Farm Bureau at a glance

Go To The Carroll County Farm Bureau

By STEPHANIE FOLTZ, Summer Intern

Where has the summer gone? Just a few short months ago I was introducing myself to all of you as the new Carroll County Farm Bureau Intern. Now today I am telling you how much fun this summer has been and goodbye for now. It’s hard to believe.

It’s difficult to pick out my favorite activity or moment from my time here because there have been so many. There have also been some crazy times around here. Chas told me before I was offered the internship that I may need to be flexible because of the building remodel. Well after moving about four different times from one side of the building to the other, I’m glad Chas gave me fair warning.

I spent a large part of my time at the Farm Bureau this summer preparing for the 2nd Annual Children’s Farm that took place during the Carroll County Fair. It was a great project because I worked for three months getting supplies, animals, and donations rounded up for it all to come together in August. We had over 500 kids visit the farm bringing with them parents and grandparents making the total attendance around 1,700. It was nice to see everyone’s hard work come together making the Children’s Farm a success again this year.

This summer I was given the chance to work with some of the Farm Bureau committees. I worked with the Woman’s Committee the most. They received a grant through the Midwest Dairy Association that helped support the 3-A-Day Dairy booth and milk mustache contest held at the fair. We had the kids put on their best milk mustache and snapped their picture. The pictures were then posted at the 3-A-Day booth and were voted on throughout the week. We had over 70 pictures posted and around 500 fair goers voted for their favorite.

Interviewing two Carroll County Farm Bureau members with some of the longest memberships was also a highlight for me. I sincerely enjoyed sitting down with Jacob Getz and Loyal Siedenburg. Their stories of the way things were reminded me to not take anything for granted.

For several years I showed cattle at the Carroll County Fair and I used to think I was busy with the cattle. However, now that I’ve worked with the Farm Bureau during fair week, I am reconsidering what I thought busy was. Even though my head was spinning through some of it I wouldn’t change a thing. The 2nd Annual Tractor Drive required last minutes adjustments by everyone due to the storm the night before. Once I saw the 51 antique tractors on those country roads I forgot all about the hectic day. I was very thankful that I got to be a part of the drive and enjoyed meeting all of the participants.

I want to thank Chas and the Farm Bureau Board of Directors for giving me this opportunity to expand my horizons along with making new relationships in and out of the office. Also a big thank you to Jessica and everyone at COUNTRY Financial for allowing me to invade their office space at one time or another during my moves. Everyone I’ve come in contact with through the internship this summer has been nothing but nice and I couldn’t have asked for a better work environment. Once again thank you to everyone who has helped me this summer and I’ll be seeing ya!
