MEREDOCIA. PART II - THE WHITESIDE COUNTY HISTORY, 1877, introduced its record concerning its township’s past by telling about the Meredocia Swamp. That’s how important it was. Its location was described according to the rivers and creek that made up its 12,000 acres and how in flood or low waters affected the “Marsh of Willows” as the word translated. The geology of the frontier as yet unsettled or civilized was a valuable item to know and in this case the Mississippi, Rock Rivers and Meredocia Creek added to the vitality of the landscape.

Shannon Couple Celebrates 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mr. & Mrs. Alfred James Wirtjes are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. “Jim” and the former Ardith Stoner were united in marriage on September 27, 1953 at The Evangelical United Brethren Church (now Bethel United Methodist Church) in Shannon, IL. The Reverend T. R. Moritz officiated the ceremony. Jim and Ardith have lived, farmed, and worked in the Shannon and Freeport area their entire lives; living first near Shannon, then for the past 36 years at their present home in rural Freeport.

The couple has one daughter , Tammy Glendenning, who resides with her husband Terry in rural Davis Junction, IL. They are also blessed with 5 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Their eldest granddaughter, Talitha and husband Philip Gardner, live in Kankakee with their four children - Eian, Natalie, Caleb & James. They have two grandsons; Lucas Glendenning and his wife Alicia reside at Lake Carroll with their four children - Kyla, Micah, Lianah, & Alayna, while Lance Glendenning and wife Abby, along with their four children Jared, Elijah, Ava & Ellen make their home near Churdan, Iowa. Two of their granddaughters live near Davis Junction; Telah Garwacki, with her husband Rob and son Scott, and Abigail Glendenning who resides with her parents. We are excited to celebrate their sixty years of dedication to each other, to their family, community, and country.

Rogers-Helfrich Engaged

John and Diane Rogers wish to announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Lori, to Daniel Helfrich of Litchfield, IL. Lori and Dan will be married on October 26th at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Freeport, IL. Lori graduated from Eastland High School in Lanark in 2011, Marquette University and Catholic Theological Union with a Master in Divinity. Dan graduated from Litchfield High School, served our country in the U.S. Navy and was in the Franciscan Order for over four years. Dan is the son of Gary and Bev Helfrich from Litchfield, IL.
