    Missiles Soar Past Durand

    MILLEDGEVILLE ­ Jake Workman reached the endzone four times Friday night as host Milledgeville turned back Durand in convincing fashion, winning 48-6.

    As a team, Milledgeville amassed 268 yards rushing via 46 carries. The Missiles ate up yardage throughout the game. Milledgeville was eight-for-nine through the air for 176 yards.

    Missile quarterback Kirk Engelkens completed four touchdown passes. Workman worked his way around the field during the game, hauling in a 34-yard pass from Engelkens as he got the scoring started. Workman had another touchdown reception when he hauled in a 26-yard pass. He also scored on runs of one yard and 60 yards.

    Four different players scored touchdowns for the Missiles. In addition, Engelkens completed a pair of two-point conversion passes and rushed for another.

    Durand was limited on the offensive side. The Bulldogs came up empty on three pass attempts. On the ground, Durand rushed for 72 yards on 38 attempts. Durand fumbled three times, losing possession on one of the dropped balls.

    The Bulldogs got onto the scoreboard via a two-yard touchdown run. The Missile defensive unit wasn't willing to give much up in the way of yardage. Milledgeville jumped out in front in the early stages of the Northwest Illinois high school football game and never looked back.

    Polo Pounds West Carroll

    POLO ­ Matt Scholl and Drew Cheatham paved the way Friday night as Polo blanked West Carroll 32-0. Scholl rushed 10 times for a game-high 121 yards and three touchdowns as the Marcos prevailed. Cheatham finished behind Scholl in the West Carroll rushing column, carrying 10 times for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Wiggins (366 yards) and Matt VanOosten (23 yards) also rushed for positive yardage for the Marcos. Host Polo rushed for 248 yards on 40 attempts.

    The Marcos wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, jumping out in front early on. Scholl scored on a pair of first quarter runs as Polo carried a 13-0 lead out of the opening period. The Marcos scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a commanding 26-0 halftime advantage.

    Through the air, School completed his lone pass attempt for 15 yards. Polo was committed to staying on the ground in its latest gridiron matchup. Connor Lincoln hauled in Polo's lone pass for 15 yards.

    West Carroll was limited offensively, rushing for 130 yards on 34 attempts. The Thunder picked up 104 yards through the air. West Carroll fumbled once, losing possession of the football on the miscue.

    Polo won despite committing five fumbles. The Marcos lost one of the fumbles.

    Ethan Baisden led West Carroll. The Thunder quarterback completed 12-of-28 passes for 104 yards with one interception. Adam Ferguson was the leading receiver for West Carroll, hauling in four catches for 50 yards. Justin Ferguson and John Allen combined for 42 yards on five receptions for the Thunder. Allen was West Carroll's leading rusher, finishing with 47 yards via seven carries. David Walked rushed for 34 yards on eight carries for West Carroll. Baisden picked up 29 yards via nine carries for the Thunder.

    Help The Longspurs

    The Carroll County Pheasants Forever Long-Spurs Scholastic Trap Shooting team is holding a fundraiser Saturday, September 27, 2008. They are hosting a BBQ and Car Wash from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Carroll County Automotive, 909 S. Clay St. Mt. Carroll, Il. 61053.

    Orangeville Defends Pearl City Invitational Title

    PEARL CITY ­ Orangeville still reigns as the Pearl City Invitational champion. The Broncos won the 2008 tournament title over the weekend, defeating host Pearl City 2-0 (25-11, 25-23) in the championship match of the high school volleyball event.

    Junior Nici DeVries finished with seven kills and three aces in the championship match. Senior Sam DeVries delivered five kills of her own.

    Orangeville rolled in the first game. The Broncos found more resistance in the second set.

    Nicole Lawler landed three kills and once ace for Pearl City the championship match. In the second set, Orangeville found itself in a 23-23 deadlock before ultimately prevailing. Pearl City committed two errors to give Orangeville the win.

    Orangeville is a tournament-tested team. The Broncos finished second in the Oregon tournament earlier in the month.

    Pearl City defeated East Dubuque twice to get to the championship match. Hillary Kuhlemeier and Cassie Aurand were other leading contributors for Pearl City. Lawler was stellar in a tournament match versus Galena, landing 12 kills.

    E/PC Defeats Host Warren/River Ridge

    WARREN ­ Eastland/Pearl City remained unbeaten in the conference Friday night, defeating Warren/River Ridge 37-15 in a Northwest Illinois high school football matchup. The Wildcats turned it up a notch offensively in the conference contest while holding Warren/River Ridge to two touchdowns on the defensive side.

    Eastland/Pearl City entered the game having been outscored 97-62 in three previous outings. With the loss, Warren/River Ridge remained winless on the season. Warren/River Ridge had given up 93 points in three previous outings prior to the game versus Eastland/Pearl City. The Warriors have struggled defensively throughout the season.

    Eastland/Pearl City defeated Warren/River Ridge 39-13 when the two teams met in 2007.

    The Wildcats improved to 2-2 overall after defeating Warren/River Ridge, who dropped to 0-4.

    Eastland/Pearl City will face Dakota this Friday night (Sept. 26).

    Eastland Claims Byron Tournament Title

    BYRON ­ The Eastland High School volleyball team is up to its old familiar championship-winning ways. Eastland prevailed in the recent Byron tournament. The Cougars are a team expected to contend for the NUIC West conference championship.

    During the Byron tournament, Eastland faced two of the top teams in the NUIC East ­ Dakota and Aquin. The Cougars won the tournament championship in stout fashion.

    Eastland defeated defending champion Dakota in the first-place championship qualifying match of the Byron tournament. The Cougars, under the guidance of head coach Kristy Pierce, defeated Dakota. Eastland won the first game 25-16. Then, Dakota battled back to win Game 2 25-20. A host of Eastland players stepped up against the defending tournament champion.

    Outside hitter Megan Bunyer proved to be the difference-maker for tradition-rich Eastland. The Cougars went on to prevail in a shortened third game.

    Eastland is due to meet Dakota in a regular-season matchup Oct. 15.

    The Cougars defeated Aquin in the championship match of the Byron tournament.

    Eastland 6th graders take Polo Jamboree

    The Eastland 6th grade football team won the Polo Jamboree with a perfect 4-0 record including setting a record with twenty eight points in a twenty minute game. Devon Heeren was named MVP of the tourney. Along with Eastland, Chadwick-Milledgeville, West Carroll, Polo and AFC competed.
