and Linda Frerichs of Savanna.
