Next week is National Farm Safety and Health Week. This week is generally timed to be celebrated right before harvest season. This year however
it seems harvest will be a little delayed. Once harvest season does arrive, one of the most important thing drivers can do is slow down. Keep your speed
at or below the posted limits. Watch out for farm machinery when driving in the country. Combines, tractors and the implements they're pulling are
usually traveling less than 25 miles per hour.
Keep an eye out for the red and orange fluorescent "slow moving vehicle" (SMV) emblem and adjust your speed accordingly. If you need to pass
farm equipment on the highway, make sure the driver knows you are there. Many farm equipment operators will pull over if there is a safe area to do so.
However, that's not always possible, especially if the edge of the roadway is steep or without a shoulder.
If you're a farmer, make sure your implements are as visible as possible. State laws regarding machinery lighting and marking require at minimum
a SMV emblem that is visible to motorist to the rear of the equipment at all times. If moving at night, Illinois law requires equipment to have two red
taillights mounted as far right and left as practical, two white headlights visible for at least 1,000 feet to the front, and at least one flashing amber light mounted
as high as practical. For enhanced visibility, mount an amber flashing light on both the far right and left of tractors and implements make sure the lights
are visible from the front and rear. When operating farm equipment on the roadway, all lights and flashing lights should be on during both day and night
for enhanced visibility.
We hope everyone has a safe fall harvest season. The Women's Committee is again distributing candy safety pails throughout the county at various
ag businesses to remind our farmers to stay safe and alert.
Fall candle scents are now here! It is quite cold (I know it is only 53 out, but to me that is cold!) and the thought of a hot apple cider candle
burning sounds very warming. In fact the day the candles came in, there was too much going on in the office to unpack all 34 boxes and put them away. So we
just pushed them aside till the next day, however I couldn't take it and had to open one of the boxes that had a Starlight Mint in it. One sniff is all I needed
to get through the day. I have to say that is my favorite smell other than the Holiday Garland.
We are beginning to plan our fall and winter programs. If you have any ideas or thoughts on programs that would be beneficial to you and
other members, please give us a call. I have heard a few ideas, but would love to hear more. By the way, you can mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 25.
This is that day in which we will hold our annual Membership Appreciation Breakfast and have an open house to showcase our remodeling project.
Our County Annual meeting will be held that day as well. More details will be out on these events as we grow closer to the day.
