Despite a slow and scoreless first quarter, the West Carroll Thunder and AFC Raiders battled it out Friday night in Savanna with the Thunder taking the eight-point 34-26 victory. The second and third quarters were a different story as both teams cracked the scoreboard. West Carroll put fourteen points on the board with Tyler Kingery scoring on runs of six and four yards and the Raiders reaching pay dirt on an eighty-eight yard kickoff return by Nathan Fahs.

Both teams found the end zone twice in the third quarter with the Thunder’s Tyler Kingery scoring on a thirty-one yard run and Marcus Klein finding the end zone from fifty yards out. A Raider fumble recovery in the end zone and a four-yard run by Fahs accounted for AFC’s points.

The fourth quarter saw Klein find pay dirt again on a twenty-yard scamper and the Raider’s Byron Howlett countered with a one yard run. Klein was the game’s leading rusher, carrying the football twenty times for one hundred ninety-seven yards and two scores. QB Nick Hughes completed five of nine passes for seventy-six yards. Fahs led the Raider’s ground game, carrying the ball sixteen times for one hundred thirty-one yards and a score. West Carroll travels to Pecatonica on Friday night to face the Indians.

EPC Rolls Over Pecatonica

The Wildcats used a potent offense and a stifling defense to shut out the Pecatonica Indians 22-0 Friday evening in Pec. After getting off to a slow start the defense sparked the ‘Catz as defensive back Pat Harrington picked off a Quinn Nichol pass to set up a ninety-nine yard drive capped off with a twenty-six yard scoring strike from QB Drake Walker to Harrington.

On Pecatonica’s first pass play of the next drive, EPC’s Brady Hazelbower picked off Nichol for the second time and returned it thirty-nine yards for the score to put EPC up 14-0 at the halftime intermission.

Walker again found Harrington for a fifty-four yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Harrington again picked off a Nichol pass attempt on Pec’s next drive to seal the victory for the Wildcats.

Mikki Stichter led the EPC ground attack, carrying the football seventeen times for eighty-four yards. Walker completed five of thirteen pass attempts for one hundred fifteen yards and two scores. Harrington caught two passes for seventy-one yards. EPC hosts the Polo Marcos on Friday night in Pearl City.

WCMS Volleyball Starts Season

By Kari Baisden, Coach

The West Carroll volleyball season has begun. Numbers in the middle school continue to be high. The middle school teams began practice on August 8 with their season opener scheduled against Riverdale on August 22. They will have matches against Chadwick, Polo, Fulton Unity, Galena, Challand Middle School (Sterling), Pearl City, Riverbend (Fulton Jr. High), Stillman Valley, Lena, and River Ridge. The teams will also compete in three tournaments this year. It will be a fast and furious season ending on October 6 with games played at River Ridge.

WCMS 7th Grade VB Defeats Riverdale & Chadwick

The West Carroll Black and Green teams both defeated Riverdale in their match on August 22. Scores in the four game match were 21-14, 21-11, 21-19, and 21-8. Top servers in the games were Taylor Sipe, Emily Suiter, Olivia Burton, Makenzie Klein, and Shelby Skiles. Each team played two games in the match which was played at Riverdale. The West Carroll Black team also defeated Chadwick at home on August 23. Scores in the best of three match were 25-19,10-25, and 25-19. Top servers were Taylor Sipe, Olivia Brinkmeier, Emily Suiter, and Hayley Guilinger. Despite getting behind in game 2, the players stayed focused and came back to win the match in the third game.

WCMS Volleyball Keeps Rolling

The 7th grade volleyball teams at West Carroll continued their winning streak with two matches against Polo on August 25. The Green team played first winning two games (25-12, 25-8) to take the match. Leading servers on the team were Alissa Miner, Olivia Burton, Josi Anderson and Shelby Skiles. The Black team also played a match against Polo which they won in two games (25-17, 25-14). Leading servers in that match were Hayley Guilinger, Raelyn Rekenthaler, Olivia Brinkmeier, and Elise Walls. Both teams showed good movement on the court to continue their undefeated seasons. They will be challenged in the coming weeks with matches against Chadwick, Fulton Unity, and Galena. The 7th grade tournament team will also travel to Oregon on September 10 to compete in the Oregon tournament, which will be played at the Blackhawk Sports Complex.

WCMS 8th Volleyball Starts 2011 Season

The 8th grade Thunder volleyball girls traveled to Riverdale on the 23rd of August and split the four games played, 6-21,10-21,21-19 and 21-19. Alex Coats and Allison Brunner made the leading serving scores.

The girls played at home against Chadwick on the 24th and lost the match in two games, 18-25 and 13-25. All 12 girls on the team evened out the serving scores.

On Thursday the 26th the 8th graders traveled to Polo. They won both matches in three games each: 25-21, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-21, 25-19 and 7-15. This year, the squad is trying to play a 6-2 offense and is finally feeling comfortable with it. The setters used in this type of offense this year are Kacee French, Alex Coats and Kaylee Plattenburger. The Thunder team is also using a libero this year. Breanna Kampmeier plays this position.

WCMS 7th Grade Suffers Loss

The 7th grade “Green” team from West Carroll lost to Chadwick in match play on Tuesday, August 30. Scores in the match were 14-25 and 24-26. “Although we had good serving from Olivia Burton and Josi Anderson in game two, we just couldn’t get past the Streaks,” commented Coach Kari Baisden. “We need to be more consistent in our passing and more confident when we are in serve receive.” The Green team will have a chance to do better on September 8 when they will face the Streaks again at WCMS. “Hopefully, we will have a better night all the way around when we face Chadwick again,” said Coach Baisden.
