Another Carroll County Fair is in the books. The week fared pretty well. This year the Young Leaders did the Ag Olympics in front of the grandstand. If you didn’t see it, it was quite the hit. We had more adult teams than ever. I would like to thank our sponsors for the event: Clark Carroll Insurance, Milledgeville State Bank, 1st Farm Credit Services, Vita Plus-Lanark Ag Center, Carroll Service Company, and 1st Class Insurance. The Young Leaders appreciate your support. We hope to have more teams next year.
The Children’s Farm at the fair continues to be a hit. A thank you goes out to the 4-H members and their parents who help work the farm and also who line up the animals for it. This year we did see a decrease in the number of people who visited our farm, but we did still have a great turnout.
Also in the books is the Illinois State Fair. Our quiz bowl team of Justin Rahn, Mitchell Rahn, Mike Urish and Ed Livengood made it to the second round before losing at the last minute. This is the second time we have taken a team down to quiz bowl and I have to say it is quite entertaining to watch.
Before our team got to compete, the announcement of the Illinois Farm Bureau Young Leaders Achievement Award was made. As I mentioned before, Ed and Kali Livengood were one of two finalists for the award. I think all of us who were there cheering for them, caught our breath when we heard the runner up announced. Ed and Kali won! As the winner for Illinois, they will now compete at the American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Meeting in January in San Antonio for the national title. We are very proud of their accomplishment and wish them the best of luck in January. Last January, they sent in the application and were selected as one of the two finalists. Then they took a day to go to Bloomington for a review of the application. In July, they had an interview process they had to go through. All of those steps lead up to their winning.
Our 4C’s group just met to finalize their program plans for the 2013-2014 year. What are the 4C’s? They are a group of men and women over the age of 65 who meet on a monthly basis for social events and programs. This year they have lined up a tour of Rack & Wing in Lanark, a presentation by the Carroll County Senior Center, and a number of other tours. If you would like more information on the group, please contact our office. They meet the first Friday night of each month. Singles and couples are both welcome.
If you have not sent in your 2013-2014 Farm Bureau membership dues, they are due August 31. While the 31st does fall on a Saturday, and the next business day is Tuesday, September 3rd due to the Labor Day Holiday, you can get them to us Tuesday the 3rd as our office will be closed on Monday, September 2nd.
September 2nd, will be the day of the last Young Leaders pedal pull of the year. We will be at Shannon for their Annual Labor Day celebration. The pull will be held in the fire station at 1 p.m.
