After a decade of debate by committee members of the NFHS (National Federation of High School Associations), the pitching distance for high
school varsity softball pitchers will increase from the current 40 feet to 43 feet, which is the standard distance for all NCAA and professional pitchers. Florida
has been testing the new distance for the past four years and the state of Oregon for the past year. Coaches within these two states were overwhelmingly in
favor of the change. The NFHS made the rules revision at its annual meeting in early June in Indianapolis. The IHSA Board of Directors approved the
recommendation at their meeting August 10.
The change will affect nearly 15,000 school varsity teams in those states that are members of the NFHS. Junior varsity and younger teams have
the option of staying at the 40-foot distance. IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman said, "I believe this is the best move for the student-athletes and
high school softball in Illinois.
This change came as no surprise and we knew it was only a matter of time. It will increase offense and get the defense more involved in the game,
but more importantly it has the potential to improve safety for the pitchers. When you consider the safety factor, there really wasn't a logical reason to wait
to move the pitching distance.
