Sunday, July 18 the Village of Shannon held a community birthday party commemorating Shannon’s 150th birthday. On that sultry Sunday, Steve Sheffy entertained a crowd of 250 residents and friends of the Village of Shannon. Twenty-two people donated cakes to create an amazing smorgasbord of cakes. Free cake and ice cream was served and the Shannon Chamber of Commerce provided grilled brats and hamburgers for purchase. Balloons were purchased for $1 with cards attached and a group lunch took place. Most of the balloons made it over the trees and out of sight with the help of the wind.
A proclamation of residency and friendship was signed. Mary LaShelle Mantle was the first to sign as her great, great uncle Jacob S. LaShelle signed the papers of incorporation for Shannon in 1866. State Representative Jim Sacia stopped by to offer his support for the Village and he signed the document as well. There were games for the children provided by the Shannon Baptist Church, plenty of lemonade and ice water and a lot of visiting with friends and neighbors. The Proclamation Document will be available for signing during the Homecoming celebration.
Shannon Homecoming
The Homecoming committee met July 19. There was a long discussion over the concerns of safety along the parade route. Several of the drivers of parade vehicles have voiced a concern over the issue of children darting out between parked cars to get candy. They also have a difficult time executing corners where cars are parked. It was decided by the committee to prohibit parking along the parade route this year. The decision came down to inconvenienced people or an injured child. Once put in that light it was opted to go with the inconvenienced people. For anyone who feels inconvenienced by this change, I would suggest they first decide which child they could lose before calling me. Residents of Shannon are being asked to put their cars in driveways or garages so we can have room for visitors to park during the parade. Signs stating – No Parking on Parade Route 8-12 Monday will be put up as reminders. Tickets will be issued. Parking on the grass west of EMS will be available if the ground is not wet.
Farmers Market in Shannon is on Fridays from 3-5 on Market Street. Buy local and fresh.
